@lil
TBH it's not good to feel bad about losing an adoptable. I've lost so many, it doesn't phase me anymore. If we were given an extra ten Viscet slots, and I won every Viscet I tried out for, I would of ran out of a lot of slots a very long time ago. I too tried out for #255, and lost, but you need to remember that's there's always another Viscet waiting to be made that you'll love again.
My best advice is to only try out for Viscets you truly connect to, who you have huge plans for and can spend time developing. I'm not quite fond of my Viscet, Asche, in terms of looks ( he's not my style) but I love him so much that he's plastered all over my profile, and was the first of my Viscets to have a baby.
What I'm saying is, it doesn't matter if they look nice or shiny or whatever. Viscets have high demand and so you need to worry more about what you'll do with the Viscet rather than let him sit with twelve other Viscets because you don't know what to do with them
Even if you follow this, you won't always win. That's a given for free Adoptables.
In my eyes, the Viscets that need you are the ones you win.
You don't always get what you want
You get what you need.

TheUnicornSorceress wrote:The ones I really dislike are the adopts based entirely on chance, like raffles and FCFSs. Raffles are excellent for for the MYO contests, but for regular adopts it just doesn't seem right to me. The visect could easily end up in the hands of someone who would forget about it. It reminds me of the rabbits that are bought on Easter and then forgotten a month later.

Well each to their own I suppose;
I've seen a lot of ones adopted by people who we thought would be invested in the thread that have disappeared with their viscet(s);
it could really happen with anyone and any competition.
But as far as FCFS(s) I usually give a five minute warning on here so the fanclub people have time to check it out too lol

    i agree with soulsplosion; putting all your effort into one form helps, since it allows you to focus on one specific character and develop it better. one form with a well developed, three dimensional character and an amount of art is better than many forms with shallow characters and little to no art. while the blow hits harder if you lose, the scales tip towards your favor, and speaking from mostly experience, it's a good gamble to take. it's how i win most contests, impress mes or not.

    and as a species artist i just usually make fcfs contests for either nonowners who have tried for and lost characters in a species, or just active people who ive seen take part in the overall community often. basically, just people who seem promising to be a good owner. regardless, sometimes i just make simple fcfs contests because i'm bored |D

    aight i sorta just stalk this fanclub in the shadows but im just g
    onna stop in and throw down my own two cents on this as well.
    well im gonna go and agree with what everyone else is saying:
    focus on one form. choose which viscet you want more and focus
    on that form for the time being. or, if you cant decide which you
    want more, find out which viscet ends first and focus more on th-
    at form ! from what i just saw, these two have some distance be-
    tween their end dates so i would suggest maybe working more on
    the blue one and waiting until that one closed before working on-
    the other form if you get me ? if not just follow what everyone e
    lse is saying and focus solely on one form.

    as for that 'i think im gonna lose' doubt, just hit me up via pm an
    d ill help you over that bump in the road.. as well as help you in-
    general if you need it ? key thing to think about is that its (mostly
    ) always quality over quantity. you gotta ignore other intimidating
    forms.

My advice is simply quality over quantity. And try to make your Viscet concept stand out from others. Instead of being cliche like "oh she's a singer" perhaps try a career that isn't such a huge genre.

Be unique is my only suggestion

Trust me, the others are right. And there is something else that I learned as well. If you have stories, they like those as well. Give them something interesting to read. Especially stories about friends, and maybe even past lovers and such. Just something that draws them in, and keeps them interested in the form. Not saying your forms are boring, as the coding is really pretty. Just fluff it out a bit.

    nods towards this whole discussion
    another tip: try to find what the judge(s) look for in a form. while personally, i prefer pretty 'coded' forms, a reasonable amount of writing and perhaps a story to flesh out a character, but it's not always the case. some artists prefer more art, less writing, and don't care too much for coding. i know some who just dislike text walls or don't have enough time to read it all. preferences, although they aren't real bias, can tip the scales. artists don't always realize it either.

    in any case, when writing, my advice is don't be repetitive, but don't use a bunch of words you picked out from a thesaurus either. keep the reader engaged, make a story that's thought-provoking but still does a favor to bring out more of the character you have in mind. use your story to build up the character, don't make it flat and unrealistic. it takes practice, yes, but it's rewarding in the end.

    if you're drawing art, try to do the same as writing and bring out your character. add accessories as you want, things that compliment the personality of your character. art of, for example, a music-loving feminine viscet, would look better with a bow and perhaps playing the violin rather than just her standing and smiling. sometimes you could just make regular art, though; it won't go to waste if you lose, it could go to the winner. if you're developing through art, though, i'd recommend more character.
