I pushed the rabbit towards Ravenkit, thinking over his question. Many cats had had the exact same process. How could kits help? But none of them had dared to cross Heathersong. Smart of them. I thought drily. "I suppose that kits and apprentices don't think the same way warriors do. This problem will require a lot of thinking and planning." I was surprised at how easily my scattered ideas came together. As soon as it was out of my mouth, it made sense. "I guess StarClan thought you two were the most ingenious kits around."

The snow had just numbed my black paw pads to the point that I wasn't cold anymore when Pinewhisker and I broke through a clump of pines and into the Gathering-place. Just my luck. Defrosting was the least pleasant part of the whole endeavor. I shook my paws free of the dampness and sat down just beneath an overhanging pine bough. The medicine cat who had accompanied me stayed standing, tasting the air with open jaws. I spotted the LeafClan cats already here, and I thought I heard faint meowing from the other side of the Centertree. WaterClan or AirClan, maybe. Without warning, I was struck by a paralyzing anxiety. I didn't want to be here. Not now, not ever. The dark hopelessness that framed our cause settled over me, as I was sure it was to all the others chosen to gather here this gloomy morning. Useless...I'm useless...

My ice blue eyes scoured the rocky hills before me; Islandsong, padding beside me, was just as alert. We should be coming up on the Centertree any moment now... There! The hickory trees parted to reveal the towering trunk of the gathering-place of the PowerClans. "Well, here goes," I murmured, not particularly caring if Islandsong heard or answered. We stepped across the sandy ground in the clearing, heading straight for Heathersong and her small patrol. It appeared that the cats that had already arrived were clustered together by clan, afraid to meet and greet. Thanks to the intensity the crackled in the air, I couldn't blame them. "Good morning, Heathersong," I meowed, dipping my head to the tabby medicine cat. She looked up from her paws to smile and dip her head to me. I returned the favor, a bit of my initial nervousness gone at her friendly greeting. "Good morning, Whiterunner," she mewed, meeting my eyes steadily. She laughed briefly. "You're the first cat who's had the courage to come up to me so far." I smiled, recalling my earlier observations. "Well, RockClan isn't full of nervous cowards like some of the other clans are." I grinned at Islandsong, hoping she would appreciate my quip.
