Reptiles - Geckos, Lizards, Snakes, and Turtles!

Guys! So I already have a few snakes and a bearded dragon, and I was just offered a free crested gecko with his entire set up! The dude lives near me and says because he has seen how well I take care of my reptiles (were in the same groups on fb) he will give it all to me for free! We're gonna get him on Christmas. I AM SO EXCITED

Crested geckos aren't scary at all I find them to be extremely cute, maybe try that lol. Plus they're small, don't have teeth, don't need uvb or heat lights. They're easy to care for and just so dang cute. I'm pretty obsessed with them myself

They aren't that small.
Both of my adult females are as large as my fore arm.
They do have teeth, but they're small.
They can bite.
They don't usually, but they can.
They don't 'need' UV lights, but they can be used to promote healthier growth.
Just clearing up some falsehoods.

That being said, they are fantastic beginning reptiles, and they are pretty darn cute

I have a bearded dragon named Oliver. He was the first reptile I had owned. (other than turtles) he's two years old now. (just turned two in December!) It's funny though, because when I go to buy stuff for him at the store, the lady behind the counter almost always gives me a discount because she has a bearded dragon too. Oliver is like a cat though, he loves being held and stuff.

Also, my friends thinks he is the coolest thing ever!

As large as your forearm? Out of all the crested geckos I've come in contact with (which is a lot considering I own & run a reptile rescue), none of them were more than half way from my fingers to my forearm. Do you mean thick? If not, then those are some abnormally large cresties haha

Plus, I think when they said small, they were saying "smaller". As in, not something large like a Bearded Dragon or Tegu :>

Got to agree with the biting though! Adult cresties can sometimes draw blood with a bad bite.

But yes, from tip of nose, to tip of tail they are as long as my forearm.
I probably should have clarified, and I do/can get pictures I just am not currently at home (It'll be Wednesday before I can get to them.)
I have never actually had one draw blood, I've been struck a couple of times - but never anything really serious.
I've known people/have seen images of bites that have drawn blood -
It isn't something I would be super worried about though - for the most part they are very docile.

let me clarify.
alot of parents don't want reptiles as pets because they're scared/worried about sharp teeth, biting, large size (which means lots of money for enclosures) and expensive UV lighting. also people with little to no knowledge of reptiles usually think reptile = snake or giant lizard.

cresties don't NEED the UV or the heat lamps to live, so that saves you about $50+/- in lights (I use them for my cresties for extra light in the viv)
they don't have rows of large visible pointy sharp scary teeth and are more inclined to jump and run away rather than bite.
in the reptile world they are considered small compared to most others you can get like beardies, water dragons, tegus, monitors, ect. so getting a good setup for them is pretty cheap. (under $100 for a tank, where I have spent around $600 for enclosures for my beardies alone, I don't even want to know how much i've spent on my water dragon(he's 3ft long, so his enclosure is HUGE) & my snake. DX

overall they are great reptiles for beginners i would say leopard geckos are as well but i don't have any personal experience with those.

I'd say leos are an awesome beginners reptile as well. The most expensive part of owning them is the UTH+thermostat setup. While UTHs are pretty cheap/easy to find, thermostats can be quite pricey unless you find one second hand. nvn Another thing to take into consideration with leos is the fact that their diet only consists of live bugs (mealworms, superworms being the staple diet of choice) so the owners/the owner's parents/family shouldn't be scared of keeping gross looking worms. nvn

lol, i don't mind mealworms or crickets at all but anything else is like EH do i HAVE to touch it??
i got over that this week when i got everyone some waxworms, gawd those have the strangest texture(i wasn't expecting it at all so it freaked me out a bit) but hey my babies love them so i'll deal with it xD

cresties are really amazing pets-- most are very docile and tolerate being handled (of course, there are always those few who aren't quite like the rest).

i have a leopard gecko named sam that i got quite a few years ago :o
i feed him only live crickets and i keep him in a pretty large tank and he usually sleeps/rests on the side without the heat lamp over it, which is a lil weird but after he eats he chills under the heat lamp.

and also he loves being pet on his head and likes chilling on my shoulder. but im scared to let him chill cause he can get spooked easily and has no depth perception (where my shoulder ends and how far away the ground is) so i don't take him out much.
he's also terrified of boxes.

the most expensive part for me about owning him is the constant buying of crickets *-* $6 for 5 dozen medium.
