"Fine, then," you say. "You go on ahead, and I'll check it out."

"You can't go out of my sight!" Tag says angrily. "And if you get killed-"

"Then you won't have to worry about keeping an eye on me," you say. "I can at least keep them from intercepting us, or alerting their group that another patrol is on the way, right?"

Tag starts to respond, but considers this. He huffs out a sigh and resumes jogging. "Make some noise if it's a wiser."

"Hurry back." You wave him off, waiting until he disappears from your eyes and ears to investigate.

You weren't lying - there is a noise coming from the house, or at least close to it - but the opportunity for a moment of privacy was too much to ignore. You've been surrounded by cats who you either hate or who hate you for more than a week. You don't care whether there's an enemy here or not, honestly, so long as you don't have to listen to Tag whining for a bit.

You doubt you have complete solitude, though. That feeling of being watched still itches at your brain, and now whoever's inside the house is very deliberately making loud sounds to draw you in. You sigh and walk towards the door, halting a few yards away from it.

"Is that you again?" you say into the open entrance. "The weird molly who talks too much?"

Something small moves in the darkness of the building. You narrow your eyes searchingly. They widen again of their own accord.

"Funny," says a tiny black tom, stepping into the sunlight. "Comingfromyou."

Your voice comes out much hoarser than you intended. "Scat?"

He lifts up his tail and glances around to make sure you're alone. He looks back at you, grins, and rushes forward, greeting you with a head-bump to the chest. "Beenawhile, shortstack."

As overjoyed as I am to see him alive and well, there are some important matters that have to be addressed. "Have you seen Thimble?"

"It has, yeah," you say, a little overwhelmed by relief. "I'm glad you're alright, but...have you seen Thimble?"

"No." Scat steps back to look at you. "That'swhyI'mherethough. We'vegotaminutetops, sojustletmetalk. IoweBlitzkriegalotoffreshpreyjustforthismeeting."

"You paid off-"

"IsawThimblegetcarriedaway." Scat's claws dig into the cement. "Ipanickedlikeacowardandgotyoubothintrouble. Didn'tknowwhotofollowfirst. Hungbackawhiletocheckthingsout."

"It would've been safer for you to leave," you say quietly.

"Never." Scat's eyes gain a steely look. "Iwenttotheothersideoftownandaskedtojoin. Theylikeme. Icangetplacesnootherscoutcan. ToldthemmynameisTick."

"That would explain some things," you say.

Scat glances around again and leans in. "Listen. Alotofcatshere hatethisplace. Sometimestheyhavefamilyandfriends ontheotherside. There'sawholesystemofmessengers for'across-the-border'communication. There'sanothersystemforfindingcats ifyou'vebeenseparated. IcangetsomeinformationonThimble."

"Can't you send a message too?" you ask, hushing your voice.

He shakes his head. "That'sapriceIcan'tpay. Messagescostmore. Idon'thaveaccess tothestufftheywant. But..."

He tilts his head and gives you a pointed look.

"You gotta be kidding," you say flatly. "Scat, I don't know if you've been watching, but-"

"No. I'veheard. You'reonlockdown." He lifts up a paw. "ButIcan'triskmyrank. Theydon'twantprey, theywantfavors. Advantages. AndyouhavesomethingIdon'there."

"What's that?" you hiss. "Every officer on my back and watching me?"

"Friends," Scat says tiredly. "Areputation. Catslikeyouhere. Youcangetthemtodothingsforyou. Lookathowmuchtheyhelpyounow."

"I can't ask them to risk themselves just for me," you say.

"Youcan," Scat says. "They'lldoit. Youjustgottaconvincethem."

"They could get sent to borstal or killed," you argue.

"Theycoulddothatanyways."

"Scat-"

"Asterpaw."

You step backwards automatically. Even with the size difference, Scat is glaring you down. He suddenly looks a lot older.

"I'm on the rooftops and across the borders all day," he says slowly, with an unnatural intensity. "How am I supposed to sleep at night if I know exactly what they do to cats like her?"

Something cold slides into your gut.

"Ioweyoubothmylife," he says, more calmly. "Sowhetheryouworkwithmeornot, Iwillgetyoubothoutofhere. But please makethingsjustalittlebiteasier."


This is pretty sudden.
