First meeting

Postby aray17 » Fri Jan 22, 2016 5:19 am

#1; First Meeting (457 words)
It was my first big rescue of the season. I had just gotten my degrees and certifications to be able to join the rescue team. I was walking through the rescue site after all of the Kleeares had been loaded into trailers, looking at the horror of where all of those innocent Kleeares were kept for so long. I was one of the last volunteers to leave because I had to evaluate their living conditions for legal purposes. I walked up to the first stall on my left and saw all of the hoof marks on the walls. This stall seemed to have had a very violent Kleeare in it. After another half hour of evaluating the rest of the stalls, I walked up to my trailer. In it, the volunteers had put a Kleeare that was jumping and prancing. The trailer was shaking and the other Kleeares were neighing and spooked. So, I unlatched the trailer door and grabbed her lead and pulled her out of the trailer. I looked her in the eyes but she was focused on the birds in the trees. I stroked her face and ran my hand through her mane. She seemed to like it. She was relaxed and calm. I coaxed her back into the trailer as I stroked her neck and back. She went back into the trailer. I think I want this one. I went to the leader of the team and asked for permission to own the seal bay overo mare. She told me that the mare I wanted had ADHD and was high energy and that she was probably going to auction or a medical institution to be studied for ADHD in horses. I offered to allow doctors to come and study her at my ranch but the team leader said no. I still had faith that there would be a way that I would get her. I drove off somber but had a tiny bit of faith and hope. When we arrived at the auction, I sadly unloaded my trailer with the crazy but love-able mare. I led her to her auction stall and latched her gate. This was probably going to be the last time I would see her. I loaded the other two Kleeares into their stalls and signed out then left. I went back home and waited for the auction the next day. The next day, I went to the auction and put my bid in for the seal bay overo mare and waited for the phone call. Days went by but then I received that magical phone call that she was mine. Since I had faith and hope, I got her! I picked her up that day and brought her home.

Imani's stall and reaction

Postby aray17 » Fri Jan 22, 2016 5:19 am

#2; her stall and reaction (418 words)

The morning that I received the magical call that I had been waiting for. The call that said that I would own the girl of my dreams. The team leader called me that morning and told me that no one had placed a bid on the seal bay overo mare that I wanted. So, by default, I would get her since I was the only one who placed a bet on her. I quickly put new hay in her to-be stall and made sure it was clean and fresh. I grabbed her new pink halter that I had bought for the Kleeare that I was to get. I cleaned out my trailer and attached it to my truck and drove off to the auction site. I hopped out of my trailer and ran to the stall where I remembered I had put her. She was one of the last ones left there. The team leader said to me that the medical studies didn't need her after all and that I would have a difficult time training her but I was determined to train her to the best ability. I put her lead on after I signed the last of the paperwork. I loaded her into the trailer with excitement. She looked eager and happy to be moving. I stroked her face and played with her mane before I closed the trailer gate. I drove off with happiness. I started to think of names. I remembered that I had faith that I would get her. I thought that something that related to faith would be good. She had to have had faith when she was locked in her stall. Imani is a name that means faith in some African language. I then arrived at the ranch and my ranch hands and trainers came out to greet me and my new girl. I led her to her new stall and brought her in. My dog, Maitai, was laying around in her stall but Imani didn't seem to mind. Maitai welcomed Imani warmly and I took the lead off and closed the stall door. Maitai came out of the stall with me. But when I walked off, Maitai laid in front of Imani's stall and stayed there all day. Imani put her head through the stall door window and sniffed Maitai. Imani seemed to like Maitai. Imani jumped and pranced in her stall then laid down and burrowed into the fresh hay. She soon fell asleep and rested for the day.

How I get Imani to take her meds

Postby aray17 » Fri Jan 22, 2016 5:42 am

#3; How do I get my Kleeare to take her meds (201 words)
In order to get Imani to her meds, I grind them up and feed them to her with oats or other foods. She doesn't seem to mind them because the medications are supposedly tasteless. For liquid medicines, I mix them up with water, when the instructions say it's okay. She drinks them up slowly. Imani doesn't seem to mind the medicines. Since she's been through so much starvation, she loves to eat and will eat or drink anything. She is not picky and could care less if her food is a little old or tastes funky. But, I do not allow her to eat poorly or old food because I want her to be as healthy as possible. I follow the medication instructions very strictly and try to make sure that she takes every last drop. Sometimes she spaces out when taking them or gets distracted by the littlest things. When she is taking her meds, she will sometimes forget what she is doing and and she will walk off. So, to make sure that she eats the medicine mixed with food, I stand by her until she's done. I want her to be in perfect shape for the final evaluation.

Imani's friends

Postby aray17 » Fri Jan 22, 2016 6:01 am

#4; Her friends (337 words)
Mani's best friend is my Australian Shepherd dog named Maitai. Maitai and Mani run through the pasture together all day. Mani has more energy than the energizer bunny. I've never seen a horse or creature run as much as she does. My other Kleeare, Cyzarine, wears out very fast compared to Mani. Mani and Cyzarine get along very well and lay around in the pasture until Mani gets distracted by a butterfly or the flowers. Cyzarine is close to Mani but Maitai is even closer. Maitai has the same amount of energy as Mani. Mani and Maitai tackle each other and rough house a lot. Mani met Maitai the day of her arrival. When they saw each other, they became instant friends and were inseparable. They eat together, play together, and sleep in Mani's stall together. Mani hates being alone so when I take Maitai to go out on a walk, Mani gets very upset and stomps and kicks in her stall. When I ride Imani around the arena, Maitai likes to come along and run with her as well. On trail rides, Maitai tags along and doesn't seem to mind out pace. When we cross rivers or streams, Imani stops because Maitai doesn't like the water. So I get off and put Maitai on my lap. On days where I can't take Mani out riding, I put her in the Odyssey horse exerciser and Maitai will trot alongside her best friend. On rainy days, Mani and Maitai will cuddle in her stall or on the rare occasion, they will chase and play in the ran. On bath days, I leash up both of them side by side and wash them together since they never want to be alone. It sounds ridiculous how much they are together but Maitai was always alone on the ranch and I can imagine that when Imani was locked in her stall alone, she too needed a friend. They are sisters of different breeds and have the strongest friendship I've ever seen.

Imani's exercise routine

Postby aray17 » Fri Jan 22, 2016 6:24 am

#5; Her exercising routine (646 words)
To get my girl moving, I bring her into the arena and jog around with her for a while. When I get tired, I have her run around the arena while I supervise. Sometimes we play games like soccer, but she always lasts longer than me. She chases me around when I have treats and catches me pretty fast. She does not like to be attached to the jogger so I put her in the Odyssey Horse exerciser machine. When she's in the Odyssey machine, she sometimes spaces out and stops randomly. This is due to her ADHD, but the machine nudges her to keep on going and she starts up again. I haven't tried the saddle yet because I don't want to rush her progress.
A couple of weeks have gone by and I think it is now time to try the saddle. I picked out my lighter saddle and softer pad so she would be more willing to try the saddle and less frightened of it. I put her bridle and bit on with no problem. She must have been trained before. I gently placed her saddle and pad on her back and her ears remained flicking back and forth. She didn't seem nervous or tense. So after I finished adjusting her saddle, I hopped on her back, talking to her throughout the process to ease her. I gently nudged her to go and we started off in a slow trot. Then we broke out into a light canter. She seems to understand all of my signals and seems to have been saddle-trained. We cantered around the arena for a while as my fellow riders, trainers, and ranch-hands watched closely. They had all told me that she was too risky to try the saddle yet. But I had hope and faith in her. For the next week, I continued to ride her in the arena. I would try breaking into a gallop here and there if she had more energy than normal. Next, I wanted to try a trail ride since she had such success in the arena. Today it was a cool, misty morning. A little chilly but it didn't bug me. I put on my warmer riding jacket and boots then grabbed my helmet, heading for Imani's stall. Imani was giddy and excited as usual. I put her halter and lead on then tied her to the post to tack up. I put my English saddle and pad on her and a comfier bit and bridle on her since it was going to be a relaxed ride. A few of my other friends were bringing their Kleeares along. All of them fully trained. I would ride in the back of the pack as to prevent Imani from spooking or stopping the others. As we headed out on the trail through the forest, it dawned upon me that Mani might get distracted and stop. If that happened, I would have to nudge her along as to stay with the group. About a half hour into the ride, she saw a butterfly. It flew past her face and off into the forest. She turned her head and her eyes followed the butterfly flitting and fluttering. She started to step towards it to follow it but I tugged on her reins and got her back on the trail. Luckily, I caught her in time and she didn't wander off too far. She seemed to enjoy the trail ride. She seemed really calm and relaxed so this would become out daily routine. There is an open, green-grass meadow that we run through and play in during the spring. Only her, Maitai, and I go. It is beautiful and untouched by man. During the summer, we stay out of this field just in case of rattle snakes. But in the spring we come out all the time.

Final Evaluation

Postby aray17 » Fri Jan 22, 2016 6:28 am

#6; Final Evaluation (346 words)
Today was the day. It was the day where I would find out if she was back to normal or not. The examiner was to come at ten today but he came a little late. So this gave me some time to make sure she was perfect. i had just fed her this morning and examined her vitals and looked to see if there were any noticeable bones. Her ribs weren't noticeable and her eyes weren't dull. I gave her the best bath and brushing ever. I trimmed her mane and tail. Then, I polished and trimmed her hooves and checked for hoof rot. The examiner finally arrived. He was clicking his pen and tapping his board repetitively. He was anxious. I led him to Imani's stall and put her halter and lead on. She was nervous for the first time. I brought her to the post outside so he could see her clearly. He checked her vitals. Her heart rate was up a little. Her respiratory rate was up too. Her breathing was shallow and abnormal. I asked the examiner to step away for a minute. I stroked her mane and looked her in the eyes. She showed anxiety in her eyes. I asked the examiner if he could redo her tests. He agreed since he said that she was his only patient for the day. As he took her vitals for the second time, I rubbed her neck and it soothed her. Imani's respiratory and heart rates were normal. Her breathing was no longer shallow and her eyes did not show fear. She was back to normal weight and was over by 2 pounds. Her first pounds of healthy fat. Her bones needed to be a little stronger since she was slightly deficient of iron and calcium. Her hooves had no infections or fungi and her coat was shiny and clean. Her hearing was perfect as well. I was proud that she was finally healthy and back to normal. When the tests were over, I hugged her and gave her a couple of treats.
