Aw how cute, I don't remeber who told me this but the bird need a lot attention which i know but If I go to school And my mom doesn't feel or want to hold the bird I would want get him a friend so they keep eachother happy? And I never heard a bird growl cx, I have held a baby chick, well it wasn't really a baby i believe it was 5 week old, until it want it to be with the others chick and try to jump out of my hand, I am glad I am getting over my little fear of a lot of animals claw, I alway wonder how it felt when I hold a animal and their claw or nail touch me , I stay calm and it doesn't hurt me much it funny because when someone just scratch me I don't stay calm i mostly yell, but when te animals nail/claws on me It sometmes hurt but I don't yell or say a word about it, I am getting used to bunny nails and little animals nail, and cockatiel of course though I wouldn't really hold a cockatoo because of it claw and it big, not ready for that, though i have hold wild animals like last times Isaw a bird i came close to it and put my finger out and it flew/jump on my finger i was surprise because it was a little bird and those bird mostly fly away from you, I know they can be aggressive, but I don't want school getting in my way of life and trying thing out like when i had my golden fish for the first time we learn a lot from our mistake and i am graceful my 2 golden fish are healthy, it never to young to learn something new. Well they are in general wild bird even if you tame them, they might listen but they are still wild so I wouldn't be surprise if the bird was aggressive, and I meant when I get older not right now, my family agree to get one bird, though I want the bird to have a friend when I am gone to a trip. Though in general I would love to see a baby cockatiel. I am going start volunteering to the zoo, when we move, only way I agree to move is because more animals and closer vet and pet store. Sorry again about my spelling I hurt my arm so it a bit hard to type.

hey again! i'm pretty sure i've finally persuaded my parents into getting me a dove! i just wanted to make sure I would be getting the right cage though. the cage im looking into is 23.5"L x 15"W x 23.5"H. would these lengths be good for one Diamond Dove?

Sounds like a perfect cage! Have you decided if you will clip the wings? That's about the minimum size (for two doves), so one should be perfect in there. Try and look for a dove that has a large red eye ring, males seem to make a better pet since females are constantly sitting on and laying eggs. After you get your dove, be sure to post some pictures! :3

after about two weeks, yeah, I'm pretty sure I'll clip it's wings. i don't want it to hate me though while our relationship is still fragile, so i'll wait a while before doing so. and when I do, my friend is an expert at it and if not her, her cousin is so i'll get them to help me clip the wings c: yeah, and I thought the same thing too, about getting a male. i know that females can die very quickly if they don't have enough calcium from laying eggs and i'm pretty sure most male dove's coos will be prettier, so I thought a male would be best to have. thank you so much! i will update once i get mine, hopefully this weekend c;

My female dove had up to eight eggs at one point, because she just wouldn't abandon the nest. She also takes in eggs from other birds! From my experience, it's always best to leave their wings long. Two of my doves once had their wings clipped, and they absolutely hated it. They wouldn't move, and would rather fall off the perch than open their wings to balance themselves. In my opinion it does a lot more damage then good, and if they end up hitting the wings against something they will bleed out. I wouldn't recommend it, but I think it would have a better quality of life with it's wings. After you finish bonding with it, if you decide not to clip the wings, you can teach them to fly to you quite easily; the three week old babies learned how and will fly all around you, before perching back on your hand. They'll even fly to you from a perch!

yeah the only reason why I say I would clip it's wings is because my room has a... hole? of sorts and I'm afraid if it ever got out it would fly right out of my room or stay on the 'hole' and not come down. I would only clip it for a while, though, until we have really bonded. (and don't worry about me not letting it out to fly, I will bring it in another room and let it stretch out its wings c;)

Oh, would there be any way to cover the hole? Maybe with something like a towel? They are very good at flying through narrow spots so I see why it's a concern. The hole should probably be fixed or blocked before letting the dove out. If the hole can't be fixed or covered, and clipping is required, then the wings need to be clipped in a certain way so the bird can still lift itself off the floor of the cage, but if it were to fall off something it can still safely glide down instead of crashing at the bottom. Make sure that no secondary flight feathers are clipped, and only clip two primaries at a time until the dove can get about three feet off the ground. Remember that they will fly down to the ground, so he'll need just enough lift to get back up off the floor. Careful not to step on him when he's on the floor. c:

How many birds do you own? ( if applicable): Well technically they are my mums, but i am going to be taming the male and mum will tame the female- hopefully anyways. We had started trying to tame the female. She had got round to sorta taking a bit of apple from my hand....when she wanted to, but will probs have to start again after letting the male settle in.They are Red Pennants, one male and one female. The female has been rather....quiet and well sad i suppose for a bit. When we first got her, she was noisy but she didn't play very much. So we think having the male around might cheer her up a bit. And it seems to be working. I can hear them both now, when before she hardly made a sound. And they have both been pulling the paper stuff out of one of the toys already. xD

How long have you had them?: We have had the female for almost two months now. But my colleague at the pet shop i work in has been trying to convince my mum to have the male since we had the female and today she succeded, lol.

What brings you to the bird chat?: Curiosity and the desire to talk about birds.

of course, I'd let him/her still have gliding powers cx I have dogs, and there is practically no chance that it'd ever happen, but if my dogs were to come in my room and knock over the cage, I'd like him/her to be able to glide away. And about the 'hole' its not really a hole? it's just like my walls are... half walls? kinda like this. I just wouldn't want it flying up to the top of the wall, and us not being able to get to it. It's a long fall down too, so if it got scared and fell, it would be seriously injured. I just want to make sure my bird would be living a safe lifestyle, and clipping wings in the beginning sounds the best. c: I understand where you are coming from though, and thank you. I would bring the dove into another, closed-off room so it could fly around with supervision. c:
