Choices:
1: Say nothing
2: Lucky too
3: Lucky too
4: Lucky too
5: Lucky too
6: Lucky too
7: Lucky too
Roll says... 7: Lucky too.
"Is this group also miraculously bound by fortune?" you ask sarcastically.
"Ha! No." Gabber grins at you. "We just have a great captain."
"The unbeatable, unbelievable molly of military might that is Blitzkrieg." Card stops to strike a dramatic pose. "Never lost a single fight, never pushed back by an enemy patrol. The best of the best."
"That's enough outta you crazy kids," Blitzkrieg says lazily, not looking back. You can hear a grin in her voice. "You're gunna make my face go all red."
"It's already red, Blitz," Gabber says.
"Best fighter in Moores?" you ask.
"Best fighter in the world, Hopper," Gabber corrects you.
The marred face of Charlie immediately surfaces in your mind. You narrow your eyes. "That's a bold claim."
"She'll just have to prove it to you," Card says loftily. "I'm sure you'll see for yourself in a few days."
You don't say anything. Neither does Blitzkrieg.
...
The rest of the patrol is luckily uneventful. Buildings and poles are marked over amidst conversations. You don't pay much attention. Your thoughts wander to Thimble and Scat over and over. You're not sure what's worse - that you know what's going to happen, or has already happened to Thimble, or that you don't know the fate of Scat. Either way, your gut flips and twists as awful fantasies cheerfully march through your brain, regardless of how hard you try to shove them out. Any attempts at talk from the other cats are ignored or given a dismissive response.
Reputation +1.
When you eventually do return to "home base", you hardly notice when the patrol bids you good night. You walk numbly for the shed, head down and tail dragging.
"How nice."
You jerk your head up and look around. That black cat from before is lounging on a cement wall to your right, her body stretched out much longer than you thought a cat could go.
"You didn't die on your first day," she says. Her thin, stretched out grin is still there. "I suppose I shouldn't be surprised."
What's it to you?
Can I help you?
Hi to you too.
Say nothing.
