Hey there! I just saw this thread for the first time and I figured I might as well post, since I'm just starting to get into the BJD community.

I'm saving up for my first doll right now! I'm planning to order a Minifee Mika boy from Fairyland as soon as I can gather the funds. I'm about 75% of the way there at the moment! I'm super excited because I've had my eye on this doll for the longest time and finally decided to start saving up back in January. I love the default faceup, so I'm planning to order him with that. My biggest dilemma right now is deciding whether I want him on the A-line body or the M-line body. I prefer the aesthetic of the M-line, but the A-line's articulation is better. I'm into doll photography (I've been doing it for a while with my fashion dolls - I also collect Monster High and Pullips and such), so better articulation is a plus. Decisions, decisions. Oh well.

Also, does anyone have experience ordering through Denver Doll Emporium instead of directly from the company? What are the advantages of ordering this way? I'm wondering whether I should order through DDE or Fairyland.

I'm not sure yet. I would really love to create a custom doll, but I feel like I'm too new to the BJD community to make one. I'm currently stuck between deciding on whether to buy the Dollfie Dream Sister (DDS), Mayu, or to make my own DDS. I do know for a fact, though, that my Dollfie will be a DDS.

I would really prefer for my doll to be made of resin too, but I'm just far too in love with the Dollfie Dreams to resist the vinyl.

Ooh, that's a tough choice. Mayu is super pretty! If you want to create a custom but don't have the skills to do a faceup, you could always hire someone whose work you like to do it for you (provided you have the funds). I guess it might be kind of intimidating to send your doll head off to somebody else for a while, though (I know that's part of the reason I'm planning to keep the default faceup on my boy, heh). In the end though, it's 100% your choice. You could always buy one of them first and then save up and buy the other! :3

But yeah, I can either build the doll myself or purchase the one that's already built and ready to be changed.

There was only one term that I didn't understand, which is "faceup"
So, what's a faceup?

I would also like to know which kind of face is better... One with closed eyeholes or open eyeholes? I've been seeing these on the Volks site a lot, but no matter how much research I do, I can't find much on which is better. I've noticed that most people use open eyeholes...

Hey, sorry for the late response!

A faceup is the painting on the head of a doll (lip color, blushing on the cheek, eyelines, eyebrows etc). Most of the time companies provide these for an extra fee, though these are usually also 'default', which means they have one style of faceup for a specific mold. Sometimes they provide 'custom' faceups as well, but those are also more expensive than the default faceups are.

As for the eyes, I have no experience with the 'closed' eye versions of volks heads, so I can't really give any advice on that. But considering that you can't put in acryllic or glass eyes with closed eyes, I will guess it would work the same as with 'closed eyed' obitsu dolls (They are plastic/vinyl dolls like the DollfieDreams but on a much smaller scale, also very cute!). With those, you can use decal eyes, wich are basically rub-on stickers. The upside to these would be not having to fuss with the eyes once they are on. What I personally would find a downside is that decals tend to damage somewhat easily, and you can't move the eyes into a different direction.

If you choose the open eyed version, you can choose eyes from (as far as I know) 3 kinds of material; Silicone (very realistic, but hard to keep clean because of their rubbery structure), Acryllic (cheap, easy to obtain, lot's of colors available. Made of a hard plastic, also available in with an anime style look), and Glass (Sturdy, doesn't break easily, but a little more expensive in general than acryllics, don't really come with an anime style look unless you are willing to pay for custom eyes)

I'm still trying to think of names for him... I've been thinking of him as Mika (his sculpt name) for so long that I think it might end up sticking, but I'm also considering Oliver as a potential candidate. I ordered his wig and clothes the other day (so tiny!); hopefully those will arrive before he does. I don't know much about his character yet except that he's probably going to be a college art student.

Is she limited then? I can't seem to find that she is so you should be fine and able to take your time saving up :3
