"You're my apprentice." Torrence said, "And when I took you on, I made myself a promise. I wouldn't fail this time."

Riley - male, 15, apprentice - Torrence
"But I quit." Riley said halfheartedly, regretting his decision now. Again, he'd reacted instead of acting. His biggest flaw. He finally opened his eyes and glanced over at Torrence, worried and confused.

Torrence had been trying to keep a straight face, but let the finest bit of a smile slip. "You can't quit being a Ranger. Once a Ranger, always a Ranger." He nodded to the double sheath on the table next to Riley's bed. "I tell you what we're starting over from yesterday morning. None of today's junk happened. Sound good to you?"

Riley - male, 15, apprentice - Torrence
After a moment's hesitation, Riley nodded slowly, his eyes landing on the double sheathe that Torrence had motioned to. "Alright." He said weakly, leaning his head back again. After a difficult, but brief, inner battle, he added a very quick and quiet, "Sorry."

"Yea, well, I shouldn't have yelled at you either. Even?" Torrence asked, holding out his hand to Riley.

"I deserved it like heck." Riley muttered glumly, but reluctantly lifted his hand, sealing the deal with Torrence. He didn't smile, still upset that he'd messed up so bad and nearly given up his one chance to change and make a difference in the world.

Torrence smiled, "By the way, what happened to you? You look like you were run over by a herd of wild horses. Want some coffee??"

Riley - male, 15, apprentice - Torrence
"Runaway carriage." Riley groaned. "The horses swerved at the last second and the carriage came around and knocked me back. That's all I remember." He said, rubbing his head and pausing as he felt the bandage. "Ow." He grumbled, then nodded. "Yeah, okay." That addiction to coffee that all ranger's possessed was starting to become a part of who he was.

Torrence winced, "Yipes. You definitely need some coffee. Honey, sugar or milk?" Torrence was still trying to remember what he put in his coffee, let alone what his apprentice did.

"Honey." Riley replied, closing his eyes again. He realized that since it was now late morning, he'd missed about half a night's sleep. That, in addition to getting slammed by a runaway carriage, had successfully drained the boy's energy.
