"Well, just watch out a little more. Unless you'd like your warrior name to be Boapatch." he teased gently. "But I doubt you'll make that mistake again if you've got your mind on it. Plenty of smart warriors have gotten stuck before. Just remember, you can either leave your mind in the thorn bush with your dignity, or you can learn. Now go on." He waved his tail to tell her to keep hunting before turning and vanishing into the undergrowth.

"Have warriors ever fallen chasing squirrels up trees?" Dawnpaw had chosen her question carefully from the million new ones that were popping up, though she felt like she was starting to flood with curiosity. She bit her lip to hold back her other questions until Spiritfire answered, though she really, really wanted to know everything about everything and was certain Spiritfire knew it all.

"Well done." Shadowpatch added. "I told you, every cat's a hunter at heart. You have the makings of a fine warrior. And don't be discouraged if you're clumsy or weak- that's what training is for. It's practice so that everything you do when you're grown up is easier." He brushed his tail along Sweetkit's back, not without some small measure of pride in the kit. Careful, he told himself, or you might end up accidentally calling her Boapaw. He withheld a shudder at the thought.

Boapaw nodded and stalked off to find another bird. It took her a while to find one that wasn't up in a tree. When she did, she dropped into the crouch Eagleheart had shown her. She scanned the area for thorn bushes and bramble thickets, once she was sure there was none she stalked the bird. Belly low to the ground, tail flicking slightly she pulled herself silently and smoothly across the earth until she was in range. With a well aimed leap she landed squarely on the bird and dispatched it with a bite before it could make a noise. Boapaw breathed a sigh of relief.

Spiritfire nodded. "Crystalheart told me about when she and Tauntedwhisper were apprentices. One day he was hunting a squirrel, chased it up a tree. He lost his balance and fell straight into a puddle!" Spiritfire's heart sank a little. He'd never met his father but he had heard that the tom died a heroic death protecting Lovepaw from Bluestorm and Twistedheart. He felt sorry for his younger brothers and sister, he knew what it was like growing up without a dad. He remembered when his mother had told him and his littermates that Tauntedwhisper had granted her another litter from StarClan.

Eagleheart purred softly as Boapaw caught her bird, relieved that she didn't seem to be beating herself up. In the meantime, he watched her style to see if it looked more like his or Dragonsong's or even Monsterclaw's. If she was part of that family, there was a chance she was being trained by a Bright, as he knew Monsterclaw had been. Dragonsong's style had always reminded him of her father's- though he didn't know she had been trained by him. He suspected that it might run in the family, or something, he wasn't sure. But he couldn't help wondering when Boapaw did something that reminded him of Dragonsong.

Dawnpaw burst out laughing. "S-sorry." she mewed, still chortling. "But she fell down and got soaked. Oh, she must have felt terrible." At this thought her laughter cooled into thoughtful silence. "Did you ever meet Tauntedwhisper? I know he was dead by the time Boapaw, Lichenpaw, Dewpaw, and Tauntedpaw were born, but you're older than them..." She trailed off, her thoughts turning to her own faint, vague memories of a mother and a brother.

Ambergaze dipped her head in gratitude, taking a bite of her prey and scanning the camp for something to do now that her paw was "injured".

Boapaw flicked her ears and twitched her whiskers in the way Dragonsong did. She buried the bird. Hopefully I can catch another. She licked her lips and stalked off again, her graceful movements reminiscent of Shadowpatch and Dragonsong. She skulked through the forest, her shoulders and head held proudly like her true father. After a while she found another pigeon which was pecking away at the grass ahead. Boapaw fell into the bird hunting position. She crawled up so that she was close enough to jump. She leaped into the air. There was a rush of brown and black and suddenly Boapaw was on the ground buried under something heavy. She kicked upwards with her back paws, sending the creature sprawling. She drew herself instantly to her feet, her fur fluffed, ready to fight.

Leafwhisp got to his paws, hi stomach hurting a little from where Boapaw had kicked him off. "Oh, oh Boapaw! I'm so sorry!" he apologized. "I-I didn't see you..." He trailed off, getting lost in the flaming pools of amber that were Boapaw's eyes. Can it be? Are the rumours true? Is Boapaw my sister?! He would never have suspected that Shadowpatch was in fact the she-cat's father.

Eagleheart's observations only drove him more crazy with uncertainty. She just doesn't look or act like Crystalheart's or Tauntedwhisper's kit, he thought. Then again, maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see when I look at- he heard a scuffle and raced around the bush he'd been hiding behind, claws extended and hackles raised, though he quickly relaxed when he saw it was only Leafwhisp. "Hello Leafwhisp. What are you up to right now?" He automatically pushed away reminiscences of when he had met the tiny Leafkit, as they were too painful. He missed Dreamdust and Lostkit every day, but though the memories were still clear to him, he was getting better at choosing to think about other things.

Shadowpatch controlled his urge to chuckle, instead restricting himself to a smile. "Sweetkit, do you know where mice live when they're alive? They live in burrows, made of dirt, and they run around on the dirt their whole lives just like us. A little extra pummeling won't do the mouse any harm, nor will I get sick when I eat it. It's just a little bit bruised after being so valiantly caught, twice." To show her his confidence, he crouched down at last to eat his meal, even hungrier now than when he'd come over to ring Ravenwing prey in the first place.

Boapaw forced her fur to lie flat, an annoyed look on her face. "He was hunting the same bird as me and he landed on me!" she told Eagleheart.

"Y-yeah. I didn't know she was hunting it too. And I leaped and crashed into her," Leafwhisp explained. He was a scrawny dark cat who bore no resemblance to his mother Dragonsong.

Spiritfire shook his head. "No. I didn't."

Kinktail slunk over, deciding that she could have a little fun at Ambergaze's expense. "Hey Amberkit. How's the mighty warrior who needs all her food brought to her?" She hissed maliciously, 'accidentally' stepping on the warrior's meal. "Oh, oops," she said, wiping her paw on what was left of the rodent's fur.

Eagleheart sighed, his tail flicking back and forth. "Well, then, shall we just keep hunting in different directions? That way we won't crash into each other again." He looked at Leafwhisp again. "I take it Oddpaw's got another assignment this morning?" He added conversationally. He was none of Leafwhisp's kin, but he knew Dawnpaw had always admired him, and he'd been present for some part of Leafwhisp's kithood, so he felt a tiny bit parental or perhaps fraternal toward Leafwhisp. And now that he looked at Leafwhisp and Boapaw together, he could see very little resemblance, though he supposed it was possible that Dragonsong had had more than one mate. Even so.

Dawnpaw nodded. "I didn't get to meet my mother either." She added, brushing against her mentor. "But it's not so bad, I guess. We have our health, and friends, and some family left. I have my dad, you have your mom and all those siblings of yours."

Ambergaze gasped as Kinktail stepped on her prey, making it inedible. She lowered her ears, acting exactly as the Shadow wanted her to. Looking down, she murmured. "I wasn't hungry. I'm sorry for wasting prey." Her voice cracked halfway through her sentence.
