xxxxxx gullchaser lived on a farm with her parents before she joined streamclan. she - known to her parents and the elderly woman that owned the land the three cats lived on as raini - and her family had a fine life there. they lived in a large barn house and were content with catching mice all day and lounging in their beds of straw. nonetheless, raini had always craved adventure from the day she was born into her comfortable, easy lifestyle. her parents, tom and naissa, often found their daughter - whom they thought was foolish for wanting the harsh life of one of the "mountain cats" nearby - sitting by the barn's doors or leaning out of windowsills to gaze at the wood beyond their stretch of farmland. raini couldn't hope to describe the tug that the forest and the distant, towering mountains had on her to them; she knew that they would never be able to comprehend what stirred within her when she gazed out into the dead of night, eyes sorrowful and longing. she was obsessed with leaving the farm and her parents, because she just knew that there was something more to her life than growing plump on prey that leaped into her paws.
xxxxxx but raini found that she didn't have it within her to abandon all she'd ever known so she, begrudgingly, stayed where she was until she was around seventeen moons old. her incentive to flee from the barn and her parents' judgmental, bemused comments came one day when tom and naissa got into a fight. up until recently, they'd been arguing with one another more and more, so raini wasn't surprised when soon their claws were unsheathed and their teeth were bared and they were screeching at the top of their lungs at one another. they'd never been the most delightful of cats anyway; therefore, it hadn't come as a shock to their daughter at all when they began to show signs that they were ready to physically duke it out rather than verbally. raini knew that things would never get so bad between her parents that they'd actually lash out at one another... right?
xxxxxx to give the quarreling pair some space, she decided that it was best to leave them be and go ease her mind by hunting; the molly set off to do just that at about sunhigh. she knew when she wasn't wanted and knew that she'd probably just fuel either her mother or father's fire by saying something to put one of them off. raini came back home from the plains beyond the barn at sunset with a rabbit, pleased with herself and her hunting skills and knowing that her parents would like the treat after a long day of bickering. however - once raini had slipped through the barn's rickety doors, the rabbit was forgotten because everything before her was a disaster zone.
xxxxxx tom and naissa were - quite literally - tearing one another apart. clumps of fur floated in the air and were scattered across the floor, and blood was splattered all over the straw. raini simply stood there, jaws agape and back arched in horror, as her mother was the first one to fall to the earth with a whimper and a loud thud. tom followed suit, collapsing on top of his mate's unmoving body. they were both.. dead. and she'd watched them kill themselves, yet had done nothing about it! they'd.. killed one another. choking on her own wailing sobs and forgetting her catch, raini turned tail and fled from the barn and her parents' poisoned love and their battered, frozen bodies to the only place that she knew would ever be her true home: the mountains.
xxxxxx the barnyard cat didn't stop pelting until she couldn't take another paw step onward, and, by then, she was lost and alone and deep in the woods. running from her horror had exhausted her, so raini dragged herself under a clump of ferns and collapsed on the cool, mossy forest floor with one final, wordless mew of grief. and that was where the streamclan warriors found her, sobbing quietly under a swollen sea of ferns. that was where they took pity on the young molly and led her back to their camp. and that was where raini's world changed forever and she traded one life for another one.
xxxxxx when raini woke up the next day in a foreign place with foreign cats, she was, at first, in shock, but then the events of the night came rushing back to her. she realized that, yes, although her parents had virtually torn one another to pieces, she was finally getting what she'd always wanted: her freedom. there was nothing that the gray and white couldn't do, because she was free of her parents' ridiculing and was finally, finally, living with the wild cats of the wood!
xxxxxx pleading her case to the cats that she soon learned called themselves "streamclan warriors", raini began to train with the clan's apprentices. she excelled at stalking and swimming and hunting and in battle - pretty much every skill that the warriors taught her. it was, eerily, as if she'd been born to live feral and not cooped up in a bar. as if her body had been ready for the tests streamclan would put her up to long before she'd made the decision to join the clan. it wasn't long before raini caught the leader's eye, and she was soon renamed gullchaser.
xxxxxx gullchaser, the newly made warrior had thought as she'd been smothered with her clanmates' affectionate purrs and nuzzles. i really am starting anew here. my parents' deaths have marred me forever, but.. at least i don't have to carry the name they chose for me anymore. here, i am more free than i've ever been. here, i am home. but, no matter how free gullchaser was, she still couldn't escape the terror of what she'd saw go down in the barn those pawful of moons ago. sure, although the lanky molly was one of the friendliest and kindest warriors of the clan, deep down, she was flailing and grieving inside. she, however, didn't want her clanmates to worry about her, so she decided that it was best to always have a smile on her face; she decided that it was best to be something that she was, really, not, because she'd learned what a cat could hide under all their optimistic words. and that was awful things.
xxxxxx in truth, watching her parents rip themselves apart over some petty, stupid argument had forced gullchaser into the mindset that true love didn't exist, and that she'd never find it. that wasn't to say that the young warrior didn't want love and a constant companion at her side, because she did want a mate - someone she could rely on and trust. she just fears that, one day, she will meet her mother's fate, and that any future love interest she has will meet her father's. thus, charismatic and outgoing and annoyingly perky as gullchaser may be, she hides deep mental scars that no cat, she knows, will ever be able to heal. but - she hopes against hope that someone will come along and stitch her back together again.
