a 2015 store pet is only worth a 2010 mid rare so I dont think a 2016 store pet would be worth a 2009 rare

Unfair to you--the Nick Horse is from May, while the dog was from Christmas, so by rarity it's already unfair to you. Though the Nick has lower demand, so depending on how you personally value it, the horse could swap for the dog, or maybe be fine for their whole side alone.

Was unfair to them, the '08 rare is unneeded.

Agreed that it would be unfair to the '09 rare. But I just want to point out that recent store pets ('16 and '15) are worth late '10 rares, not mid.
