danielle wandered down a street that she had never really bothered to explore. this wasn't her home, it wasn't even the city that she had gone to school in. it was a city that she had been planning to spend her summer in, a place that was supposed to be for relaxation and fun. then it had happened. she and her friends had been in their hotel room, waking up and getting ready for the day when everything had gone on lock down. people were dying suddenly and then, horribly, they had been waking up again. danielle had been holed up in the same hotel room for several weeks, then they had decided to head out, looking for supplies and weapons. two of her friends had been killed and one had been separated from her. danielle was alone.
and now she walked down this narrow street, looking for a place to pick up more supplies. she was nearly out of food, and the bat that she had strapped across the top of her backpack was only so effective against the dead. a convenience store answered her prayers and she rushed in, not checking the premises first. two minutes into stuffing her backpack with power bars, there was a clatter and she looked up. maybe a person? she thought, reaching for the bat and holding it up defensively. "anyone there?" she called out.

holed up in a classroom of his old high school, johnathan's gaze flicked between his resting wife and daughter and out the window at the very changed town of forks. he gave a little sigh and rubbed his eyes for a moment, trying to ignore the exhaustion tugging at his eyelids. he watched bella's chest rise and fall with each breath and wondered how it had all come to this. he had been happy with is life in forks. he was near his parents, he had a wonderful job and a wonderful family. now everything was falling apart.
there was a clanging noise down the hallway, outside their room. johnathan's eyes widened and he looked quickly out the second story window, thinking that they were trapped for a fraction of a second. "eve?" he whispered, trying to grab his wife's attention. "watch bella. i'm going to see what that was." he stood, taking his remington shotgun, which had been his grandfather's and leaving his pack, just in case. he crept up to the doorway, rounded the corner and came into the view of a shorter thin woman with dark hair and skin. "who the hell are you?" he demanded quickly, keeping his gun's barrel pointed her way as he looked her over.

life at the logging camp had been half decent, even for a biology major. they needed someone onsite to help with not only the management, but someone who would have a mindset more towards the ecology of the logging. dawn had fit the bill, barely. it was decent work and paid well. the remote location meant that most of the camp had survived the initial outbreak of the disease. dawn had decided to go into town to scout out for supplies when they ran out of food a few days later. the emergency fire ax in her office, along with the pistol she kept on her served as enough protection. she had taken two others with her, and when she had found the high school it seemed like a good enough place to have a rest in.
"the second floor may be safer," she said, looking back to the two that were with her. they had insisted that they continue with their mission. "fine you go see if the grocery store has been completely overrun and i'll stay here for a little while." she turned and moved upstairs, her hand hovering over the holster with the pistol on her hip. she tripped over an empty wash bucket at the very top of the stairs, and cursed loudly. a tall man emerged from one of the rooms, and she instinctively raised her gun. "who the hell are you?" she bit back, lowering her pistol a bit. "are you alone?"

david had been visiting the logging camp the day that the disease broke out. a friend of his worked in the brush and with his wife dead and his daughter in university, he found little to do during the day outside of his usual chores at the ranch. he had stayed at the camp for only one day, telling dawn hunt and her work crew that they were welcome at his ranch if they found the logging camp not safe enough. then he had jumped into his big white pickup truck and drove home as if nothing had happened. the first day, his ranch hands were still on the property. he had two hands to help him reinforce the fences and build up better barricades around the buildings. the barns and the outbuildings were relatively protected, with the big, ancient farmhouse a veritable fortress.
now david sat on the porch of the house, watching the world drift by. the sun was peeking out from between the clouds periodically and the ranch hands were keeping themselves busy with checking fences. it was a job they were used to, but now the stakes were much higher. a loose cow was a little less important now. "rob can you make sure the horses are alright?" he said as the lanky young man walked out of the house and said good morning to the older man. mostly now david was trying to keep everyone busy and occupied. if there were any stragglers that came by, they could have shelter. but for now, they waited.
