My female betta was swimming sideways and leaning along the side of her tank today; she's never done this before. Is this normal betta behavior or should I be concerned? I don't want to overreact, but it seemed very unusual and this is my first betta so I don't know much about them. I thought that she was asleep so I placed a finger on the tank and she started moving, but her swimming seemed really odd and I had to put food in her tank several times before she noticed it and ate.

I replaced her water last week and transferred her into a larger tank (basically I had her at college, brought her home over Christmas break because I had to come home every weekend due to a family emergency and didn't want to leave her in my roommate's care, and transferred her from her original tank to a smaller tank until I could bring the large one home from my dorm) but it has been an entire week so I don't think that it could be any sort of stress.

Thanks, flyteck!

I'm updating the member list on the front page so if anyone has any changes to their previous form (new tanks, more/less fish, etc.) please feel free to post and let me know c: You can re-fill out the original form and just add a little note so I know it's an update.

Also, if anyone has any good fish websites/care sheets/etc. PM me the link(s)! I'm looking for more to add to the fish info centre post.

Tanks don't cycle on their own. You would need to know the parameters to know if it's cycled.

Just elaborating on PeachFuzz's statement. Tanks, even after 2 years, may not be cycled. While from what I've heard (the fish store I go to has some very knowledgeable experts on fish), if your fish's been living in it for 2 years, it's likely the tank has cycled, or at the very least balanced itself out somewhat. However, even small changes in water perimeters or factors can bump a cycled tank into recycling or a mini cycle, and this can mess with the whole of the tank.

I would by a test kit as soon as you can, it can often lead to the answers to many fish diseases and deaths.

Otherwise I'd agree with Hime as a care treatment. Changing the water twice a week should help. Personally, I've changed the tank every other day about 25%. Cleared my betta's fin rot right up! If that doesn't work, I know Fungus Clear tablets have worked well for me... or, rather, my brother, whose betta is quickly recovering (despite desperately needing a larger tank.)

Alright I'll try to get a test kit ASAP.

While I've been looking for good homes or another tank for my goldfish I've moved some to my 10 gallon (as sadly our water was too hard for the tetras and they passed). It's not ideal, but since I'd rather not sell them, and the water perimeters have been fine, I think they'll be able to wait a couple weeks 'til I can get a larger tank (or a couple smallish tanks).
So currently I have:
-- 7 goldfish in a 29 gallon bowfront tank
-- 1 betta in a 2.5 gallon
-- 3 goldfish in a 10 gallon

Also, I know I should just sell or give them away, but I've become so attached to the little buggers.

What kind of goldfish and how big are they currently? If they're in there for more than a few weeks they're going to have long term health problems, even if they're moved after that. If you are attached to them and want them to be healthy you would be better giving at least some of them away.

I know. And pardon me for being brash, but I'm sick and tired of hearing that, because I already know it's not healthy. They're all fancy goldfish of different species, and I have been looking for tanks 20 gallons and up for them, since I have room. All of them are 1 or 2 inches at most. If I'd bought the tank from the beginning I would've only put two or three goldfish in the 29 gallon. However, I bought it from someone I knew who did not know what they're doing, and the tank was filthy and grimy and the fish were NOT being properly cared for. No, they still aren't being properly cared for now, no, but they are doing well and I am working on getting them new homes.

And I do understand that it's better to get some out of there immediately. However, the issue around here is that there are lots of people wanting fish but very few people who would take good care of them. I can't ship them, and while I'm more than happy to give them out for free, I can't in good consciousness give them to some beginner who may as well keep them in a 1 gallon bowl. I'm doing my best with what I have and I've owned goldfish since I can remember. I know how to take care of them and I'm NOT happy with keeping them in their current tank. However currently it's the only good option I have to ensure their safety.

Also, sorry for being touchy on this subject. I just hate being told what I already know, and I do feel guilty, yes.
