What turns you off when searching for a roleplay?
I know this is an unpopular opinion on this site, but excessive coding. I'm interested in the content of your writing, not how well illuminated your posts are. I also find that the majority of it is distracting rather than enhancing. Also, to go along with this, when people type in font below 85. Getting down to 75 is ridiculous; it makes me think you don't want me to read your post.
This new trend of preset characters. I'm okay when there are preset roles, but then we started presetting face claims. Then some OPs go as far as giving a specific personality and relationships with the other characters. It feels really stifling and it's almost impossible for me to feel comfortable developing the character. Really just not my cup of tea.
When there's limited slots, but there's like 5 million of them that need to be filled before the role play starts. That's how role plays die before they even begin. I think 10 is pushing it, but definitely any more than that is trouble.
If I'm not allowed to have more than two characters, or if I have two characters they're required to be boy/girl. I have some characters that play really nicely together, but very few of them are boy/girl pairs.
Length policing. It stresses me out when it's like "you must post 500 words a post, I will be checking", and that just isn't any fun. It also breeds purple prose, and I'd rather have nice quality writing over people trying to stretch a well-written post into two more paragraphs. Going along with this, when literacy is judged on skeletons. My skeletons are really bare bones, so I'll just click away from role plays that do this.
Switching POVs between writers. It throws me off when one person is writing in third and another is writing in first.
What attracts you when searching for a roleplay?
Planning planning planning planning planning. When people are willing to discuss and plan what will be happening within the plot, it really holds my interest and makes me excited to reach the next plot point.
I really enjoy smaller role plays. I think 6 is probably my ideal max, where 3 or 4 solid role players is my optimum. That's not to say that I don't like including a lot of characters; it's just easy to keep a role play running when there are fewer people.
Writing styles. I'm really picky about writing styles, but if I like yours I will be a happy little clam. I'll even join role plays in which I only like one of the writing styles.
Diversity in characters. I think that's pretty self-explanatory. Sexualities, genders, ethnicities, all the good stuff.
I really enjoy presetting relationships between characters. Usually role plays move too slowly to develop meaningful relationships if you're starting at zero.
I tend to like an element of romance in my role plays. It doesn't have to be the driving force, but it's a nice thing to have. Romance is the root of so many confounding plots that can make the main story more interesting.
What kind of roleplays do you consider to be overrated?
I really thought about this question, and I just can't think of any that are "overrated". There aren't any really almost unanimously popular role plays right now anyway. Sure, I don't prefer animal role plays anymore, and there are some cookie cutter angel vs demon role plays as there always have been, but they're just not my cup of tea. I'm far from calling any of them overrated. There are a lot of things I would try if the plot interests me enough.
Have you ever finished a roleplay?
I've completed a few, but only a few in my fourteen year role playing career. Not any on this site.
Really I'm just a huge brat. >.<
I do not have writer's block
