Taming Entry;
For once in my life, Ink wasn’t with me when I went out dragon searching this sunny weekend. He was sleeping rather peacefully in the barn when I left, looking completely innocent despite his mischievous temperament. I’d left with a sack of meat, my spear and shield, and of course, the hallmarked riding whip. Feeling more prepared than I’d ever been, I set off for the craggy peaks in hopes of coming across a new mount to bring home with pride.
It’s strange, but I’ve always been fascinated with Timberjacks. They just seemed like such gorgeous, graceful, mighty creatures, the black stallions of Berk, if you will. It makes sense, then, that I got incredibly excited when I saw one winging its way over the peaks. Hurriedly I set off jogging after it, hoping to perhaps catch its attention. I kept my eyes on the peak it had just flown past, squinting into the early afternoon sun when the ground slipped out from under me.
I expected to find that I’d simply slipped on the admittedly loose terrain, so it was quite a shock to find myself falling into what appeared to be the den of some animal. A large animal. I knew well by now not to jump up and shout; instead, I lay still aside from slowly turning my head to peer into the darkness.
Indeed, two curious red eyes met mine, a horned nose snuffling in mild fright as the reptile stared at me. Evidently I had fallen into the den of a young Changewing. Slowly, I pulled the meat I’d brought out to make peace with the creature, carefully sliding it out away from me so it didn’t mistake me for the snack. It didn’t seem too frightened, perhaps because the opening to the den was right above its head; it could easily escape me if it chose.
Too bad then, that right as it finally gathered the courage to grab at the treat I sneezed unexpectedly. In a flash, the white-and-red dragon was gone; I saw a flash of brown as it rose, meaning it was probably going to hide from me in a spot I’d never find it. Sighing, I decided to head back further into the cave; perhaps there were more where that one had come from?
It was a terrible sight to see, what I found back there. A massive mother Changewing, emaciated and clearly very ill from the presence of blood and vomit in close proximity to her. Dead, as dead as the rocks around us. This poor little one had lost its mother; of course it was afraid! Perhaps it was an unusually dependent dragon, considering most would have left their mothers at its age.
Sighing, I finally resigned myself to try another dragon. Maybe the Timberjack was still around, though for whatever reason I was rather uninterested in it at this point. This Changewing wasn’t going to live for long; it obviously didn’t know how to be a dragon, and may not have ever left that cave for more than a few hours.
Crawling out of the cave, I stood and glanced around, trying to catch sight of any evidence of a present dragon. All I saw were a few footprints and some scuffle marks near the cave’s mouth.
Behind me, a whuffling sound.
I whirled around and chuckled loudly at the now-brown beast. Obviously it - she - was curious, and probably rather hungry, too. It wasn’t hard to convince her I wasn’t so bad with a bit of food, and, to my surprise, she let me scratch her neck - and seemed to enjoy it so much she might as well have been thumping her foot. I decided that the rope would not be a good idea, considering how spooky she seemed, and simply allowed her to follow me at will. It took her awhile, but finally she broke her camouflage and began to slink after me.
Looking her over, I decided to name her Pulse; the markings on her chest reminded me of a heart monitor. It appears her mother died fairly recently, since she’s possibly the clingiest dragon I’ve ever met; apparently I’m her new mom. Looks like I’m going to be sleeping in the barn tonight unless I want to wake up to a Changewing with abandonment issues at the foot of my bed.
