you can see the shading well in this rat. They don't use a really soft brush, and look at their placement of the shading. This is key: it doesn't follow the lines. Shading isn't an outline of your lines- most people think that at first. With anatomy comes shading. Think when you are drawing: where are the dips in my subject? The stomach is usually a good place to shade: draw a fat U from leg to leg on the stomach, and then fill the bottom part in. When you see drawings just look to see how they shade. Now this doesn't mean copying their image (but of course I don't need to tell you that <3) just try to learn by looking at other people's shading. Kinda like learn from exampleAnd looking at tutorials is always a great idea too.

You got a good point. I notice how it doesn't particularly follow the lines of the drawing itself. I'll do a few practice sketches on the Sketches Oekaki board, but it might take a bit before I get the hang of it.
Lol I'm glad. I went over the whole picture with size 1 brush of Dodge and went along the general fur pattern of a fox or a canine, and then I went over it with burn with a 1 size brush. Then I sort of blended or smudged it a bit. I can't remember which one.
