Introduction
"Finally a day off!" I streched my arms and ejoyd the warmth of the sun rays, that break through my window. I saved my file on my laptop after i updated my data for the breeding association and closed it with a loud 'clack'. "I know that my cousin is really busy ith his pets on his farm but he wanted to bring her before noon... Why does he takes so long?!" Impatiently i walked up and down right in front of the window. If he arrives, i would be the first, who will notice him.
Minute after minute passed by but nothing moved outside... but then, finally, a jeap with an large trailer turned into my gateway. Hurried,I put on my shoes, took my jacket and run outside. There my cousin already prepared everything to let my new precious Crownie out of the trailer. "What took you so long? You promised you would be here early and right before the deadline!" He just looked at my with a "i'm sorry but this and that happend on the way" expression and continued unlocking the trailer door. "Wait a sec! I want to make sure, that she finds her place in the stable with no interruptions! The others are in their boxes too , so it could get a little bit chaotic." I run in the stable, closed a few doors and made sure hers contains a lot of straw and refilled the water. "I'm ready! Wait for me before you open the door!" Not able to breath normal because of the distances and my bad condition i run back and stood right next to my cousin, who already has his fingers on the door lock. "I'm ready... Let me see that beauty!" It was silent and then i heard loud hoove noises on the metal ground. She walked back, over the ramp and there she stood. Her fins colourful as burning fire, her eyes shined like the setting sun. And her fur looked like toasted from the heat! "How beautiful!" i whispered to myself and couldn't take my eyes off of her. Slowly i walked in her direction but with every step i took forward she got one backwards. My cousin came from the other side to lead her to the stables. Slowly she started to walk but had to look around a lot. It was a unknown territory, many smells flew throught the air and somewhere there must be other kinds of her sort. After half an hour she reached her box and looked around. Just yet she discovered the other starring crownies in here. I thought she would get nervous and panic but she just stood there and starred back. Nothing more. I couldn't believe what i just saw and had to close my mouth by my own.
My cousin came in after he made the trailer ready again and looked at her. "Take good care of her! She's something special! People say she has some kind of gift." "What do you mean with "gift"?" I looked at him with a puzzled look. I couldn't understand what he meant because i knew Crownies don't have any magic abilities... He just smiled, gave me a clap on my shoulder and went back home. "Thanks for bringing her!" I shouted back to him in a hurry because he was faster than i thought. He just lifted his hand and drove away.
Back in the stable she layed down and lookd at herself in the water. "Welcome to your new home!"I turned to the other Corwnies "And you don't dare to get her in trouble! Be nice!" The others neighed loudly and made me understand, that everything will be fine. SO i decided to let her be in her boy the rest of the day to let her arrive at her new home in peace. "Then i see you tomorrow! Then you will get your new name too! I already have some kind of idea" i winked and went back to my house, where lots of home work waited...
On the next day i woke up early because of excitement! As i hurried through my closet, kitchen and bathroom the phone ringed. "Why now?!"Aynnoyed i took the phone and put it on my ear. It was a good friend of mine, who wanted to know how everythig went yesterday. I told her that everything went great and that my new Crownie is a really relaxed one. After a while she asked me if i have already a name for her. "You know what? I got hungry because of description of her coat colour... sounds like pretzels to me!" She laughed but her grumbling stomach interrupted her. "Fine! I will come over in the afternoon. Take care sweety!" "Bye!" She hung up and i hurried outside. Finally i was able to see my crownie again! I hope nothing happened over night but my worries were for nothing. She stood in her box, moving her ears and looked at me. "Your hungry right? Wait a sec! I will have that solve in an instant!" Like every morning i went to storage part of my stable, mixed the ingredients and straw in an bag and started to fill up the bowls for every crownie. "phew... That's my own fault for having so many crownies right?" I don't know why but i started talking to my new girl. "Now it's your turn!" I took a load off the bag and let put it in her bowl. But then i remembered something from old times. As i got my first crownie my cousin told me that the first contact can be done with food or treats. I got nervous but picked a carrot from the bag and holded it in my outstretched hand. "Come on..." i whispered to her "I don't bite you... i'm kindness in person! Trust me!" Slowly i took a step in her direction. First she took one back but then her ears started to move again. She wanted that tiny carrot in my hand no matter what. Step by step she came to me and after seconds of starring at me she took the carrot very careful from my hand. "You see? Nothing bad happened." I smiled and put her bowl in the box. Bon appettit... Pretzel! Pretzel looked up and moved her tail. It looked like she liked her new name and continued eating.
"Today we will take care of your hooves, fins and fur if you allowe me that. My friend will come too and help with the others but for now enjoy your breakfast!" I left the stable, walked back to my house and prepared everything for later. Sissors, conditioner, brush, water, soap and everything you need for a Crownie bathing day.
General Care
Afternoon arrived and my best friend Charli came by. She also took her crownie bathing equipment with her. "Hey Charli! Are you ready? You know, my crownies love bathing but they won't stand still." I smiled at her and laughed. She also laughed "No problem! It's not the first time i helped you so don't treat me like a newbie!" Professionally she played with the sissors in her hand and walked past me. "Would you mind showing me your new herd member?" "Sure! Just let me get the equipment first!" I run back in the house, took the items an run back. Charli already stood in front if the stable door. "And here she is!" I opened the door and there she was with her sunset eyes. "She's a real beauty! Look at her eyes!" "In know, right?" "And how did you name her?" "Pretzel" "Really?" She started laughing until tears run down her cheeks. "You really named her after what i said? That's awesome! Hello there Pretzel!" Charlie tried to touch her nose but instantly Pretzel took a few steps backwards. "Let me do it Charli... She still is unsure about unknown humans but earlier she took a carrot right from my hand!" I got excited again and smiled like an idiot.
Charli took care of my other crownies as i concentrated on Pretzel. "If you need help don't hesistate to ask, ok?" "ok! Same for you!" I watched her letting my Crownies out on the meadow and starting with the first: showering with water, brushing with soap, water again and then the conditioner. Everything else got soaked in with water and become soft. The she looked after the hooves, cutted the tops of the fins and looked into their mouth. (Of course they are alright!)
After she started to soap them i started to look after Pretzel.I opened her box and let her out. Surprisingly she came without stress, hectic or feared. Now, I had to be careful because i don't know if she was washed in her life before or if she has any psychic problems with any thing i have in my hand. Slowly i picked up the hosepipe, put the water on minimum and started putting water on her hooves: No reaction
As i went up, her ears moved and she looked down where the water touches her but she didn't move an inch. Suddenly something unexpected happened! She layed down, so the water flowed through her entire body. Eyes closed she enjoyed the cool wet sensation on her coat. "Charli! Look!" Trying not to be loud i called out for my friend. She looked at my direction and gave me a thump up and a smile. I was happy how everything worked so fine with her!
After her coat was wet like a waterfall i took the soap and tried to touch her with the sponge. Now she looked at me but not in fear or agressive but curious. Gently i stroke the sponge over her dark brown fur. She wan't washed for month... parts where mud lasted for long the furs colour got pale. "It will be ok Pretzel... in a few weeks you will look like a newborn! I promise!" Again i whispered and avoided loud noises.
A second later a very loud metallic noise echoed through the stable. Pretzel got scarred and rised from the round. She didn't know where to run and what "attacked" her so she reared. With her front legs in the air i tried to calm her and bring her down. On instinct i tried to touch her cheek and layed on hand on her side. I don't know why but that brought down at least. Stressed her eyes searched for the reason of that loud noise but couldn't find anything. I also looked around and saw, that Amadeus with Farlan had kicked an bucket, which rolled all over the stoned ground. Charlis eyes were pressed together and her hands were laying on her face "sorry..." she looked to me with an "please forgive me" expression on her face. I gave her to understand that i had managed to calm her and that she shall continue washing the others.... but in silence.
First i didn't notice that i had touched her but at the time i just had to controlle the theeth at last, i remembered the situation and how calm she got after we discovered the loud attacker. "She trusts me..." I looked into her sunset eyes and feeled calmness, curiousity and happiness. "I never thought you would be like that... your past owner descriped you as a wild, hot-headed cow, who isn't able to be tamed in any way..." Pretzle shook her head and touched me with her nose. "Now you're in safety! You don't have to fear anything anymore.. Pretzel..." She layed her nose in my hand and in that moment time didn't matter anymore. If i were able at that moment, i would take the saddle and ride where she takes me! But for ow it's better not to stress her that much with new things.
After that i controlled her theeth, cutted the fins and dealed with her hooves. Now she looked and smelled like the darling she is. I was poud of me and Pretzel. We got to know each other bit by bit and one day she will be a full part of my herd and family!
I let her go outside to the other crownies and helped Charli cleaning my others. It was more difficult to take care of them than Pretzel did.
Breaking In The Saddle
This one will be a little bit hurried because i'm so tired... if i have time tomorrow (in my timezone) i will change it a bit ^^
Weeks gone by and Pretzel started to feel well on my farm. She hasn't any problems with strangers anymore and she learned the ways fromthe meadow to the stable and via versa. I also learned her "special gift"! When she's out with all the others everyone respects her and follows her. Whenever there is a fight between two of the males she goes between them and surprisingly, the fight ended without hesistation! Pretzel has such a calm presence that all want to to keep the peace by imitating her and her behavior. Now she isn't really the female leader in the herd but an important right hand or hoove and i think the alphas like her that way.
Winter came and the most crownies stay in their boxes to keep them away from the cold. Pretzel was curious what snow is and doesn't even recognize that it is very cold on the hooves. As i stood up this morning the snow stopped falling and it didn't look like it will start again until afternoon. "Today i will try it!" Determined i put on my scarf and glooves, put everything in warm clothing and went outiside. It was beautiful! The trees were half covered in snow, the meadow wasn't even visible and my stable looked like art from where is stood. Everything was quiet and peacefully. You could hear your own heart pounding without concentrating on it! "Fine!" My breath got visible from the cold and flew up to the shy. "Go mini cloud! Go!" I had to laugh about my stupid talking and reached the stable door. Fast i run in and rubbed my hands on each other to keep them warm. The boxes were all open, so they could walk around freely with no limitations but the stable itself.
"Hey Farlan!" I touched his nose and he galloped away happily. "Do you want to try something new?" I looked at Pretzel and she looked at me.I took the saddle and all the other stuff i needed for riding and layed it down right in front of her. Curious she walked a few steps foward and started looking and sniffing. at the saddle. Irritated she looked back at me and moved her ears."Do you want to try it on? It doesn't harm you... and it will help me riding on you my girl." Pretzel looked like she wanted to try out what i meant but as i took the saddle she walked backwards. "It's ok! Look!" I whistled and Cinnamon came running to me. I put on the saddle on him and he didn't do anything against it. "See? Cinnamon likes to wear the saddle! Right Cinnamon?" He neighed and walked a few steps. The i removed it from his back again and stepped forward to Pretzel. She didn't look pleased but she didn't go backwards again. I layed the saddle on the ground again and picked up a blanket. As i put it on her she hasn't done anything against it. "She might be used to it from her former owner" i thought and made sure there was no wrinkles. The i tried the saddle again but she refused it again. "Good! I won't do it again... but i will let it lay there so you can working on trusting him!"
Everyday i moved the saddle a bit, picked iz up, layed it on other crownies and put it back on the ground. I did that a whole week without trying to put it on her and now it was time to try it again. As the first time i put the blanket on and the picked up the saddle. Now she didn't look if she has any interest in it so i tried my luck: Carefully i put it i her back and tied it up on her stomach/chest. Still tense i walked back a few steps to watch if she would make any reacton but it looks like she has become used to it. "Finally!" I was happy and stroke her forehead "You're a good girl! A very good girl!"
I did that ritual eveyday. With the other items too! They needed much more time beeing accepted than the saddle but after 4 weeks entirely she looke ready for her first outside ride!
At first i leaded her on a great rope in circles so she learnes my commandos. It was difficult because noone ever showed her how to do that and listen to someone on your back. I always had other crownies with me. They reduced the oppportunity of a panic attack and if that happens they would be here to calm her because they know me and what i do. My cousin came here and there too and gave me some advise how to learn with her. "Why does he always know everything better than me?!" I asked myself and got a bit disappointed of myself but i will learn and some day i'm better than him!
A trained her five days a week and day after day i could see that she made progress. Sometimes she still didn't know some commandos but she has the basics. The weeks came where i got the flu and my cousin continued training with her. Surprisingly it went very well... she trusted hin on some ways and i was happy that he does!
Afer i recovered i trained with her another few days and then the big day came... our first ride. We put bags on her back to reduce the possibility of getting hurt if we would ride her but she never had a human beeing in her back... it made me very nervous and unsure but as long as i feel that i couldn't ride her saidmy cousin. I took half an hour to come down and stood right in front of her.
"Well.. Pretzel! This is our big day! Don't disappoint me... please..." I hold on the saddle and pushed me on her back. Pretzel made a few steps but then she stood still. I touched her neck and whispered in her ear "good girl! You know what to do, right?" Slowly i pushed her forward and then it happened! She walked foward where i wanted her to go! My uncertanty vanished and made place for happiness, proudness and lots of adrenalin. I took a deep breath and then i commanded her to run! Where? Anywhere she wanted! Pretzel started running and after a few seconds i feeld how her stiftness vanished and she enjoyed her freedom outside the stable. Suddenly the other came running too and now we are one herd! Me and Pretzel at the top leading the way with the feeling of freedomin our hearts! It was amazing! A day i won't ever forget!
Thanks a lot!
