Long post ahead that is literally all about my thoughts on Plumerian anatomy
the post i did on ears

And I have a question; I see both, so I'm curious - are Plumies more dog-like or cat-like in their general anatomy/behavior?

I'm sure they're more cat like? I draw them closer to dogs because I'm better at canine anatomy, so I'm sure it's not too big of a deal.

By the way, are there any anatomy references made for plumies?

By the way, that's an excellent question. They appear a bit more feline to me, but as somnology said, I believe it comes down to drawing preference.

Some people draw them differently, so I'm not quite sure ; n ;

I generally like to think that plumerians are more cat-like. Their legs, tails, and faces hold more of a feline quality, but their spin is what reminds me of a fox. They carry their head high like a fox, unlike the low set of a leopard. Although both animals are capable of a similar range of motion for their heads, they typically carry them differently.

Now to look at how I usually decide on the general skeletal structure of the anatomy. Like always references are your best friend and although I traced the skeletons onto them for this reference guide, I would strongly advise not doing that as it doesn't help you improve on your skills. Instead, have an image next to your drawing and look at it while you draw, try to fix errors without tracing! It will help you get a better understanding of anatomy as a whole and soon you won't need a reference. (No shame in refs, just always make sure to credit it :^) I still use references a lot in my classes)

Take a look at these skeletons here of a leopard (left) and a fox (right). I broke down their skeletal anatomy into basic lines and circles. I like having a visual as to where the joints, spine, and bones are on the real animals to give our imaginary animal structure. Notice the length differences in the bones I've numbered. 5 & 6 on the leopard are much more equal in length where 5 & 6 on the fox are completely different lengths. This can really effect how canine or feline your character looks, as well as how proportionally correct they look.

I'm using Akatora as my guinea pig here to show you guys how I would place skeletons on the plumerian lines. Personally I don't draw plumies to these proportions exactly and lean towards 5 & 6 being equal. Like this:

Which also isn't anatomically correct to any of the above references, so it is considered stylize and breaks the rules. (Note: you must know the rules of anatomy to break them. Don't use stylizing as an excuse)


The next bit is for you visual guys, I basically just put a skeleton on a ton of different leopard and fox poses to maybe help you guys understand what I'm getting at. I really use these to help me with the basic structure and anatomy of everything. Different poses will change the perspective of the legs so you will have to make some lines shorter due to foreshortening or circumstances of the like.

And lastly just a quick step-by-step of my own personal "process" :

All in all just have fun with drawing and experimenting. We are lucky because Char never specified which breed of leopard or fox that plumerians are a hybrid of so this species is pretty forgiving for any style. There are so many breeds to reference and choose from for your plumerian so why not add diversity to the pool and give their anatomy some flair?

I know I didn't really tell you guys any hard set rules for plumerians in particular and that's just because this is my interpretation. Maybe in the future Char will put specific anatomy rules in place and if that happens I'm excited to see what they are. But, until then I think you guys can have fun with mix and matching all kinds of leopards and foxes.

Also let me know if you would like to collaborate to make more of these, edit the info I provided here, or any suggestions as to other tutorials you would like to see. I would really like to be helpful in this community and I think tutorials are fun. Although I may not be the best at them lmao,, qwq
