Story outline
Twelve year old Glaria is an orphan,
she lives with her Grandfather. Her
farther died on a hunting expedition
when she was only one, and her
mother vanished in search of
dragons a few years later. Not
knowing them well, Glaria was
happy with her Grandfather,
and he with her. She often
wondered if dragons were
real, but books she read
said otherwise. So, she
contented herself with
writing about them, filling
notebooks with stories. Our
story starts a few mouths
before her thirteenth birthday.
Introduction and history
Hello, and welcome.
I had the idea for this story years
ago, back when twelve
was really old for me.
I've written the frist
few chapters out in a
notebook, but have
never gotten very far.
Hopefully I will finish it
here! Comments, critique
and art are welcome.
In fact, if you like this
story, please, please
tell me! Thanks so
much for stopping by!

A girl sat on a hill above her village, her legs crossed and her mouth in a line of concentration. Laying on her legs was a pad of paper, and in her hands she held a pencil. The wind whipped her golden blond hair into her face, and she tossed it away irritably.

The sun was setting, and she paused in her writing to watch the colours. Beautiful red, oranges and even some purples covered the sky.

"Glaria! Glaria!" a voice called, and she glanced over her shoulder. A man was walking up the hill, his short grey hair still with streacks of black. His eyes were blue, like Glaria's, and he had a white beard, unlike Glaria.

"Grandfather, just a few more minutes, I'm nearly finished my chapter!" Glaria cried.

"Oh alright," he muttered, sitting down beside her. They were both quiet, the only sounds the scratching of Glaria's pen.

"I'm nearly out of paper," Glaria sighed, turning the leaf over and beginning to write on the other side.

"The traders are coming next week, you can get some then," Grandfather said.

Glaria nodded absently, to busy writing to pay much attention. Finally, she was finished. She carefully gathered the paper up, and tucked it into her bag. Then she stood, and patted her dress down.

Together, she and her Grandfather walked back to the house.

It was a small, one room building, with a cheery fire in one corner. In front of the fire was Glaria's bed, and beisde that was the chair Grandfather slept in.

The table took up most of the room, and they didn't have a kitchen like some of the richer people did, they did all their cooking on the fire.

Dinner was on the table as Glaria and Grandfather came in, they ate quickly for it was getting dark. After dinner, Glaria climbed into her bed.

"We finished our last book, Grandfather," Glaria said. "What are we going to read now?" Every night, Grandfather read Glaria a chapter or so of a book. Last night, they had finished Fairy tales and mouse tails, a funny fairy tale book that Glaria had loved all her life.

Grandfather smiled, and opened his box under Glaria's bed. The box was his special box, only he was aloud to open it. Glaria had seen inside it once, it was full of all sorts of things, portraits, books, money, everything he could need.

He carefully pulled out a book, and blew the dust of the cover. It was beautiful. Blue leather covered it, and gold letters spelt out the title The Land of Fire, a true history of Nomania.

"Wow," Glaria whispered.

Grandfather smiled.
"This was given time by your mother before she left. She told me to read it to you when you were old enough. I think now it the time."

He opened the book as Glaria lay back down. She could sense magic around it, this book was true. Only a few books held the magic of utter truth, and Glaria knew this was one of them.

Grandfather paused on the opening page, a small smile on his face as he remembered something. Then he turned to page and began reading.

The sun was setting, and Splash was out fishing...

The sun was setting, and Splash was out fishing. His blue wings skimmed the surface of the water. It was only his second time out alone, and the farthest he had even been to shore.

A movement caught his eye, and he dove, vanishing under the water without a sound. He dove straight down, and gripped the fish with his claws, soaring back to the surface. His stomach grumbled, and he tossed the fish up, catching it in his mouth and eating it.

Licking his lips, he glanced around to get his bearings. Suddenly, something caught his eye. Frowning, he dropped into the water and swam under the surface, only his eyes about the water.

The thing was large, larger them himself. It was made of wood, and was floating on the water. A large treelike structure grew out of it, wing like things spread halfway up to the top. Right on the top of the tree, a creature was standing.

It stood on two legs, it's front legs holding the edge of the basket it was in. It was small, and didn't have fur on its paws.

Splash frowned, he had never seen anything like that before.

He was about to dive under the water and head back to the main land, when he heard something through the wood.

"We'll reach land soon," one said, in a high pitched sqweaky voice. The blue dragon started, supprised that he could understand it.

"I hope so," one with an ever higher voice said. "If our baby is born on this ship....."

"Shh Violet, well reach land soon. Then I can made you a house, for our children and their children."

"And no more whips, or chains, or slave labor," the one called Violet whispered. "Sounds like a dream, Ronnald."

Suddenly, something landed in the water beside Splash. He lifted his head out to see one of the creatures holding a stick, and firing another at him.

He hissed, and dove under the water. He could hear them shouting through the water, but not what they said. He assumed it was something like Wow, a dragon! They're real! He snorted at the ignroance of them, and speed through the water.

He lifted into the air and glanced back and the floating thing. Lots of the creatures were crawling all over it, shouting and pointing at him.

I should destroy the ship, he thought but he couldn't do it. The female, the one called Violet was with egg, he couldn't kill a pregnant creature.

He turned and flew back to the mainland, the elders of the tribes would know what to do.

Glaria was quiet, looking into the fire beside her.
"It's different to my history books, it's written like a story," she said finally.

Grandfather nodded.
"The author always wanted to write stories, so when this was written, she decided to write it like a story."

"But I've never heard of dragons in Nomania before. None of my other history books says anything about them!"

"They were killed centuries ago, most history books only cover the last few centuries. I think people were afraid of the dragons, so they forgot them."

"That's so sad," Glaria muttered.

"It is," Grandfather said. "Now, time for you to sleep." He kissed her on the forehead, and smiled.

"Night Grandfather," Glaria said, smiling.

"Good night, Golden one," Grandfather whispered, but she was already asleep.

Glaria balanced on the log, her arms out as her friends cheered from the far side. She stepped forward, and swayed slightly, regaining her balance.

“Watch out!” Katie cried. Glaria glanced back, only to be hit full in the face by a mud ball. She stepped back, and breathed a sigh of relief as her foot hit the log. She couldn’t fall.

“Katie, you’re distracting her!” Tomas snapped.

“I’m trying to help! Glaria, watch out!”

Glaria ducked as a mud monster throw another ball of mud. It flew over her head. She stood; she was nearly at the other side when another ball hit her from behind. She tumbled forward, and into the mud pit.

“You’re a mud monster now!” one said, advancing towards her.

Glaria tossed a handful of mud into his face, laughing as he tackled her.

In a few minutes, she was covered in mud, as were all her friends. Luke, the mud monster who had tackled her grinned.

“My turn to walk the log,” he said, climbing out of the pit.

The five children had found the mud pit a few days ago, and where taking turns walking across it.

Luke was halfway across when a shout interrupted their play.

“Glaria! Where are you?” Grandfather called. Glaria sighed, and dropped the mud ball.

Her grandfather walked up the hill from the village, calling and looking around.

“Glaria, quick, under the mud,” James hissed.

She shook her head, and sighed.

“No, I should go to him,” she said.

“Suit yourself,” Tomas muttered.

Glaria climbed out of the mud pit, and rushed to her grandfather.

“What on earth have you been doing?” he asked, glancing at her muddy dress, and the pants she had borrowed from Luke.

“Playing, its not like you haven’t played before!”
“Playing in the mud though? Glaria, you’re a woman.”

Glaria sighed, as much as she loved her grandfather, he had some definite opinions as to what girls should and shouldn’t do.

“So?” she asked, her hands on her hips. “Girls are allowed to have fun.”

“You’re not a girl anymore, Golden one. You’re nearly thirteen. Its time to start acting your age.” Grandfather glanced up and her friends, then back to Glaria. “Now, go and get changed and clean up, Miss Florence is going to give you a sowing lesson today.”

Glaria groaned, but she knew better then to argue with her grandfather. She said goodbye to her friends, and then walked back to the house.

That night, Glaria lay in her bed and stared at the fire, her fingers filled with small holes from where she had pierced them with the needle. She hated sowing, but all girls had to learn.

She glanced up at her grandfather in his rocking chair, dozing slightly.

“Grandfather,” she whispered. He glanced up. “Can we read another chapter of The Land of Fire?” she asked.

Grandfather nodded, and stood. He reached for the book on the table, and sat down again. Flipping through the pages, he found where they were up to and began to read.

The sun was setting when the ship first spotted land.

The sun was setting when the ship first spotted land. Ronald breathed a sigh of relief when he heard the lookout’s cry. They would arrive the next day. Then they could begin rebuilding.

The large creature that had attacked them a few days before had shaken the people, and a few even wanted to go back to the land they had escaped from. But Ronald knew that they would still follow him anywhere.

He turned back into the cabin to prepare for the landing the next day.

Meanwhile, the dragons had heard about the strange wooden vessel that was near their land. The leader of them all, the old wise rainbow dragon, Isicar, had called a meeting. He was the last of his kind, and was old and tired, only as large as the other dragon’s heads. But he carried something that they didn’t, magic. He sat on the large rock at the Blazing Mountain, and looked over the leaders of the other tribes.

Fang, the leader of the white dragons was talking with the leader of the blue, a young female called Urchin. Scar, the red dragon leader was huffing fire out and trying to flirt with the pink leader, Flower, but she ignored him, instead licking her claws.

“Come to order please,” Isicar said. “We have gathered together to talk about the strange creatures that Splash saw a week ago.” He nodded at the young dragon standing alone.

“We should kill them!” Scar shouted.

“No, we must leave them be, they can do as they wish,” Flower said, rolling her eyes at him.

The other dragons began talking, each wanting their own way. Finally, Isicar called their attention again.

“Quiet,” he said, loud enough to be heard over the others. “We shall see what they want,” he said when he had the other’s attention. “If they want to fight, we shall give them a fight, but if they want peace, they shall have peace.”

The other dragons muttered together, then nodded.

“It is a good plan,” Fang said.

Isicar nodded his weary head.

“I am too tired to continue leading you. I shall allow Fang to now, he is wise enough to bring peace among you and the creatures. But now I must rest.” He stepped off the large boulder, and gestured for Fang to take his place.

The white dragon looked bewildered, but stepped up onto the rock. He glanced around the others, thinking.

“I shall talk to my mate, but if she agrees, we will give the newcomers our egg. The young dragon will bring peace between us,” he said.

Isicar smiled, that was better then he had expected. Fang would lead the other dragons well, and there would be peace in the land of fire.

“The dragons really gave an egg to the humans?” Glaria asked.

Grandfather frowned.

“You know, I believe I have forgotten,” he said, closing the book.

Glaria ginned, she knew that was her Grandfather’s way of saying, ‘wait and see.’

She turned to the fire, and watched it burn. They would not need it anymore, as the seasons were turning into summer. She watched the flames dance, making shapes of dragons and humans, until she fell asleep.
