Wow, those two posts took out, like, 12 commands. Everyone wanted to poke the rock, I guess.

Just as a warning, I'm going to be gone for about three days. I'll try to get some updates in.

Theory:The rocks are manifestations of memories of the dead. The place they're in is a grave. The first one may have been prone to headaches, causing them to be aggressive, and the headaches were soothed by the sea. The second one may have been very irritable and impatient, usually lashing out and being even more aggressive. The changing background is one of their memories.
