"Yes," you say casually. "I was with my friend. She was taken by the other cats."

"Nobody else was with you at the time?" she stresses.

"Nope. Or, at least, we thought we were the only cats there."

She buys it. "Where did you come from to get into that area?"

"There was a bridge on the outside of town," you say. "We went under it and crossed through a bunch of empty alleys and streets."

"Who attacked you?"

"I only saw one brown tom, but I heard other voices. He knocked me to the ground and carried my friend away."

"And why did you go in the lot in the first place?" Silver says, unmoved.

"Something had startled my friend, and we ended up running around aimlessly. I don't know what it was." You're surprised at how easily this comes to you. You don't even have to search before you come up with something.

"Why didn't you leave town?"

"We were looking for food."

"Wasn't there anything on the outside?"

"Nothing that wasn't covered in the stink of asphalt."

Silver glances you up and down. "Were you born without your leg, or did you lose it?"

"I lost it," you say coldly. "Not that it's your business."

"All deficiencies need to be noted before we can officially sign you in as a soldier," she responds, equally cold.

"I don't want to be a soldier," you say. "I want to leave, and find my friend. Whatever stupid little turf war you have going on here isn't my business."

"It is now," she growls. "You're in Moores. Therefore you're either with us, or with them, and considering how they treat cripples like you over there, you should be grateful that we decided to keep you with us."

"I've heard they take in any females that can breed," you say, bristling. "Why aren't you over there? Are you just too ugly for them?"

She jumps up and crosses the small distance between you to snarl directly in your face. "You want to lose your tongue, you little-"

"Enough."

Everyone immediately turns to look behind Silver, including her. You tilt your head to see past her.

A large, long-haired cat is standing at the stairs, watching you with half-closed golden eyes. Not a single hair on her is moving - she looks like a statue.

"You are to reign in your temper, General Silver," she says slowly, with a voice that isn't particularly deep, but reverberates around the room nonetheless. "I expect maturity out of everyone who works for me, including you."

Silver slowly backs away from you, still staring at her. "Apologies, Major. He was just-"

"Be silent." She moves forward in the same slow, deliberate manner in which she speaks. Everyone bows their heads respectfully and gives her room to approach you. Up close, she's dark brown with marbled fur, with a large, long white streak starting at her nose and ending at her ridiculously fluffy tail.

She's big, you can give her that. But as you look up at her, you have to admit that you're not the slightest bit afraid, even if something in the back of your head tells you that you should be.

"Do you intend to be difficult for the duration of your stay here?" she says to you.
