I soon arrived at the school, fortunately I wasn't late. Yet...I contemplated sitting in my car and waiting for school to start just so I could arrive "fashionably" (If you'd call it that) late but I figured, that probably wouldn't be a very good idea. I turned off my car, the deep roar of the engine dying to a slight purr, and then silence. I pulled the key out of the ignition, slowly opened the door and got out. I leaned in between the seats and grabbed my bag, lunch box, and water bottle, all of which reminded me that today was my first day. My first day at a brand new school. And I was alone. I had no friends, and who knew if I would really make any. City folk are much different than country folk. I guess that's all something I'd have to find out for myself. I paused, eyeing the school. It was larger than the ones I attended back at home. "Welp. I better get on in there. I have no idea where any of my classes are." I said out loud, but it was directed to myself. I slung my bag over my shoulder, placing my keys in my boot, and headed towards the doors of my new school. What was I feeling? A mix of excitement, nervousness, and hopefulness.

Paige was never happy when things involved her have to leave her cozy nest of blankets and pillows let alone before the sun was even above the horizon but just like every year before this Paige had promised herself that this was going to be a good year and being late on the first day wasn't going to help. She rolled out of bed and onto the ground and blindly grabbed various bits of clothing since most all of her clothes matched each other since it was really just a mix of black, grey, and dark red. She slipped on black tights, black denim shorts, a grey Columbus Zoo sweatshirt, and a large red flannel plus a black slouch beanie to cover her mess of hair. Paige grabbed her bag and slung it over her shoulder as she grabbed some money from the counter and her skateboard and made her way to school.

she smiled wryly. "whatever you say, riles," a soft smile spread slightly as she got off at their stop, sneakers squeaking against the slippery floors. as they walked to school, riley asked yet another question. "you remember the large storm last night? yeah, i was drawing that," she answered. the drawing was a vague sketch, and she hoped that it would rain again so she could complete her drawing of the silvery rain pouring down on the bright umbrellas fanning out on the water logged streets.

he let go of the railing as the train came to a halt, glancing at farkle and lucas briefly. "come on boys, your feet don' walk themselves!" he joked with a grin, eyes lighting up with mischief. he hopped off the train after the surge of the crowd had thinned out, and began to walk to school. after a while, they reached the familiar brick steps on which students had begun to step on to get to their classes. "ready boys?" he asked, with a slight hint of joking, but mostly serious.

Riley paused. "...Well, maybe... Don't think of it as a storm. Think of it as a renewal to Earth." She nodded to the grass, vibrant green and covered in dewdrops.

she laughed. "well then, i was drawing the renewal of the earth last night, sunshine," she joked as a grin spread. riley always managed to see the good in everything, such a bright ray of sunshine she was. if Riley was the sun, then she'd be the moon, yet they complimented each other so well, maya thought to herself. "so, anything new?" she asked riley as she fiddled with the combination of her locker, opening it and stashing her stuff inside.

I reached the doors and without hesitation, pulled them open. A new school would bring on new memories and new friendships. "And who knows," I thought, "Someone might even like horses as much as I do." I stopped as I entered the school. Glancing around I found out that I had absolutely no idea where I was going. "Well, this day's starting off just great!" I mumbled to myself, reaching into my bag trying to find my schedule. I spent a few moments scrounging around in my bag before I finally found the slightly crumpled piece of paper that was my schedule. "Thank goodness." I breathed a sigh of relief. I unfolded the paper and read through the list. "Welcome to John Quincy Adams Middle School - Blah, blah, blah. We are glad that you've joined us - Blah, blah, blah" I skimmed the letter in my head until I finally found what classroom I was looking for. "Great, history. My worst subject," I sighed.

she laughed. he opened the classroom door, looking at all the new faces and the familiar ones. he spotted a texan looking girl, with brown hair and cowboy boots. ooh, we got someone from back home, he thought to himself with a grin. he grinned as he approached the girl. "howdy, you from texas?" he smiled at the new student, gesturing for lucas to come over.

"I've just been fiddling around with my writing." Riley said. She had actually been working at it a lot. Her grandmother's notebook was stashed at the bottom along with her notebook. She used it for inspiration, and often worked on her poetry during history. She had even completed one the night previous in regard to the storm.
"The first beat of a war drum sounds.
Terror stirs in the fear of young.
Loud and ominous the war is coming.

The first gun cracks out with a burst of light.
The first bullets on the battle field.
Slow but steady the war is starting.

One to one million, the bullets are pounding.
The sounds echo off of the roofs in town.
Tearing and roaring the war is here.

Heavier becomes lighter as the guns start to stop.
It's finally ending, the final shot.
Fast and traceless the war is gone.

Peace settles on the Earth's new surface.
Bright and blooming are the joys of life.
After rain is the most beautiful thing."

She was still not entirely satisfied with it, but she had plenty of time to work on it, especially in history. "Do you have the drawing with you?" Riley asked Maya.

she grinned. "that's beautiful, riles," she said softly but genuinely, face lighting up with pride for her best friend. she dug out her own sketch book, covered with numerous doodles and sketches. she flipped to last night's drawing, displaying it to riley slightly hesitantly. she wasn't sure if it was good or not; after all it wasn't colored in, and it was half completed. the only people she had outright complimenting her drawings were lucas and riley, and what if they were just trying to make her feel better?

"That's really pretty Maya." Riley was tempted to stroke the lines. She, herself, could not make art. "How did I get so lucky to have an artist for a best friend?" Riley asked, putting her arm around Maya's shoulder and walking into the classroom.
