Shia smiled. "Okay." She lowered her voice. "It's not exactly a secret, but... I used to think all my life would ever be was waiting to die, for it to be over. I didn't want to kill myself or anything, but I didn't have any reason to live. Except to wait... I thought I was waiting for death. But I guess it turns out I was waiting to meet you guys." She laughed a little. "That sounds silly, but... Do you understand? The feeling of finally having a purpose, of belonging somewhere?" Like being home...

Ferondir nodded. "I know what you mean. We all need a duty, and a family."

Shia was relieved by this response. He gets it, I don't sound crazy. Good. "My family's gone, but now I have a sort of family here. It's different... But it's all I have, and I like it." My friends are like my family... But I still miss my parents. I loved them, and it hurts, but I'll be okay. I wonder if Ferondir's lost anyone close to him... Should I ask? Probably not...

He doubled over in pain again.

He stood up. "I remember my parents."

She saw pain in his face. Is it physical pain, from the amnesia? Or is it pain from the memories? She stepped way out of her comfort zone, speaking gently. "Do you want to talk about it?"

He shrugged.
"There was a fire."

A fire... Shia kind of felt like hugging him, but wasn't sure whether or not she actually should. "That sounds awful... I'm sorry. I'll stop asking questions." I don't want him to be upset... She made her decision, and gave him a hug.

"No, please continue, if you ask, I'll be able to find more memories."
Then she hugged him. Normally, he would have shrunk back, or faught. But he was still doubting everything, and so he returned the hug, as she clearly expected him too.
"It's okay, the academy took me in after that, and I found my place. The court wizard of Mira... someday."

Shia stepped away. "If you're sure... How old were you?" Amnesia must be horrible... Forgetting his parents, and losing his arm, and his best friend? She wanted all her friends to be safe, and happy. She certainly didn't want them to be sad...
