A young twi’lek huddled underneath the house, her eyes closed to the screams of her family. She whimpered softly, her thin body shaking. An older twi’lek, her mother, wrapped her arms around the child.

It had begun about three hours ago; a ship had landed near her village on the planet of Ryloth. Her mother and father had exchanged glances, and sent her, their only child, under the small, three-roomed house they lived in, her mother following.

Vanha had hidden there for two hours before the noise had began. First there were shots, from both the twi’leks and their attackers, then there was screams as the attacks had broken through their small resistance.

The child felt tears prick her eyes, and wished for it to be over. Her mother held her closer.

“Shush now Vanha,” she whispered. “Shhh.” Vanha felt her mother’s hand gently stroke her lekku.

“When will it stop?” she whimpered.

“Soon, Vanny, soon,” her mother whispered. But the green twi’leks eyes were filled with tears as well, and she know it could be hours before the pirates left.

Mother and daughter sat huddled together, waiting for the nightmare to finish.

Then suddenly, the wooden covering was burst open, and Vanha screamed. A zebrak looked down, grinning evilly.

“Found some more,” he called, tuning to shout at someone out of the twi’leks’ sights.

Vanha and her mother were pulled out of the basement the pirates grinning at them. Vanha huddled close to her mother, and felt the gentle hand on her head. Her eyes filled with tears, tears of fear.

The leader of the pirates, a human male, leaned close to Vanha.

“Pretty li’l girl,” he muttered, felling her lekku. Vanha whimpered and pulled away.

“Leave her alone!” her mother said, anger in her stance.

“Got some fight eh?” the leader said, a smirk on his face. “Well then, lets beat it out of you,” and he raised a fist.

Vanha gasped, he was going to hit her mother. Anger filled her, and she felt a huge force inside her, wanting to get out. Frowning, she closed her eyes, and shoved. When she opened her eyes again, the pirate leader was on the ground, disbelieve in his face.

“What was that?” the zebrak muttered, glancing around nervously. Vanha moved closer to her mother, fear and confusion filling her. ‘Did I do that?’ she thought, worried.

But the leader had struggled up, anger evident in his face.

“You’ll pay for that?” he growled, seizing a blaster from one of his men. He advanced towards Vanha’s mother, thinking it was her that had pushed him.

The twi’lek stepped back, and Vanha with her. But the pirates closed in around them, circling them. Vanha shut her eyes and whimpered, a tear dripping from her face.

Something made her open her eyes. It was some sort of odd hum. She looked around, wondering where it was coming from.

Suddenly, one of the pirates shouted in fear, pointing. The others turned looking where he was gesturing. A human male, perhaps thirty-two years old, stood, his face determined. He was holding a strange weapon, one that Vanha had only heard of. It was a lightsaber, a green one. Beside him was a droid, a blue and white astromech.

“Who’re you?” the zebrak pirate growled.

“Luke Skywalker,” the stranger said. “I’d advise you to leave.”

There were murmurs among the pirates, they had heard of Luke Skywalker. No one had not heard about him, how he had helped overthrow the evil empire about a decade ago. This had all happened before Vanha was born, but she had heard stories.

“So what are you doing here, Luke Skywalker,” the leader said, disbelieve in his voice.

“That is none of your business,” the Jedi said. “I think you had better leave.”

“Or what?” the pirate leader sneered. Quickly, before she could react, he grabbed Vanha and jammed his blaster under her chin. She scream slightly, and whimpered. Her mother started forward, only to be stopped by one of the pirates. “If you come any closer, this child will die.” He smiled, thinking he had won. “I take it you don’t know who I am. Dessh Wagner, at your service. Or rather not.” He smirked.

Luke paused, then sighed. He held out his hand, and suddenly the blaster flew out of the pirate’s hand. The jedi caught it, and tossed it to the ground.

A look of shock on his face, the pirate shoved Vanha to the ground. She whimpered again, and crawled towards her mother.

“How?” the pirate asked.

“I take it you don’t know who you’re dealing with. Luke Skywalker. A Jedi knight.”
Dessh hesitated; everyone knew of the strange powers that Jedi held. Then he scowled, and seized another blaster. The Jedi raised his lightsaber, ready to deflect the laser that would shoot out of it. But the pirate did something unexpected. He turned the blaster onto Vanha’s mother, and fired.

The twi’lek gasped, a huge wound in her chest. She staggered, and fell. Vanha screamed, kneeing beside her.

“Mama!” she shouted, tears in her eyes. “Mama!”

She lay there, tears falling for a full minute, unaware of what the pirates were doing. Finally, she began to feel something other then shock. Anger began to fill her, anger against the pirates, anger against the world, even against the strange Jedi. She stood, her purple hand clenched at her side.

Again she felt power well up in her, and she let it lose. Then, without seeing what she had done, she fell unconscious, lying beside her dead mother.

Chapter two

“Good grief. Another one Master Luke? Is she alive?” a robotic voice woke Vanha, and she blinked her eyes open. A droid was standing over her, a golden humanoid.

“3PO leave her alone,” Vanha heard the voice of Luke. She struggled to sit up, and looked around. She seemed to be in some sort of ship. Luke was sitting across from her, a boy about eleven beside him. The golden droid, whom Luke had called 3PO, stood near by, the blue and white astromech beside it.

The golden droid lifted an arm in greeting.

“My name is C-3PO, human cyborg relations,” it said. The astromech buzzed. “Yes, yes R2, I am well aware of that!” C-3PO said, looking down at the smaller droid.

Vanha groaned, the droids were giving her a headache.

“3PO, please be quiet,” Luke said, standing.

“Oh, yes.” The droid looked at Vanha and back to Luke. Then he turned and left the room. The astromech, R2, followed.

“How are you feeling?” Luke asked.

Vanha shrugged.

“Where am I?” she asked, “Where’s Mama? What happened?” The questions came thick and fast.

“You’re on the Millennium Falcon,” Luke began, but was interrupted by the boy. He had black hair, and was dressed in clothes similar to Luke, a cloak of brown. Vanha could make out a lightsaber on his belt.

“Its my father’s ship,” he said. “I’m Ben, Ben Solo.”

Luke smiled at him.

“Why don’t you ask your father when we’ll arrive at Yaven?” he suggested, and the boy nodded, moving off.

The Jedi turned back to Vanha.

“What’s your name?” he asked gently.

“Vanha Ruwan,” she said. “Where’s Mama?” She remembered what had happened, but was sure that her mother would be alive.

Luke sighed.

“Look, Vanha, I’m sorry but your mother… she – she’s dead.”

Vanha stared at him, her eyes wide.

“No,” she whispered. “No! She’s alive!” Tears began forming again, dripping down her face. “Why did you take me here!” she shouted.

Luke laid a hand on her shoulder.

“Calm down Vanha. I’ve taken you here because you have a power, you can use the Force.” He sighed, guessing that the girl wouldn’t be able to understand what he was talking about. “What you did back there, pushing everyone over, that was what Jedi do. I’m going to train you to become a Jedi.”

Vanha sniffed.

“What if I don’t want to become a Jedi?” she muttered. Luke sighed. He was taking a risk, bringing the twi’lek to Yaven IV. She was full of anger; he had seen that in her. The last thing he wanted was another Sith like his father. But he couldn’t leave her on Ryloth, not with the pirates there. And she cold use the Force, that was the reason he was on Ryloth in the first place, to find Force sensitive people.

“Dad says we’ll be out of hyperspace in a few minutes,” Ben said, returning. Luke nodded, turning to him.

“Right then, prepare for landing.” He turned back to Vanha. “We’re nearly at the new Jedi temple, there I will train you to become a Jedi.”

The twi’lek nodded, still shocked at the news that her mother was gone. She closed her eyes, and lay back, shaking slightly, silent tears falling from her face.

**********************

The ship landed near a large building. It was bigger then any building that Vanha had seen on Ryloth, thought it was small compared to many buildings in the galaxy, and tiny compared to the old Jedi temple.

The captain of the ship, Ben’s father, Han Solo, and his co-pilot, a wookie called Chewbacca, followed them out.

“We’ll be heading back to D’Qar soon,” he said to Luke. The Jedi nodded.

Vanha turned her attention to the small group of young people gathering around. She looked around nervously, feeling out of place and very small.

A young human, who looked about her age, stepped froward, smiling at Vanha. She had wavy red hair that flowed down her back. Her eyes where grey, and she had a big smile.

“Hello, I’m Shosmi,” she said, holding out her hand. Vanha smiled, and took the small hand in her purple one.

“I’m Vanha,” she said. “Where are we?”

“We’re at the Jedi temple! I’ve been here most of my life. Do you want me to show you around?” she asked. Vanha nodded.

“Okay,” she said. She glanced back at Luke, but he was talking with another of the Jedi. “Let’s go.” She followed the other youngling into the temple, her grief almost forgotten. She was young, and she would recover soon enough.

Shosmi lead the twi’lek through the temple, almost running. Vanha looked around the large building in awe. There were rooms for the Younglings, which she was right now, rooms for the Padawans and for the full Jedi. Masker Skywalker, as everyone called Luke, had his own room.

The human lead her into a large room, with three bunk beds.

“You can sleep in here,” she said. “Ben, who used to sleep here, just became a Padawan.”

“What’s a Padawan?” Vanha asked, climbing onto the top bunk.

Shosmi lay on her bed.

“A Padawan is a Jedi in training. First we’re Younglings, and we’re taught basic stuff. Then we become Padawans, and go out into the world. Then we become Jedi Knights, and we’re really good at fighting and stuff.”

Vanha nodded, lying back on her bed. Only a few hours before she was on Ryloth. Now she was on another planet, lightyears away from her home and family.

Vanha and Shosmi were the youngest living in the new Jedi temple. Altogether, there were about a dozen younglings and Padawans being trained, the oldest being about nineteen.

Each morning they would rise an hour or so after sunrise, and have breakfast. They would then go to classes, in Vanha and Shosmi’s case reading, writing, maths, the basics. They would also learn history, the history of the Jedi, of the battle between the Rebels and the Empire, the old republic, and other such topics.

Then they would have lunch, and after that free time. In the afternoon, they would practice combat and Force usage.

Then they would have dinner, and after that free time until bed. Vanha quickly adjusted to the life in the Jedi temple, learning quickly and almost enjoying it. She and Shosmi soon formed a good friendship, and the two girls were hardly seen anywhere apart.

But there was an aching in her heart for her family, her mother and father, and her friends back on Ryloth. However hard she trained, how much she studied, the young twi’lek couldn’t forget what she had lost.

She trained hard, and grew skilled in using the practice lightsabers. She wasn’t as good at using the Force, but she was skilled.

The months past, and she began to forget. But she would never forget fully.

***************

Vanha and Shosmi were playing in their spare time before dinner. The Jedi temple rose behind them as they had a mock battle with their practice lightsabers. As they were only young, they didn’t have real lightsabers yet.

“So Master Skywalker took out his lightsaber, and turned it on. Darth Vader did the same,” a voice came to the Younglings, making them look up.

“Who’s that?” Vanha asked. Shosmi shrugged.

“Come on, let’s go find out!” she said, and the two children headed towards the voice.

One of the older Padawan, a zabrak called Briz, was telling a story to a small group of about three younger Padawan. They sat on the steps at the entrance to the Temple.

Briz grinned at Vanha and Shosmi as they approached, and continued with his story.

“So Master Skywalker fought his father, Darth Vader. The Evil Emperor, Darth Sidious, watched.”

Vanha sat down behind the other Padawan, Shosmi beside her.

“The battle between father and son was unlike any seen before. Their lightsabers clashed together, and they were each intent on killing the other. Then Master Skywalker managed to slip under Vader’s guard and stab him!

“The Sith’s dead body sank to the ground, and Master Skywalker turned to the Emperor. Then Luke leapt forward, and stabbed the Emperor! Master Skywalker had saved the galaxy!”

The Padawan looked at each other, and then began clamouring for another story, Vanha and Shosmi with them.

“That’s not how it happened,” a voice caused them all to turn. Luke stood at the bottom of the steps. He walked towards them as he spoke.

“I didn’t kill Vader. He saved me.” There were murmurs among the Padawan, and even Briz look surprised.

“But he was a Sith. One of the bad guys!” one of the Padawan said. Luke nodded.

“He was, but he saw me in trouble. The Emperor had me helpless, he was shocking me with force lighting.” The Jedi stopped beside the group. “Vader, my father, he picked up the Emperor and threw him down a shaft. But as he did, he was wounded.
I – I had to leave him behind.”

The small group looked up at him.

“But he was a Sith,” the same Padawan began.

“Yes, he was a Sith. But even Sith can change.” He smiled at them and continued into the Temple.

Briz grinned at the group.

“Well, maybe I should get my facts in order before telling stories,” he said, standing. The others grinned, and stood as well.

Briz continued into the temple and the other Padawan left the steps, going off to play elsewhere.

Vanha and Shosmi continued their game, until a shout interrupted them.

“It’s the Falcon!”

Vanha looked up, and saw, sure enough the Millennium Falcon flying towards the surface of the planet.

“Come on, let’s go meet Captain Solo!” Shosmi cried. Vanha grinned, and the two of them rushed towards the landing bay.

Chapter four

They weren’t the only ones with that idea, as a large group was already gathering around the place where the ship would land. Vanha noticed Ben Solo standing near the front, scuffing his boots on the ground.

The young man had changed a lot in the last year, he went from a bright, happy young boy to a moody, troubled one. No one knew why.

She turned her attention back to the ship, as the landing gear went down and the door opened. Captain Solo stepped out first, his wookie co-pilot after him. Chewbacca was holding a limp form, and Vanha caught a glimpse of orange skin.

‘Orange skin? What type of creature has orange skin?’ she thought.

Captain Solo glanced around the crowd, his gaze landing on Ben.

“I need to talk to Luke,” he said.

Ben shrugged.

“Well, you can’t talk to him right now. He’s not here,” he said, not looking at his father.

“Can you find him Ben. Tell him its urgent.”

“Very well, Father,” Ben said, rolling his eyes. “I shall find Master Skywalker.”

Han nodded, sadness in his eyes, and Ben turned and walked away.

Vanha glanced after him, wondering why he had acted like that to his father.

He soon returned, Luke with him.

“Hello, Han,” the Jedi called, “What are you doing here?”

Chewbacca stepped forward, the limp body in his arms. He growled softly.

“We were on Shili,” Captain Solo said. “Found this kid fighting off an Akul by himself. He managed to hold it back for a while, using the Force. We arrived just in time to see it throw him into a tree. He’s alive, but barely.”

Luke nodded, and gestured for a medi-droid to take the togruta to the healing room. He began to follow, but turned back to Han.

“Are you going to stick around for a while?” he asked. Han turned to Chewbacca, who roared softly in agreement.

“Yeah, we can stay a bit,” he said. “A few days.”

Luke nodded, and followed the Medi-droid.

Ben turned to leave, but a word from Han stopped him.

“Ben. Do you want to come back with us when we leave? You deserve a break?”

The boy turned to face his father.

“Why would I want to do that?” he asked.

Vanha, who noticed the exchange, saw Han’s shoulders sag, and the sadness and disappointment in his eyes.

“Your mother wants to see you again, you’ve been here for nearly two years.”

Ben looked his father in the eyes.

“I don’t want to see her,” he said, and turned, walking away.

Vanha turned to Shosmi, and they walked away from the ship.

“Did you see Ben?” Shosmi said. “That was so rude of him.”

Vanha nodded.

“If my parents where alive, I’d see them as much as I could.” She looked over at Han, who was watching his son stride off. “I fell sorry for Captain Solo,” she said.

Shosmi nodded.

“Why don’t we go see if the boy they brought is alright? If Master Skywalker lets us, that is,” she said, heading towards the Jedi temple.

Vanha nodded, forgetting Ben and his father.

“Okay!” she cried, “Race you!” And together the two girls rushed off.

They were about half way to the Temple when they reached Ben, walking towards the Temple as well.

Vanha hesitated, and glanced back at him.

“Wait here, I wanna talk to him,” she said. Shosmi nodded.

“I’ll come too,” she said.

The two girls walked back to where Ben was trudging along. He glanced up at them and nodded.

Vanha looked at Shosmi, who shrugged.

“That was kinda rude back there,” the twi’lek blurted.

Ben looked at her.

“So. I can do what I want,” he muttered, and continued walking.

Vanha glanced at Shosmi again, who rolled her eyes.

“You should be glad that your Mama and Papa are still alive. And be nice to them!” she tried again.

Ben stopped, and turned to her.

“I can do what I want. I will not have a child telling me what to do!” he snapped, before moving again.

“You’re not that much older then us!” Shosmi cried, but he ignored them.

Vanha sighed.

“What’s he so grumpy about?” she muttered.

“I dunno. Come on, let’s go see the togruta,” Shosmi said, and they began running again. They soon over took Ben, and he watched them with anger in his eyes.

Chapter five

They weren’t aloud to see the togruta that day, but Master Skywalker invited the girls to meet him a few days later, when he was feeling better.

He was sitting up in his bed, slurping noisily from a bowl of soup. The young togruta was about nine, a year or so older then Vanha and Shosmi.

Vanha couldn’t help staring. His skin was orange, and he had a lekku of blue and white. His left arm was bandaged, but he looked healthy.

“Hello,” he said, his spoon halfway to his mouth. “Who’re you?”

“I’m Vanha,” Vanha said.

“And I’m Shosmi!” the human said, smiling. “What is an Akul? Captain Solo said that you fought one!”

He grimaced.

“Yeah, I fought it, I guess. It’s a terrifying monster, with huge fangs!” He laid the bowl on his legs and gestured with his hands how large it was. “I nearly had it, but it knocked me into a tree.”

“Wow, that would have been scary!” Vanha cried.

“Na, I wasn’t scared. I shoved it back, I dunno how! It was scared. But it managed to hit me, and I was thrown against the tree. I would have got it.”

Vanha and Shosmi exchanged glances, each amazed at what he had been through.

“Okay, Maki needs some rest now,” Luke said, stepping forward. He had been standing near by, watching the younglings.

Vanha nodded, and Shosmi said, “Okay Master Skywalker!”

The two said goodbye to Maki, and left the room.

**********

Once Maki was healed, he moved into the room with Shosmi and Vanha. The three soon became fast friends, spending all their time together.

Time past, and they grew stronger, both in their Jedi skills and friendship. Maki proved adapt at Force use, already shown when he fought of the Akul. Vanha was better at sensing things, while Shosmi bested them both with her lightsaber.

The weeks turned into months, and the months into years. They trained hard, learning history and combat, readying to become full Jedi one day.

Master Skywalker entered their room one day about two years after Maki joined them, as they were talking and laughing together. He stood unnoticed in the doorway for a few minutes, watching them, a slight smile on his face. He was glad the young people were friends; each needed a good friend after what they had all been through.

Vanha noticed him first, standing up.

“Hello Master Skywalker,” she said, smiling.

Luke smiled back.

“Come with me,” he said.

The three Younglings exchanged glances, and followed the Jedi.

He led them into a small room, in a part of the Temple they had never been to before. It was small, and only had a few furnishings. A chest was on the wall opposite the door, and on either wall were shelves covered in spare parts.

Opening the chest, he pulled out three small crystals. Then he pulled three shells of lightsaber handles off the wall.

“Here,” Luke said, handing them to the Younglings. “Have one each, you’ll have to finish them though.”

Vanha took them carefully, examining the crystals and handle. One day soon, it would become a powerful weapon.

“Thank you,” she said.

“All the spare parts you need are in here, make it as you want,” Master Skywalker said.

Soon, laded with spare parts, the three of them made their way back to their room. About half way there, a loud crash startled them. Vanha jumped, dropping a few screws. Sighing, she bent to pick them up. As she did, she heard Ben Solo shouting angrily.

“It’s a waste of time! I don’t care what you think! I don’t care what she thinks! I can do as I want!” Another crash, sounding like something was broken, came from the room in front of them.

“Ben –,” she heard Captain Solo begin. He and Chewbacca had come for a visit the day before. Vanha suspected to try and bring Ben home.

“No!” Ben shouted, and it sounded like he punched the wall. “I can do what I want! I don’t need you and Mother staring down the back of my neck all day!” Another crash followed, and the door was flung open.

Ben stormed out, angrily slamming the door behind him. It bounced back open, but he ignored it, punching the wall near and stormed off.

Vanha glanced after him, exchanging glancing with her friends. Ben, now fifteen years old, had a quick temper.

The continued on, more subdued. Vanha glanced into the room, and caught sight of Captain Solo sitting at a table, his head in his hands. Chewbacca was gently patting his back.

“What did we do wrong, Chewwie?” she heard him mutter.

She followed her friends, worried.

Chapter six

Postby Woogwoo Wren » Fri Jan 15, 2016 8:21 pm

On Vanha’s twelfth birthday, things changed. The three of them were sent on their first field mission, a simple on, but a mission on the less. They would be watched by an older Padawan at all times, but left mostly to themselves.

Briz, now seventeen, was to accompany them. They were to find a missing Youngling, a boy who had vanished a few days ago. Luke was sure that he couldn’t have gone far, but warned them to be careful. He was one of the younger Padawan, about ten.

So, on the morning of the day she turned twelve, Vanha left the temple, Maki, Shosmi and Briz with her.

Maki was the first to find the trail, a broken twig here, a piece of fabric there.

“I’ve done a bit of tracking before,” he said. “You know, back home….” He sighed, and walked ahead.

Vanha and Shosmi exchanged glances. Maki didn’t talk about his past much, but they had gathered that his parents had been killed by the Akul that had nearly killed him, and he felt a little guilty that he had survived when they hadn’t.

They travelled in silence, only pointing out bits of the trail here and there. The woods was quiet, broken only by bird song now and then. Vanha found herself enjoying the trip, after so long of living only near the Temple.

They stopped for lunch by a small stream, and continued on. By night fall, Briz told them that they had caught up with the boy, but were still about a day or so behind him.

They made camp in a small clearing in the trees, long grass making comfortable bedding.

Vanha woke in the night, and froze; something had woken her. She lay quietly, and listened, her breathing slow. There it was again, something was crashing through the trees. As she listened, it began to grow louder.

She reached for her lightsaber, and felt safer touching the hilt. She had finally added the finishing touches to it a few months before, but it had been in working order for about a year and a half.

Turning her attention to the noise again, she realized it was even louder. Worried, she sat up, and saw Shosmi doing the same. They glanced at each other, and then towards where the sound was coming from.

Suddenly, Briz was there, a finger to his lips. He looked nervous, and a little scared.

“Stay quiet,” he hissed. “Rancor.”

Vanha’s eye grew wide, she had only heard of Rancor’s before. Why one would be on Yaven, she had no idea.

Shosmi opened her mouth to say something, but Briz shook his head. They stayed silent, waiting as the nose came closer.

Just as Vanha was sure it was on top of them, she could almost see the trees moving, the creature turned, and began to move away.

She realised a breath that she didn’t know she was holding, and head Shosmi and Briz doing the same.

Suddenly, Maki sat bolt up right.

“Wassa matter?” he all but shouted. Briz winched, slamming a hand over the boy’s mouth.

“Shut up,” he whispered. “There’s a Rancor out there!”

Maki’s eye grew wide, and he nodded under the zabrak’s hand. Briz nodded back, and moved his hand.

But the damage was done. The crashing stopped, and then began again. This time it was coming straight for them.

It threw down a tree, entering the clearing. As it did, Briz grabbed his lightsaber, igniting the blue blade.

“Run!” he shouted, his voice shaking a little, showing how scared he was. “Tell Master Skywalker!”

The three Younglings looked at each other, and Maki shook his head.

“I’m staying to help!” he said, grabbing his own lightsaber.

“No! Go now!” Briz shouted, and ducked under the Rancor’s attack. He sliced at it, but it blocked the strike with its arm, roaring in pain as the blade sliced of a finger.

Shosmi started running, and Vanha did as well, grabbing Maki by the shoulder. She didn’t want to leave Briz, but he should be able to take care of himself.

Then disaster struck; the Rancor managed to bat Briz into a tree. He slammed against it, and lay there, unconscious

The Rancor roared in victory, and moved towards the zabrak, ready to finish him.

Maki shrugged Vanha’s hand off his shoulder, and grabbing his lightsaber, turning it on. He shouted, getting the creature’s attention.

Scowling, Vanha turned on her own weapon, moving forward to help her friend.

Maki rushed forward, the blue glow from his lightsaber casting a weird light on his face.

He shouted again, and the Rancor moved forward, swiping a hand at him. He leaped back, and Vanha rushed forward, ducking under the Rancor’s arm. She sliced up at it, and felt her lightsaber cut through something. Then something hit her, and she was send flying.

She landed on the ground, and lay there, winded, her check on the dirt. Her friends were attacking the Rancor, but as she watched, it picked Shosmi up.

She struggled to her feet, and walked forward, still gasping for breath. Her lightsaber, which had been knocked from her hand, lay a few feet away from her, and she reached out to it, trying to pull it to her with the Force.

It didn’t move, but even as she tried to move it, she had an idea. Maki, who was dodging the Rancor, unable to save Shosmi and defend himself with only one lightsaber, was unable to help Shosmi. But if he had another lightsaber.

“Maki!” Vanha managed to shout, pointing to her lightsaber. He nodded, and reached for it. It flew into his hand, and he rushed at the Rancor, slicing off the hand that was holding Shosmi.

The twi’lek took another deep breath, and rushed forward, recovered. Shosmi landed on her feet, and grabbed her lightsaber. Maki grinned at Vanha, tossing her the lightsaber.

“Good idea,” he said. Vanha flashed a grin back, and turned her attention to the Rancor.

Together, the three of the advanced, moving towards the creature.

It roared, and rushed towards them, but the spilt, Vanha left, Shosmi right, and Maki straight. Vanha shouted as she rushed, her green blade cutting through the Rancor’s leg almost to easily.

The Rancor roared, but fell, landing with a thud. Maki leaped back, as it nearly landed on him.

He raised his lightsaber, brining it down onto the creature’s head. It lay still.

Vanha shuddered; she guessed that was where the missing Youngling had gone. They had nearly followed his fate.

Shosmi smile, a small smile.

“Well. We did it,” she whispered. Vanha nodded, and glanced over at Briz. He was beginning to wake, groaning and holding his head.

“What?” he muttered, looking at the dead Rancor and the three Younglings, covered in blood and scratches, but still very much alive.

Maki grinned.

“Didcha not think we could take a puny Rancor?” he asked. Briz just shook his head, winching.

“I think you have a story to tell,” he muttered, struggling to his feet.

Vanha felt a smile break over her face. There were questions, sure. Like why there was a Rancor on Yaven anyway, but she didn’t care. They were alive.

“Happy birthday, Maki!” Vanha cried, tackling the young togruta in a hug. Maki grinned, returning the embrace. Shosmi smiled, watching her two friends.

It was Maki’s sixteenth birthday, nearly three years after the rancor fight. During that time, Maki and Vanha had grown close, though they still spent as much time with Shosmi. She didn’t care, instead trying to be noticed by Ben Solo.

The human was somewhat excited, for he was coming back that day. He had left the planet about a month before, no one knew why. Many people though that he had finally been persuade to visit his family, but Vanha wasn’t sure.

About an hour later, once Maki had opened his gift, a shout came from outside.

“Ship in coming!”

Slowly, the Padawans began to leave the temple, heading out to the landing bay to see it.

Vanha rose to leave, but Maki laid a hand on her arm.

“Wait,” he said. Once the room had been emptied, he smiled, and reacted into his robe.

“Here,” he said, handing her a headband. It was made of golden material, firm and strong, but flexible. In the centre, a small piece of gold lay, backed with cloth.

“Its for you, put it on,” Maki said.

Vanha grinned, and put it on. It fit perfectly, and was very comfortable.

“Thank you Maki,” she said, smiling.

He grinned, and glanced down, fiddling with his Padawan braid as he did when he was embarrassed.

“I hope you like it,” he said.

“I love it! Its amazing!” Vanha cried, looking around for a mirror. Maki, having foreseen the want, produced one from inside his robe.

Holding it up to her face, Vanha grinned.

“Its amazing!” She leaned forward and pecked him on the cheek. He blushed, and turned to her.

“Vanha, I –,” he was interrupted by a scream. The Padawans glanced at each other and stood, running towards the sound.

Outside was chaos. People were running everywhere, lightsabers where lit, and people screamed.

But it was what was in the centre that shocked them the most. A ship had landed, and in front of it stood a man, dressed in black robes, a lightsaber in his had. It’s blade was red, and at the end of the handle, where the blade started, a cross guard of red blade jutted out.

A body lay beside him, obviously dead. Briz, his blue lightsaber lying near him. The zabrak would have tried to fight the sith, but lost.

Vanha’s gaze rested on the face of the young sith, and she gasped. There, his face covered with a scowl, his face framed by his black hair and a hood, was Ben Solo.

[The darkside rises] A starwars fan fiction.

Vanha stared at the man, shocked to see that Ben could turn to the dark side. Sure he had been more angry then usual lately, but to become a sith?

“Ben!” Vanha heard a familiar voice shout. She turned to see Shosmi rushing towards him, her red hair flowing out behind her and her eye filled with tears. “Ben stop!” she shouted.

“Shosmi!” Vanha cried, moving towards her friend.

“Vanha, come on,” Maki hissed, grabbing her arm. “Its to dangerous, he’ll kill you!” Vanha shook her head, watching helplessly as Shosmi rushed towards Ben.

“He’ll kill her,” she whispered. “I can’t let that happen!” She pulled her arm out of his grasp, and started running again.

“Vanha! Stop, please!” Maki shouted. He caught up with her and grabbed her arm again. His usually cheerful and mischievous eyes were damp with tears. “Please Vanha. Shosmi is smart, she will survive.”

Vanha hesitated, looking back to her friend who had just reached Ben. Then she nodded.

“Fine,” she whispered, turning and rushing off. Maki followed, his hand on his lightsaber.

The two young Padawans moved away from the Temple, rushing towards the forest nearby.

They rushed into the trees, glancing over their shoulders every now and then. Heading towards a small tree they had found when they were younger, the two young people rushed nimbly through the forest.

The tree was hollow; Vanha, Maki and Shosmi had found it five years ago. They used it as a clubhouse, but recently hadn’t been in it often.

Maki pulled open the small bark door he had made, and ushered Vanha inside. They both sat, huddled together, fearing for their friends and lives.

For what seemed an eternity, they hid, hearing screams every now and then. Vanha kept expected Shosmi to rush into the hiding place, but her friend didn’t show up.

There had been silence for nearly half an hour when Vanha heard footsteps crunching on the fallen leaves. She held her breath, closing her eyes and praying that is was Shosmi.

The footsteps were slow, and it seemed the owner was looking for something. Suddenly, a red lightsaber cut into the tree, nearly slicing Vanha’s forehead off. She yelped, looking up to see Ben looking down at her. He had donned a helmet; covering his face and making him look more menacing.

Maki acted quickly, pulling out his lightsaber and pushing himself towards Ben. The older jedi simply blocked Maki’s attack, slicing down in an attempt to cut his head off.

Vanha pulled out her lightsaber, leaping up and crossing blades with Ben. He was stronger then she expected, and she was shoved back into the tree. But she had distracted him enough to give Maki time to leap out of the trunk. She quickly followed and the two of them faced their old companion.

“Why Ben?” Vanha asked, glaring at him.

“My name is not Ben!” he shouted, “I’m Kylo Ren!”

“You were Ben,” Maki said. “What made you change?”

“My father is weak, so are you all. The dark side is much more powerful. I will follow in my grandfather’s footsteps.”

His grandfather. Liea Organo Solo’s father. Darth Vader. But from what Vanha had heard from Master Skywalker, Vader had changed in the end. Perhaps Ben didn’t know that.

“Your father is one of the strongest men I know!” Vanha shouted, becoming angry.

Ben laughed, a harsh laugh.

“Enough talk,” he snapped, bringing his lightsaber down. “He is a disappointment!”

Maki and Vanha ducked to each side, dodging the downward striking lightsaber. Ben scowled, and suddenly turned to Vanha, holding out his hand. She was suddenly immobilised, unable to move.

The young twi’lek was forced to watch as Kylo advanced Maki, brining down strike after strike onto the young togrua. Suddenly, the sith got through Maki’s defences, grazing his side. The togrua darted back, fear in his eyes.

“Maki!” Vanha shouted, tears streaming down her face. He looked at her, and as he did Kylo’s lightsaber slipped under his.

Maki smiled once, then the red blade sliced through his belly.

“NO!” Vanha shouted, anger replacing her shock. “You killed him!” she cried as his limp body dropped to the ground. “You will pay for that! I’ll kill you!” Vanha screamed, fighting against her invisible bonds.

“You have anger. Good,” Kylo muttered, moving towards her. “The Supreme Leader will not pass another apprentice down.”

“I will not work with you!” Vanha hissed, glaring into her eyes. Her sadness had been completely replaced with anger, and all she could think of was how to kill him.

“You will one day,” Ben said, releasing his hold on her. She dropped to the ground, grabbed her lightsaber and attacked, aiming a blow at his head.

He turned, catching her in his force grasp and immobilizing her again. He shook his head, and leaned in close to her.

“I will let you live. But only because I feel you have potential.” And with that, he moved his hand, knocking her out.

She fell to the ground, limp, the sole survivor of the attack. Only Master Skywalker had survived, being off planet at the time.

Chapter Nine

Postby Woogwoo Wren » Sat Mar 19, 2016 2:29 pm

A ship dropped out of orbit, the sight of Yaven making the pilot sigh.

“What am I doing here again?” he muttered, taking his feet off the control panel – careful not to bump any controls – and sat up. A small droid, a BB unit, BB-3, that he has stolen from its malefactors a year ago buzzed quietly.

“Yeah, I know why, something about a rancour being left on planet, but why am I here?” he sighed, throwing his arms in the air. The droid buzzed again, and he sighed.

“I guess, but money isn’t as important as my life. I mean, that’s a rancour!” He spun in his chair, turning to face the droid. “You’ve never seen any, but I have. I grew up on the same ball of sand that they come from.” He scowled, turning back to the window.

“Well, let’s get this over with.” Spotting a likely place to land, he began to prepare the ship for landing. As it spun, slowly becoming horizontal, the cockpit spun as well, keeping him upright.

Once it can to a stop, the pilot climbed down, joining his droid on the floor of the ship. Giving it an absent pat on its head, he quickly dressed into his battered mandolorian armour. It wasn’t originally his, neither was the ship. They belonged to his mentor, Boba Fett, but had been passed down to him.

Taking his blaster, for even though his job was to only observe the rancour, to see how well it was surviving on Yaven, he wanted to be sure.

Then he opened the back, and looked out into the woods. Sighing, he stepped out, scanning the forest through his helmet. BB-3 rolled after him, buzzing and beeping softly.

“No, you can’t come with me,” Jeb said, turning back. “Its way to dangerous here, watch the ship.”

The droid bleeped mournfully, slowly rolling back into the ship. Once the door was up, and the droid safely inside, Jeb activated his jetpack, flying into the air and over the trees.

He saw nothing for a long time, flying for hours over the forest. Shuffles of small animals, and cries of birds were the only sound. The mercenary began to grow bored, hoping that he would soon see a sign of the rancour, if only for something to happen.

Suddenly, the trees stopped. It happened suddenly, and stopped in surprise, hovering over the large, empty piece of land that look surprisingly like a landing bay.

Interested, he dropped down, landing on the platform. It was flat to the ground, and in a large clearing. To the north, a small cluster of buildings lay.

Confused, Jeb began to move towards it, his blaster at the ready. He soon made it to the buildings, and what he saw made him grip the blaster all the more. There was one large one and a few smaller one around, seeming to be barracks.

But it wasn’t that which had made him nervous. In front of the building lay bodies, dead people. He stepped back in shock, before moving forward. Questions began rushing through him mind, who were they? What were they doing on Yaven IV? No one lived here, that was why those who hired him had let the rancour lose there four years ago. But most importantly, how had they died? Was whatever killed them still around?

They seemed to have been killed recently, only just before he had arrived on the planet, just this morning. And they didn’t seem to be killed by a rancour.

He scanned the bodies, making sure that no one was alive, and began a search of the settlement. It seemed to be well established, having been here for a few years. A faint memory came back, something about a new Jedi temple to train more jedi. But he hadn’t paid it much heed, and didn’t know much about it.

A quick examine revealed that there was no one living in the settlement, if something as advance as this could be called a settlement. Jeb had also decided that this was a jedi training facility, due to the high number of lightsabers.

He had never seen one before, but after examination, and nearly cutting off an arm with the blue blade that had leaped out of the hilt, he decided that these were indeed the weapons the jedi used.

Still wanting answers, he began to search the forest, thinking that someone would have escaped. As he moved out, he did see a few bodies, not as many as in the main settlement, but some. Coming up with nothing, he began to do a fly over, scanning the near forest with a heat scanner.

Finally he found something. The heat tracker had located something larger than any small animal that would live in the forest. Slowly flying down, he landed in the woods and surveyed the scene.

The trees were scared with char marks, and one was even cut in half, its hollow inside showing the small play house of children.

The leaves were tossed about, showing signs of a fight. Adding to this were the two figures. One was a young togruta, a male, cut nearly in half by some strange weapon. It seemed to have been cauterized, no blood coming from the large wound, and none staining the leaves around.

Leaning over him, soft sobs coming from her body, was a twi’lek. Her back was towards him, and her shoulders were racked with sobs.

He hesitated, before moving forward, making sure to stand on some dry leaves to as not to startle her.

She spun, her hand moving to the metal cylinder that hung from her belt. She hesitated, her hand still on the lightsaber.

“W-who are you?” she asked, her voice a little shaky. “Where are you fro-om?”

“Hey, easy there kid,” Jeb said, taking his helmet off and laying aside his blaster. “I ain’t gonna hurt yah.”

She narrowed her eyes, standing from the crouch she was in.

“What are you doing here? Are you in league with Kylo Ren?”

“Kylo – who? I was sent here ta track down a rancour. It was planted ‘ere a few years ago, my employers wanted ta see how well it survived.”

The girl frowned, her hand moving away from the weapon.

“A rancour? Yeah, we fought one a few years ago. Killed it too.” She looked him in the eyes, and Jeb could see a deep sadness.

“You killed it? Alone?” He was surprised, the only person he had heard of that had killed a rancour on his own was Luke Skywalker, the famed Jedi. But the twi’lek shook her head.

“I had friends. Shosmi and –,” she glanced down at the dead togruta, and whispered, “And Maki.”

Suddenly, she looked up, a light of hope in her eyes.

“Shosmi is alright, right? She’s alive?” she asked, almost begging him to tell her that she was, that her friend was alive. Jeb bit his lip, not wanting to distress the girl, but he wanted to lie even less.

“I haven’t seen any one – livin’ that is. She could of run into the woods.”

She sighed, looking at the leaves between her feet again.

“I need to find her,” she said, after a pause. Then she began walking, picking up speed until she was running towards the buildings.

~*~

Vanha ran through the woods, leaving the strange man behind. She didn’t know who he was, but she didn’t care at the moment. Shosmi had to be alive, she had to be!

Tears blurred her vision as she remembered waking up, alone in the woods, Maki lying dead beside her. Then came the anger, the burning anger against Kylo Ren, against those who had killed him. Then the grief, and with that weariness. She had just stopped, throwing herself over her friend and crying.

Then the stranger came, gallivanting her into action and reminding her of her best friend, Shosmi. Guilt gnawed at her as she ran, guilt for leaving her friend in the time of her need. If Shosmi wasn’t alive, it was all her fault.

She reached the temple. Not slowing, and barley aware of a voice calling her to stop, to answer his stupid questions about a long dead rancour, she rushed around the building, stopping at last in front of the temple doors.

Bodies lay in front of it, all dead. Vanha could hardly bring herself to move closer, could hardly bring herself to search them, to find Shosmi.

Slowly she stepped forward, over a body. She looked over them, hoping, praying, wishing that her friend wouldn’t be here. But her hopes were in vain.

Shosmi lay there, her red hair thrown over her face. She was dead.

Vanha stared at her, feeling nothing. She was drained, emotionally and physically, and there were no more tears to spend. She just stood there, looking down at her best friend, hopelessness and dispar threatening to overwhelm her.

Suddenly, she snapped. All the emotions she had felt over the last few hour came to a head, and she screamed. Throwing back her head, she screamed, over and over again, letting all her fear out. And replacing that fear, anger came.

“I’ll kill him,” she whispered. “I will kill Kylo Ren.” Raising her voice, she shouted, “If you hear me! The next time I see you; it will be your last! Do you hear me!” she screamed.

Suddenly, she felt enclosed. With so much death around her, she felt sick. And so she ran, leaving the bodies behind, pushing her way through the trees. She ran blindly, nothing in her mind, only a burning anger, hate even.

She wasn’t aware of anything expect for the hate, and she ran. Needing to get away from her memories, from her hate. Until finally, she could run no more. She just dropped, laying where she fell, tears seeping from her eyes.

And then she slept. Overwhelmed by the events of the past day, she slept. The hate fear, anger, rage and grief was washed away by weariness, and she slept.
