You look for any uncertainty on his face, find none, and nod. "Alright. But if we die, it's your fault."
"That's okay," Dandelion says cheerfully. "We won't."
He plops down beside you and watches the exit. You can't see anyone, but the cacophony of a mad dog tearing after cats is perfectly audible. You shudder at every panicked yowl.
"I hope Card and Gabber are okay," Dandelion says. "They're my friends, you know."
"I guessed that," you say. Your voice is wavering.
"Gabber said we don't have friends here." Dandelion tucks his feet under him and shuts his eyes. "But I think she's my friend. She always makes sure the big guys don't make fun of me."
"She seems like that kind of cat," you say. The dog is scrabbling around again.
"Sometimes-" Dandelion says, and then squeezes his eyes, apparently concentrating. "This one time, a lieutenant was saying something to me, and I didn't know what he was talking about. And he got mad, so he said some other things. I didn't know what those meant either, but I knew he was mad, so I don't think they were good things."
Someone, a cat, makes a sharp bark. The dog skitters to a halt.
"And then Gabber- she came up and started yelling at him. And he got mad at her instead, and had her sent to, um, to borstal. And I didn't see her for a while, but when she came back, her eye was shut like it was hurt. And I was really sorry, but she told me that it wasn't my fault, it was the lieutenant's. He was being a, um... well, I guess it was a bad thing."
The dog barks viciously. You hear shouts of horror and more short-lived cries.
"Blitzkrieg is taking care of us," Dandelion says happily. "Wanna know how I can tell?"
How can you tell?
As long as that dog's away from us...
Keep your voice down.
Say nothing.
