Her story:I was just a pup back when I was lost to the frigid wilderness. It happened one day, only a month after I was born into the world. I was owned by a rich man of Massachusetts by the name of Gus, an older man of 68 years. He was retired from his life of law work, but his hobby was dog breeding. He studded my mother out to a bold and welcoming male Belgian Kelpie named Garth. I only met him once after I was born, but I remember the look of his icy eyes, the ones he passed down to me. A month after my first breath, Gus passed away. We heard that it was an aggressive heart attack that happened in the middle of the night. Because he lived alone, no one was there to save him. My mother and I, plus the other Kelpies on the lot, were scared. Where would we go? What would become of our lives? I think that the scariest thing to us was the thought of getting split up from each other. Alas, this is what happened. As we sat in our kennels, awaiting our fate, we heard the yells of many people. That day, we all found new homes. I went with my mother to a middle-aged man with bright green eyes and a warm smile. The others went off with families, other breeders, and young couples. I learned that Gus had included all of these people in his will, so it made me a little happier knowing he had thought about our future. As me and my mother were lifted into the green-eyed man's enormous pickup truck, we howled to the other Kelpies, wishing a good life to all. But, as the truck drove down the road to our new home, I noticed something was off. It was January, so the snows in Massachusetts were still quite aggressive. The past week it had rained and rained, almost flooding Boston, but today...it was below freezing. In an instant, the truck began to slide over the icy roads. It ricocheted back and forth as the green-eyed man turned his steering wheel. All of a sudden, he lost control, the truck spinning like a top. It slammed straight into a very large tree, crushing the entire front end of the vehicle. I looked through the back window at the man, blood covering his face. I could tell he was gone for. I looked at my mother hoping she had an idea for what to do next, but she was puzzled. We were stuck in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by trees and snowy ground. If we waited there, we would freeze to death before someone came. I looked at my mother's feet, sad and not knowing what to do, when I noticed a cut in her paw. I looked up at her, cocking my head in confusion. "It's broken...." She lifted her paw into the air, cringing as she felt the pain. "You need to go and find help..there's no way I can walk on this," she said, sounding like she was in excruciating pain. "But will you be okay here all alone in the cold?" I looked into her dark brown eyes, nothing close to the ones passed down from Garth. "Yes, darling. It's the only way." I blinked back tears, my tiny paws starting to sting from the cold. I had never left my mother's side, but I knew this was my chance to learn independence. I licked her cheek lightly and then hopped off the tailgate of the truck. I looked back only once, right before the truck faded off into the distance, and I could see my mother watching me as I left.

I had padded along the frozen ground for what seemed like ages. My only friends were the wrens, fluttering around me, and the creaking trees in the wind. All around me was forest; no sign of civilization in any direction. Although I wanted to go back, I knew that there was no use when I had gotten so far. As I remembered my mother, her damaged paw lifting into the air, I couldn't bear looking back. Tears filled my icy eyes, but I continued on; my paws cracked and dry. As the day grew to night, I could feel myself stumbling. My body was giving up to the cold. I tried as hard as I could not to let it consume me as I swayed back and forth in the wind. "It's the only way.." my mother's words echoed in my head. The only way. This was my last thought as my legs gave out and the snow enveloped my body.

I woke up to the sound of chattering wrens. As I lay still, part of my body covered in snow, the wrens tweeted and walked around me. It was almost like being surrounded by vultures, except they were tiny, cute, and friendly. As I lay, more and more seemed to scatter around me, some resting in my thick, warm fur. That morning I watched the sun rise as the little birds made home to my fur. At the moment the sun had just set, a loud sound startled the wrens. They flew up into the air like kites, sending danger signals to each other. To admit, I would have ran, but my body was done for. There was no way I could even lift my head. In the distance, I heard voices and sounds of feet stomping in the snow. My fear was replaced with hope..had I finally found my help? "Joe, wha-what's that? Is that an animal?" A voice said.
"I don't know Xavier, I think we should approach carefully. Could be rabid."
I heard the two tall figures walking slowly to my body until I could see them in the corner of my eye.
"Is that a dog?"
"Oh man, she looks so beat up. Joe, we have to get her out of there."
Joe seemed hesitant. Maybe he wasn't a dog person.
The man named Xavier shoved his exposed hands into the snow, just under my body, and lifted me into his arms. The wrens sang above me as he did this. I think they knew. Joe stepped close to Xavier, examining me with a concerned look on his face.
"See this? She's got frostbite. We need to warm her up and then take her to Josh."
"Josh?"
"The vet, Xav. Now come on, we need to get her back home."
With me in his arms, Xavier trudged through the snow. I nuzzled into him, his body heat giving me strength. When we got to his car, a monster of a pickup truck, Xavier lifted himself into the passenger seat and held me in his lap. Joe started the engine in the truck and made a smooth exit out of the woods. "It's gonna be okay girl," Xavier said, petting me, "we'll get you all nice and warmed up and then Josh will take care of your pain." He looked into my eyes, a connection burning. How could I trust this man with my life, even when I'd only known him for 10 minutes? "She has gorgeous eyes, Joe. She's a Belgian Kelpie, right? Didn't the famous Kelpie breeder on Milton Rd pass away?" I yipped, quietly. He needed to find my mother. Xavier looked back at me. "You weren't one of the dogs who went missing were you?" His eyes and mouth went wide. I cried lightly, to let him know he was right. "Joe, this is one of old man Gus' dogs, I know it! They said there was a crash and two dogs went missing." As much as my strength could let me, I howled loudly. Xavier pet my head, saying "Shh" softly to calm me down. "Joe, the other dog. Didn't Cammie find her? Same colors and markings as the little one here."
"That crash was over two miles away. Gus didn't kid when he always said these dogs are resilient," Joe said, taking a second to look at me.
"I think the other dog was mamma, don't you think?" He looked at me for reassurance and I yipped a little at him.
"Well, our main focus is to get little girl here all fixed up. We can find Cammie tomorrow."
I couldn't wait. I'd finally get to see my mother again.

By the time we reached the house, a little cabin with an enormous fire place, I had fallen asleep in Xavier's lap. "Sorry to wake you up little pup, but we gotta get inside." He got out of the truck, me resting in his arms. Inside, I was bundled in blankets. Xavier carried me to the fire place, sat down, and put me into his lap. As I warmed up by the fire, he slowly pet me. "Joe, what are we going to name her?"
"I dunno, I think she's your dog. She seems to have taken a liking to you."
"How about Wren? You look like a Wren."
I nuzzled into him.
"I think that's a yes!"

After I had warmed up and my paws were dabbed with warm compresses, I was lifted back into the car. I fell asleep again on Xavier's lap, dreaming of my mother seeing me for the very first time. In my dream, she nuzzled me and licked my cold nose. "I knew you could do it," she said. When we got to the vet's office, I was snapped out of my dream. "It'll be okay Wren, Josh is gonna fix you up good. He's an amazing veterinarian." Josh was very gentle and nice. He talked to me the whole time through the treatment for hypothermia. Somehow, my frostbite was only minor, so he told Joe and Xavier that I'd only need to take antibiotics and pain medication for it. "You're really some dog, Wren. I've never heard of a dog that can withstand that kind of punishment for two miles. God must have been with you." If I could smile like a human could, I would have. Josh was so kind. I spent the rest of the day sleeping in front of the fireplace. At one point, Xavier got up and ended up falling asleep on the couch nearby because he didn't want to leave my side. When the sun finally rose, I could hear wrens outside. It sounded almost like they were calling my name, even congratulating me. Xavier and Joe let me sleep most of the day, until it was time for Cammie to visit in the late afternoon. "You get to see your momma Wren!" Xavier said to me. My tail wagged for the first time in a long time. "You love that dog, don't you Xav?" Joe said, giving me a pat on the head. A ring at the doorbell signaled that Cammie was here. I heard the howling of my mother beside her. When the door opened, the dog bolted inside. "Mother! You're safe!" I barked, nuzzling into her. "I knew you could do it, baby. Thank you." I looked into her brown-ish eyes, so happy to finally see her again. "So what did they name you?" I asked her, curious. "Hero," she said, sounding content. "That fits you mother. You are a hero." I explained to her that they named me Wren. She said it was a beautiful name. Every day after that, I would visit her. We would play and talk about our owners. She told me that Cammie was very sweet and was always babying her. Hero would follow Cammie around like a puppy, even though she wasn't. I told her I was becoming more and more independent, but I would come with Xavier on hikes. This continued for several months, until I turned a year old. I had become a very strong and independent dog. I had learned many commands; fetch, open door, dig, and more. Digging had become my favorite thing to do. On our hikes, Xavier would have me sniff out anything of import. Once I found said thing, he would direct me to dig. It was usually a ball or rope, but sometimes I would even find bones of passed animals. A week after my 1st birthday, an announcement was made. Xavier said he wanted to go up to Canada to compete in sled dog racing. He said I'd be the perfect lead dog. At first, Joe denied his request, saying it would be too cold there or that I wasn't strong enough, but no one knew me better than Xavier. He challenged me every day and I proved to him that I could be my best at the worst situations. Before we left for Canada, Xavier let me see Hero for one last time. "I know you can do this, Wren. You're the bravest dog out there, I know it." Even though I felt bad for leaving my mother, I knew I could be independent. "What will happen to you?" I asked her. "Cammie will take great care of me. Plus, you're definitely more fit for sledding than I am." She laughed. After I said my goodbyes, we left for our long journey.
So what became of me? I became lead for Xavier's sled dog team. We won races upon races, leaving teams in the dust. Although we lived peacefully in Canada, we took trips once a year back to see Cammie, Joe, and Hero. I lived out my days on the team until I grew old and retired. Xavier grew old with me, until he felt he needed retirement for dog sledding as well. Although he sold all his dogs, he kept me by his side. Every day we spent our time sitting by the fireplace, my now-large body resting in his lap. Every afternoon, the wrens called out from the window, "Wren! You did it!", congratulating me in my journey.
