For those of you with Service Dogs, do you have any training tips on getting a dog to go get someone's attention? I was very sick today due to my chronic headache. I needed my mom, but she's heard of hearing and I have to yell, almost to the point of screaming in the hopes she'll hear me. And as loud noise+migraine do not mix well I'd like to teach Chloe to go get her attention. The only thing I can think of is work with telling Chloe to 'go get Grandma' then having Mom whistle to call her and have mom reward her when she goes to her. Is there a better way to teach this behavior? Chloe is physically and mentally capable of the task, I'm just not sure how to train it.
normaly you learn this when you talk with a Trainer for this line of work, or in Training centres...but as you seem to learn on your own...maybe teach him to bark, or go get youre mom with his leache or something she can take easyly in the mouth and you have near your bed or with you...when you Train him that her goes and bring her leashe or something else to the next Person they understand that you Need help...i dont Need to Train in this way of health Problems, so im no big help... i only knw one older guy who traines his dog to pull him out of danger and when possible pull him to the next person who can help-and when not possible then to bark or bring Person to his owner-...but that is not something you Need as you dont get this typ of attacks...so maybe your way could be the right....lie still on your bed give your dog a scarf-leashe or so and tell her to get help...and this you can Train the best with a toy she is crazy and that you mom keeps on her or near her or treats....so your dog learns atleast in the beginning that your mom is great and plys with her when you send her there and they both come back to you then all is fun or nice treats...
-> but i think the best would be to teach her with a bandana that she wears all the time...when you have Trouble and Need help pull it off and give to hold with the command to get help or your mom....when you are outside and Need help you could put some Thing on the bandana that says that the owner of this dog Needs help when she Comes to them Holding it in her mouth and that she will bring them to you and they please want to follow... then you also get help from strangers that dont know how a Service dog works.
--ohh... and the reward she gets when she brings your mom to your person...you give it or when you cant from your mom...when she gets it already when she goes to your mom she will maybe not run back asap to you like a good Service dog should but waits for more, but when she learns to get help or your mom and bring them back to you then you will be soooo happy with her...and when its only some Scratching of the ears when you cant move from hurt.... your moms reward cant be bether than yours...you are you Dogs one and only most important Person....the other Person in your home she can like and Play with...

Thanks Luzien, I love the bandana idea. Unfortunately I think having her carry it that it too complicated for Chloe right now. I've been working with her on holding something in her mouth without too much success. She's no a dog who fetches or is toy motivated. But she will carry around a chewy so I'm hoping eventually she'll get it.
I only need her to go get mom in the house, not outside, so tying a bandana to her collar would be a great way to let mom know I need her, otherwise she might just think Chloe needs to go out or wants a treat. Chloe knows who to sucker in that regard, lol. I could make some cheap bandanas and keep them in places where I might need them .
Barking for attention would be great, but again a difficult thing to train Chloe to do which will take time, since she's not prone to barking when excited. She's more of a whiner but whines over anything. Also I think the bandana is better than a bark, as I would rather keep her barking as an alert bark for someone being at the door.
All good ideas though. And I'll check out those links. Thanks so much!

thn maybe turn the bandana around....like she is one side colorful and the other with the writing

so your mom sees with one look "Ahh my kid Needs help"
then she does not need to carry anything and only Needs to go get help, that could be the easyst way^^
the first times in training she can get a little treat from your mom, and when she brings her back to you she gets some real Grand treat and lots of happiness from you...and later in Training she will be so fast to go get your mom and will nearly pull her back to you and only gets from you something and not your mom...
good luck , hope you write how the Training goes^^

^ Thanks Luzien. We did a very short training session with her this morning. She wouldn't go from the kitchen with me to the living room so I lowered the criteria and just had her go half way across the living room. She did well, considering when we first got her we tried a similar exercise and she got so confused and stressed she left the room. Today she was all wagging tail and seemed to understand that it was all fun and treats to "go get Grandma".

thats great that the Training does go well...and its not bad to step back sometimes....and its great that she is not stressed anymore:D
do you know what i find cute....the "go get grandma".... i also say when i talk with my dog that she should go to grandma( when i want her to bring something to my mom^^)....and when i talk to my mom that she should be not so nice/or more nice with her grandchild.....my mom is then always "im no grandma".... ^^ ahhh yes they are our Little Babys nehhh

^ LOL, my Mom loves being "Grandma" to her grand-dog. Chloe is spoiled rotten.

My mom felt bad that I would leave the living room and wait for Chloe to realize I'm not coming back and get off the couch to follow me. She started picking her up and carrying her back to my room, so now if Mom is there Chloe will look at her and then sit up and stretch, waiting for Mom to pick her up and carry her back.

Hello, sorry to be a bother, I'm at my wits ends with my dog pooping/peeing in my house. He's a 2 year old stubborn rescue dog that won't toilet train. I've had him checked with a vets and they said there is nothing wrong with him to cause him to poop/pee in the house and even though I was sure I was toilet training him the correct way (putting him outside until he goes and then praising him. Putting him out when he does go inside), I checked with a dog trainer and a dog behaviorist who both agree that I'm doing all I can. But I've been toilet training for over a year now and he still poops/pees in the house at least 1 every few days during the night/day. We've had no routine changes, he's just being naughty.
I've been looking at getting him a dog wrap to stop the peeing but I wasn't really sure since I've never brought anything like this with my other dogs. I was wondering if there is some-thing that can also stop him pooping in the house. Also preferably some-thing that can be rewashed if he soils it.
Any help and I will love you forever.
Thanks :)
Sorry for my slow response time on RP's. My new job steals ALL my time. :(

That doesn't sound fun.
I'd suggest crate training and umbilical cord training (have him on leash attached to you). So he's either in an area that he (hopefully) doesn't want to go to the bathroom in for nights or when you're not home. Then have him on leash and attached to you so he's supervised and you'll be better able to see his signs and take him outside.
I dog sat a friend's foster puppy and it was insanely frustrating taking care of him because he purposefully went to the bathroom inside (friend let him do his business in her house). It definitely wasn't just he didn't know better. He would be outside for an hour, pop inside, do his business and then go back outside. I wish I had known about umbilical training.
EDIT: Forgot to add some articles that could be useful.

Thanks

Please dont wrap the dog up...
for a short time of Training him to be clean you can use a big dog crate to Keep him in when you are away or cant watch him for some time....and dont put him in the bathroom or shower as i did read in an dog Forum...
you ven could offer him for the beginning a adult dog toilet ....for accidents...but i would try it with the dog crate and running ... it should go faster....
that takes sometimes time!! and Patience!
i did never had a rescue dog, but other that we sometimes meet on our walks...some get it after some days other month, some seem clean but have a accident when stressed or sick...
when you go away for short time put him in a large dog crate there he will not do it.
at home you go out as soon as you are back to the place he should go toilet...when he does not Need and you have time go for a walk or run...and tell him at places where he can go to go...
you Need to stay at his Training...you cant let him out thee times a day ....it will be much more in the first days or weeks...
at first you may Need to go every hour, he Needs to be in the same room so you see when he gets a bit nervous or Looks around for a place to go.....then run as fast as possible outside and tell to go....
the dog of my parents had the Problem that she is very silent when she Needs to go outside...she walks to the door Looks around jumps on place runs around nervously and when nobody is there and she really cant hold it she goes toilet...we did Train her when she was a puppy with the crate and only one room she could stay in till she was bether..she got it in one week....now she run around and tapps whoever is there with a paw or nose...and when we leave for more than 2 hours she goes in her sleeping crate or goes with my dad and stays in his car when not to cold or hot...
a dog bell is also great...you can teach him with a crate or without....to tuch the bell with paw or nose and then you run outside with him...there are also strings with bells on it to put on the door that the dog can push....
but you Need to go every hour at first, at the slightest sign that he Looks at the door or Looks for a place...and while you run out the door you shout happily "good Boy lets go potty" or something like this, thats also like a mix between praise and Play for him, and then tell to go toilet...
you Need times to go....the first Thing you do after wake up...run out open crate take dog and run out with him with the words i did write above....and the last Thing bevor going to bed...and when the crate is in the first weeks neer your bed or where you can hear him wwhimper ist even bether....you may must start like with a puppy...
be Patient, always calm, dont get angry...and when not in front of dog... it will get bether when he learns that he gets help going out, that he can go to you or ring bell when needing the toilet....
dont worry ist only in the beginning that you Need to run every hour, maybe Keep the dog on a leashe neer you for first days, that he cant go out of your view...
later it will be two hours -three- four...but you Need to give him the workout each day 2-3times...and dont think in the first days...aww i dont wanna go out he can stay two hours more...constant work on a Problem....
also a good help can be...a loooooong walk-run-Play in the morning with lots of stopps and "go toilet's
...midday...afternoon....(each 1 hour atleast)
one guy did Train his dog with a crate, lots of warm water-meat (2-3l) when the dog did not want to go outside...he did offer the dog every 1/4 hour to go out pee and poo at the first days and the dog did learn to bark when he did want out...and was house trained after a week...but he also did go on 3 long walk-runs each day. with some more between at the beginning.
ohh...and when you see him doing his Business...cry "NO" scoope him up while doing it and sitting him outside....dont worry you can clean up anything and when you get some pee on you clothing wash them, but he learns that he Needs to do it outtside and that you dont let him do it in the house, dont be angry but praise him when he finishes his Business outside ...or even when he only stands in the grass .....no hitting shouting ....but when you are fast and see how he putts his behind down to do his Business in the house you could trow something on the ground, scoope him up and run outside telling him to go toilet....with the Little fright and the gentle words after he sees that you only wanted to bring him outside but had Trouble Holding whatever you did trow to the ground...so ist not really a punishment but only a owner who is a bit clumsy in his eyes...and you also do it with puppys...^^
scoope up or pull out when big dog as fast as possible and crazy happiness over every drop of pee outside^^ thats dog owners for you...i think we are the only who are happy and tell there"baby" how "nice toilet ya did go"
not sure if you did understand what i did mean, or if this helps at all...you can tell when not, i try to do bether
