That was my life before turning into what I am now. Sometimes I miss living the simple life of a boy on Earth... But mostly I don't, and I accept who and what I am. So, how does a boy like me become one of the highest angels in heaven? I'm still not exactly sure to this day. I used to think that God was using me as a test or an example of what happens when a human becomes a strong angel. Now though, I'm still not sure to this day. I usually push that to the back of my mind though and let it pile up with the rest of the stuff I don't want to think about right now...
Mason's bright eyes fluttered open and he instantly threw his arm over his eyes. "Aargh! What is that?" Mason moaned at the bright light. "Am I dead?" He asked himself before he looked around. He was still at the military and was very confused. "Why are they looking at me like that? Hellooo?" Mason waved his arms around and even made a few funny faces at them before he noticed that he was taller than them. A stairway slowly made itself present as it came down towards him. "What?" Mason was getting a bit dizzy and his head was pounding very loudly. He quickly looked down to try to relax but his jaw dropped wide open and the pain in his head got worse. "I-I'm... Dead?" He squeaked.
He felt someone's hand rest on his shoulder. "There, there child." The beautiful and motherly voice sang to him. "Do not grieve, for it is done. A better life awaits you up the stairwell." Mason turned around and as a blurry figure disappeared into thin air. "Wait!" Mason cried out, but it was too late. Sighing, the boy stuffed his hands in his pockets and slowly walked up the long stairwell, not knowing what to expect.
People have always asked me, "What is it like in heaven, Mason?" I used to be unable to come up with an accurate answer for this, but after half of a century I finally came up with the perfect way to describe it. It isn't exactly the fluffy clouded kingdom that you would expect to see. In fact, Heaven is quite divided. Most of it is for the people though to make their own world and fantasy up with their other loved ones. The other.. Smaller sections are for us angels and from there it is a pyramid of symbolizing jobs and power. I'll admit, it's all too confusing for me to explain but I'll say that it isn't what you would expect. Yes, there were rules and guidelines and yes, there were punishments, not to the people, but to the angels. I now see it as an illusion.. And see that somebody's research on the angels were a bit off. Humans do make mistakes though but something that the angels really lacked was freedom and empathy. They also never made a mistake! I guess that was something I didn't clearly see when I spent my time up there...
Mason finally got up the steps and was panting as some giant doors in front of him opened up. Instantly he felt his tears from when he had died literally burn into little black tear-stains on his face for a moment before the pain went away. Suddenly A large angel flew up to him. "Mason is it?" The angel didn't wait for him to answer though. "Today's your lucky day! Come with me and don't get lost!" The angel suddenly was zooming off and Mason was running as fast as his legs could go just to keep the angel in sight. "Please.. Slow down! " Mason was gasping for air at this point and was wishing that he could go as fast as lightning. Just as he thought that, he was right beside the angel running as quick as him. Mason's eyes widened. "Great! You're already a pro in heaven haha! Come now! The boss wants to see you!" The energetic angel suddenly stopped and Mason ran straight into some heavy doors. Surprisingly enough, he didn't feel any pain. "Bet you don't miss pain, right?" The angel laughed before opening the door back up. "Well, I've gotta go send more messages out to people! I'll keep ya in touch kiddo and see how you're holding up." The angel winked at Mason before he was off again.
"Come in." A business-like voice sounded in the room. "I don't have all day to do this." Mason did as the angel said and slowly creeped into the room. "How did I run like lightning? Why don't I feel pain? What am I doing here? What's going-" Mason's questions were cut off by the angel turning around in his spinning chair and facing him. He had 9 large and powerful wings and he looked very serious. "I don't have time for your childish questions. You'll learn as you go around most of the parts of Heaven." The angel suppressed a quiet sigh. "Why He chose you, what He saw in you.. I have no clue." The powerful angel said as he shook his head. Mason frowned at him. "What?" He seemed to be using that word a lot recently. "Nothing." The angel said as he made a bright portal. "Hop in." He said as he gestured Mason towards the bright portal. "What does this do though? Can we slow this down?" Mason asked as he looked down it, uncertain if this was a wise thing to do. "No. We don't have time." The angel said as he pushed him into the portal.
It was the strangest thing I swear.. I didn't even feel any pain when I fell through that portal. It ended up literally being a loophole back to that office though. It wasn't like in those weird romance novels and it wasn't like some "holy" ritual at all. When I came back, though, my life had gotten so much more complicated.. I remember landing on my butt with 6 large-ass wings fluttering around everywhere. The strangest part of this though? I felt like they were a part of me. I had also gotten a silvery-gold halo, too. Apparently those have different colors according to "rank" is what they call them. I had a blue robe. It was exactly the color of my hoodie on earth, too, so it didn't make me feel that weird to wear a hoodie. After I had been "turned" into an angel, I had a ton of responsibilities. I was constantly zipping around checking in on everyone and all of this progress they were making while overseeing earth. Yes, earth. I had thought that I was finally away from that wretched place, but apparently they needed someone to watch it to see how the humans were doing. They needed someone who had experience with them and knew how they felt in order to produce ideas to help improve society down there. I had a really big responsibility on my shoulders.. But the idea finally came to me.
Mason zipped through the place quite quickly, or by now he and his wings had become one and he was much faster than the average angel since he had 3 sets of wings helping him out. Mason opened up the familiar doors and landed on the ground. The business angel looked up at him and was glaring at him a bit. “Mason. What are you doing here? I’m busy!” He said as he kept going through some papers. “Guardian angels.” Mason said a bit excitedly. “Guardian what?” He had the angel’s attention now. “Some of us can could down on earth disguised…” Mason explained. “And watch over those who we know would cause terror and hardship for everyone else. If we were constantly there then we could stop them whenever these events would occur.” Mason said as he searched the angel’s eyes for anything. They seemed quite concerned and thinking heavily. Mason recognized that look- it was the look of an angel whenever they were in contact with the big boss. Yes, that one. Though nobody has
ever met him, only this angel can talk to him telepathically. The angel blinked for a moment then turned to him. “Go. Set them up… And Mason?” He said as he stood up and made Mason look like a little angel next to him. “What?” Mason said as he looked up at the gigantic angel. “The boss wants you to go down, too. He wants you to be able to tell more of the angels how the job is done by the person overseeing all of this.” He said and snapped his fingers.
Usually when he snaps his fingers like that you appear outside of his doors, for he doesn’t really like others to visit him too long. But when he snapped his fingers at me.. I was falling to Earth! I hadn’t even had a chance to gather the angels that I wanted… To properly explain to them what their job was and how important it was to not screw up. I was drawing a lot of attention from the humans as well, for it was pitch black and I was a shooting comet with my 6 wings glows fiercely, making me look like some disorientated ball of fire. I had to disappear somehow or else my cover would be blown.
I still don’t know how to this day that I knew where I was going, but I just felt that I was going into a little girl’s house. I quickly remember the types of things my sister liked- or at least dreamed about having whenever I took care of her. She was like most girls. She liked clothes, and getting her hair done, and playing with the tooth fairy… That’s when it came to me! She had her favorite doll that she carried around with her everywhere. It would be the perfect decoy… I would be able to constantly watch her as her guardian angel without the girl even knowing it! And so, as I fell, I transformed myself into a doll. I made myself look like any other normal doll, actually.. For I remember loathing going to church, as I think most children around this girl’s age did and would grow bored to see an angel doll staring at her. Instead I chose my outfit I had always worn before going into the army. My lucky blue hoodie, my really old and worn out jeans, and my huge boots my dad had bought for me that were too big when I was 7 years old. The only thing that really stuck out was my charred tears and of course, my wings. But those refused to leave me and I thought that the girl would love to have a flying doll of some sort.
As Mason fell down onto earth, it was as if fate had chosen it to be that exact moment that the little girl was walking outside to go stargaze with her new telescope she had gotten. She carefully set it up and focused it on the bright light that was heading straight towards her. The little girl was frozen in horror and with a transfixed look of pure interest as the ball of light crashed down beside her. Mason was now considered lifeless except for his consciousness. So when the girl went over and picked him up, he prayed that she would like him so that way he could watch this girl… For whatever reason he was assigned to her. Mason didn’t even know what bad thing she would do in the future or when.. But he knew he was going to be there for her and keep an eye out for her.
It had been a success, though. The girl squealed and hugged Mason tightly as she spun around. “You just fell out of the sky! For me! I knew it!!!” She was excitedly running into her house and up the stairs.
“I wished… I wished for a new companion for my birthday today and you just CAME! And oh, you’re so gorgeous too! You’re like that one angel dude my older sister loves to read about… You know? Those sexy fallen angels who fall in love with a mortal?” Mason absolutely had no idea what she was going on about. He actually realized he had no clue what time period he was in, but he knew it was a strange one because there was a blinking clock, a lot of lights, and an actual heater along with a lot more weird inventions he had missed out on while being in heaven. So when she went on and on about these teenage novels he just felt confused but simply sat there and listened to the girl go on and on for hours. “Mom! Dad! Sis! Look!” The girl said as she hugged Mason and showed him off. “He fell from the sky and he’s my best friend!” Of course, nobody believed her but the girl didn’t care. She loved Mason so much and made her older sister jealous that she was beyond pleased with her gift.
Oddly enough, the girl never gave me a name like most girls did. She just referred to me as “the most beautiful doll,” but when she was directly talking to me, I found that she sometimes called me “Blondie…” I assumed that she nicknamed me this because of my dirty-blonde hair but I wasn’t so sure.
For the first few months, I think it was… She was completely normal. I had found out her name was Selena, she was an A-B honor roll. Whatever that was. She loved reading books, especially about the paranormal. Sometimes she would let me read the books, too, and I enjoyed them greatly and longed to read more but couldn’t because I had to watch out for her. After a while we had grown close together though….. Until I noticed something horrible.
I couldn’t believe that I didn’t notice that thing when I first came in, but I did somewhat believe that they were fake. Even if they were real, how the bloody hell was I supposed to know what it was?! It started when she came home one night all upset. She had been having a bad “school” day, I assumed it was a place she went to get her “grades” or whatever they were. I think that some of her friends had been bullying her or something, but nevertheless I saw it. There was a dark shape at the door that was watching her. At first I thought it was her shadow being projected from a long distance before I FELT it. The dark aura that was drifting into the room after both me and Selena. I don’t think Selena knew what it was.. But I did.

Demons come in all sorts of shapes, powers, and kinds. This one was more of a lurker.. One that fed on its prey by poisoning it with negative emotions and slowly eating away one’s innocence. It couldn’t fully go into the room though because of my “holiness” as the angels in heaven said. They told me that we are too bright and pure for those things to touch us, but they were wrong. No they did not touch me, but I felt as if Heaven was a bit corrupted.. I didn’t know if it was the negative energy that was affecting me or not but for once in my life I actually started to doubt the ways of Heaven and how things worked up there. I had a lot of time away from them though and as Selena started to get more affected by the demon.. The more I started thinking to myself about Heaven.
All of the angels up there, he had begun to realize, blindly followed the angel’s orders inside those big doors because he “supposedly” talk to God and was the only one able to. Mason highly doubted this. He thought that the angel said that just so he could have power over everyone.. But then why would he turn Mason into an angel? It didn’t make sense to him but he did know one thing- the angels blindly followed someone and didn’t have much of a mind, or, they weren’t allowed to. They all had to be the same, perfect angels. Except for him, the boss, and the messenger angel, of course. If they messed up or were unique in any way without authority, they kicked you out of heaven. Mason didn’t even know how much of a luxury he had until he had started giving advice to angels up there. They sensed that he was.. Different. Not because he had a different robe and more wings, but because he had been a human, something the angels didn’t understand. They also felt that they could trust him without him telling the boss about the things they said to him. It scared Mason, really, and he was hoping that with more angels being down on earth and around them more, they would, too, start acting like them and would change the ways up at Heaven.
Mason was so busy in his thoughts for weeks though that he had failed to notice Selena’s decrease in health. She was growing more hateful, calling her sister horrible names and insulting her parents. She had learned to manipulate them and her friends that visited occasionally whenever they came over. I started to see the people she hung around were affected by the negative energy as well, and the demons were influencing all of them. Her family was getting really concerned about her but they still looked at her as the old Selena, but I knew that they knew she had long left. She had even forgotten about me, but I didn’t care. I was just here to fulfill my duty. Those stupidly clever demons though…
It was probably Mason’s worst day that he could recall. He had been sitting on the same shelf for over a year now and was now collecting dust. Selena had stormed in and was yelling at the top of her lungs. “I’ll go out if I want to and I’ll wear what I want!” She slammed the door and started knocking things off of the shelf and breaking them. He couldn’t help but wince and feel his heart start to weaken and feel disappointed and heartbroken at the chaotic scene in front of them. He watched as her dad stormed in and dragged her out forcefully. He could barely make out the words of the 2, as Selena was screaming like a psychotic person now, her mom was crying, and her dad was yelling back. He did pick up a little bit of it though. “Send you to a mental institution to get you some help!” Her father was saying. Mason felt as if he had failed on Selena… It was that stupid demon that had distracted him from his duty! He should have glowed and distracted her from her problems and kept her optimistic… But he was so selfish.. So, so selfish he thought sadly to himself. He still had hope that he could fix all of this though. Maybe if he entered her dreams in his true form and talked to her…
But it never happened. The demon had weakened Mason enough to finally enter the room and it tried to attack Mason since he couldn’t give away his position. Much to the demon’s horror, though, when it touched Mason the demon shrieked and burned. It saw that it wasn’t going to be able to get what it wanted physically, but mentally, he had Mason trapped and outsmarted. It slowly slithered to the window and spotted a baby on a cart. Then it did something horrifying. It caused the cart to move downhill and onto the middle of the road while its mother was busy talking on the phone. An oncoming semi was coming towards it and it was honking at it. The demon knew that Mason would have to choose between the girl and the baby, and it knew exactly what he was going to do.
Mason suddenly disappeared from sight and appeared in his angelic form with all 6 of his wings spread out protectively in front of the baby as he picked it up and shot straight into the air. He was so bright though that the semi jerked its car straight into Selena’s house. Mason had put the baby in its bed and glanced outside at the house next to him and saw the horrible sight.
The house cracked and suddenly, it all came down onto the ground. He could hear the screams of the family he had grown close to as their lives ended. If that wasn’t worse enough, the demon was silently snickering as he took their pure souls and ate them up right in front of Mason! He couldn’t help but start to cry right on the spot. Then.. Suddenly the semi blew up and destroyed most of the neighborhood in a large mass-exploding chain reaction. Mason suddenly disappeared and reappeared in Heaven.
I still cry over my massive failure that day.. I cry for those that I had accidentally caused to die and never ascend into Heaven but the most part, I cried because I had failed God, the one person who had given me a warm home and merely asked me to do 1 small thing for him, and I failed.
Rumors have said that when an angel weeps, a massive hurricane comes in shore. Those rumors I will confirm, are true. For I cried so much when I got up there that hurricane Katrina hit the United States and killed even more people. If that wasn’t worse enough, my boss was dragging me painfully by all of my wings and was screaming at the top of his lungs what a disgrace I was. He stuffed words into my mouth.. Said that “This is what happens when you get tempted by the Devil! You get in his clutches and then become a demon!” He also said I had secretly planned this but I was too innocent for God, for any of them except for that angel to see. He held a trial in front of everyone… The people, the angels, and I felt God looking down upon me as the angels shrieked and threw stuff at me. They told me I was a monster.. That I was a demon that now belonged to Lucifer. In the end, I had horribly lost the trial and was going to be sent down to Earth for all of eternity. But because I had caused so much death and had “become a traitor” as the higher angels said, I had to be punished.
They cursed me, so I could only tell the truth so that way I would never harm a soul again, they told me. And then.. That’s when they did it…
The angel that Mason had once worked for popped a large hole into the cloud that sent him back to Earth. He was sobbing at this point, on his knees trying to explain to him what he happened but they wouldn’t hear of it. The angel whacked him in the head with the staff to make him forget everything he had learned up in Heaven so that way he wouldn’t go around spilling it out to “the demons and stupid humans”. He didn’t want to leave Heaven, even though his mind was very fuzzy but he felt that it was the one place that had made him happy and really warm and fuzzy. “Please! Don’t do this! I don’t know who you are but please don’t kick me out!” Mason begged the angel but he wouldn’t hear of it. He tried to push Mason down and actually had to get quite a few angels to start shoving him. In one last attempt, he grabbed a lower angel’s robes and tore it off as he fell from Heaven.
