The World Has Become A Wasteland.
Man has finally done it. They broke the world. Too much pollution, criminals, and overpopulation have ruined the Earth completely. Although much time has passed since then, the world is no better off. In fact, things may have gotten worse.
In the past few decades, whole other species of humans have come into being, and supernatural forces are slowly being discovered. The new humans species are scorned. Treated less than worthlessly. Everyone knows it was bound to happen, after all, the new humans aren't like regular ones. They are stronger, scarier, and hideous. Some have gills, others are covered in fur, have horns, hooves, you name it, it probably exists. Then there are the shifters. These are the luckiest species, they are able to morph between species. Although the can't be a full human, they will always have at least one bizarre trait, they are able to change to a form that best suits the occasion.
Supernatural forces are being discovered. Some are evil, some are good, and some are neutral. They are able to be summoned, or just simply come out at will. People are very afraid of this. People who have some sort of magic in them are feared, rather than despised. They are outcasts and nobody will socialize with them. They tend to keep their distance from each other as well... But not all of them are bad, they're just misunderstood. Some of them.
The new earth isn't pleasant. Cities still exist, but they are very spread out. Inbetween them is either scorching desert, unnaturally freezing mountains, or inhumanly humid and large forests. The biggest cities are more modern, and some might even call them happier, but that doesn't mean there it less suffering. The big cities are usually for humans only. Humanoids are unable to live anywhere there, so the ones there mostly live on the streets. There are cities just for the shifters, and the strangers, the creatues and the freaks. Cities just like that are dirty and shabby, wrecked buildings, a higher crime rate, just overall misery. But it's not like they can do anything.
