⋘ Personality ⋙
≫ Kaede is quiet and very reserved, a girl that keeps to herself. She is observant and chooses more to watch and learn about who she is dealing or interacting with than to ask questions to learn. Asking usually leads to lying so it is best in her opinion to learn for herself first and then look for the weak points that they lie about. Her past has trained her not to show her emotions to those around her that she does not trust and those that gave gained her trust are few and far between. To most, she is intimidating and seemingly abrasive her expression never seems to change from it's serious nature and this is enough to ward them off from trying to approach her. She has grown to expect and appreciate this though as it keeps people not worth trusting away. This, however, is not how she truly feels about the world; this facade is exactly that, a facade.
Underneath it hides her broken heart, her wounded and scarred soul that has endured much pain and sorrow. To protect herself from further harm, she created the barrier of ice that surrounds her completely, hiding what is broken behind something that is fierce and unmoving. True, what is hidden is more warm and gentle with a loyalty that is unending. She would die for anyone that she decides to love - friend, family, or life partner - and defend them with a vengeance that matches the strength of a DragonWolf. She is honorable and chivalrous and has a kind heart to all creatures big and small, but even this loyalty - as strong as it is - is fragile. Betray her even once and she'll lock you out of her heart and trust forever.
So even though she is rough and cold on the outside, her hidden heart is what truly makes up the girl hiding from her past. It is only scarred and fragile and Kaede fears to let anyone else see just how broken she truly is. She fears they may do more harm than good...
⋘ History ⋙
≫ Kaede is the daughter of an aristocrat family, born into the wealthy military estate of the Akatsuki family. They were a well known and revered family thanks to Kaede's father's military successes and victories. So honored was he that he was continuously asked to attend and advise many military conferences even after he'd retired, which was soon after Kaede was born. Why retire so early? Because she was born with blonde hair and light blue eyes rather than black hair and amber eyes, giving her parents the impression that she would be sickly and would not live long. Fearing she would quickly catch a sickness and wanting to help her live as long as possible, her father immediately began to arrange private tutors and staff members for her in order to keep her safe from the outside world. She wasn't allowed outside the estate walls alone and should someone come to visit the estate for a meeting with the family, she was kept behind a curtain or screen and was never allowed to have physical contact with anyone save her family members. No children came over to play with her and that gap of loneliness was filled with pets instead. This kind of quarantine of hers began to make her a popular topic amid the other aristocrat families; the unseen face of Lady Kaede of the Akatsuki family. What surprised everyone more than anything about her, however, was that she seemed to be healthier than most children her age and her mindset more advanced. This was especially true when she first showed signs of fire bending at age four.
As she grew older, the precautions became a kind of protection from people rather than sickness; she was the only daughter of a very popular family after all. She excelled in her studies and her skills in fire bending was quick to be controlled. Seeing her superior ability to learn, her father even began to secretly teach her the ways of war and battle, knowing her intellect could one day be very useful to the four nations future. One day, when she was twelve years of age, her father received word that a great battle had erupted and that he was requested on the battlefield urgently and so of course, he had to go, vowing to protect his nation and his family that resided in it. Though the battle was won, he did not return from battle as he received fatal wounds and died on the trip home. Kaede was heartbroken by this and she was never the same after this having loved her father more than anyone else. The young Akatsuki girl that had once been was no more as a coldness took over her heart. She hardly ever spoke to anyone, even her mother, and she always had a stern look upon her face. She pulled away from the people around her and even her mother - who was already just as heartbroken as Kaede was. And then suddenly, her mother grew ill and passed away two years later, leaving the entire Akatsuki family estate to her fourteen-year-old daughter. Immediately, young aristocrat bachelors jumped at the chance to try and persuade Kaede to accept their hand in marriage. One in particular would not take no for an answer.
He visited the estate at least once a day, each time trying to get close enough to the curtain where he could see her, but she was always one step ahead, evading him each time. Finally, having had enough, Kaede sent away all of her pursuers, dismissed her servants and staff, and locked the doors of the mansion before anyone could argue; she'd heard the young man call over the wall that he would return that next morning to retrieve her whether she liked it or not. That night, she sat in the shadows in the garden, looking up at the stars with tears in her eyes, wishing to join her parents once more when suddenly a black figure appeared in the garden and stepped over to her. This figure turned out to be a large, wolf-like creature with a pair of feathery wings and two black curled horns on his head, its shining golden eyes seeming to mirror Kaede's own soul. It was Ryuu that she had come to meet that night and learned his story as he learned hers. They were the same, both left alone in this world with hundreds against them, trying to use or destroy them and so from that night own, they vowed to never leave each other's side and protect each other always, becoming closer than any animal and human had ever been. The next day when the young man and his retainers had come to collect Kaede to take her as his bride, his was shocked to find the entire Akatsuki estate in ashes. She didn't want to be pursued by anyone anymore and so before she and Ryuu left, they burned her home to the ground, a symbol of starting over and forgetting the old. To this day, no one knows the fate of Kaede Akatsuki and because no one knew what she looked like save for her servants, no one will ever know unless she tells them. For the past six years, she and Ryuu have been traveling across the world together.
Now they have come to Republic City, investigating rumors of coming war...
