Your instincts kick in. Slowly, you step out of line, watching the cat.

"Hopper, return to your position," Blitzkrieg says.

"No, we-" You stop, swallow, speak calmly. "Something's very wrong here."

"I know." Blitkrieg narrows her eyes. "He was placed there."

"For what?" you ask, watching the tom.

Something echoes down the alley. The tom's mouth moves faster and faster as the noise grows. You think you hear claws on the cement.

"Back away slowly," Blitzkrieg says.

Everyone side-steps after you.

You hear scrabbling. The tom shoots a look behind him, turns back to your troupe, and mouths the word one more time. Your stomach drops when you finally realize what he's been saying.

Run.

From the shadows, two grey cats dart past him, splitting up and skidding around the corner of the buildings, swiftly followed by a humongous black dog. The tom moves too late - he's snatched up with a shriek and shaken back and forth. He screams, and his scream is cut short. The dog shakes him again and drops him. It holds him down with a paw and starts tearing at his pelt.

Gabber cries out. The dog raises its head.

"Fury," Blitzkrieg says. "Scatter."

The dog charges forward. The group splits apart.

You run as fast as your three legs will allow you, blind to anything but the straightest path. You dive into an alley, crash into a wall, and turn to get behind the house. You're blocked in. There's nothing here to hide you.

"Are you okay?"

You gasp and jump backwards. Dandelion has followed you without you noticing. His eyes are wide with fear.

"We should stay here," he says.

You flinch as another cat yowls, and is brutally interrupted.

"Stay here?!" you hiss. "The dog can see us! We're sitting ducks!"

"We'll be okay!" Dandelion says. He nods, as if affirming to himself. "We'll be perfectly okay. I promise."

"How do you know that?" You cannot withhold a snarl.

Dandelion looks you right in the eyes, and for a split second, you catch a flicker of intensity. "I know."

Asterpaw closes his eyes and looks up slowly before nodding "Then we will stay here...But I swear Dandy if they come down here, you are my meat sheil- IMEAN"

Stay. Dande seems to be serious for once in his funny-looking life.

"Fine," I eventually mutter. "We'll stay here." I can only hope that this won't lead to our deaths.

I take a deep breath, breathing in the scent of fur and blood. "Fine. We'll. stay." I murmur uncertainly, bracing myself.

Stay. He may be simple, but Dandy's survived this long; he must know a thing or two.
