Roll says... 6: What's it to you?
"What's it matter to you?" you mutter.
"Just checking if I have to hunt for you or not." Gabber dives into the bushes and re-emerges with a thrashing frog in her mouth. She bites down on its head until it stops moving and tosses it your way. "Want it? It's free."
You open your mouth to refuse, but the hollowness in your gut makes you pick it up instead. "Thanks, I guess."
"Boy, you're sulky." Gabber shakes her head. "Well, I guess that's better than you shaking like a leaf, crying for mommy."
She trots off again, catches another frog, and sits down near you so the two of you can eat together. You munch slowly on the skin, which is oddly hard and rubbery. The extra texture gives you something to focus on, at least.
Gabber gazes out to the rest of the group. "That's what Dandy did, actually."
"Hm?"
"When they snagged him and brought him in." Gabber chuckles. "They tried to interrogate him for an hour. He wouldn't acknowledge any of their questions, just wailed for his owner and kept asking to go home. They just got sick of it and threw him into the shed."
"Why'd they even kidnap him in the first place?" you ask. "Why steal any of us?"
"No one in their right mind would join the Corps," Gabber says. "So they go through the city and outside of it to bring cats in to fight. They don't even need talented soldiers, honestly, they've got plenty of those."
"Then what are we for?"
Gabber smiles. It doesn't reach her eyes. "Fodder. We're just fodder."
You stare. "But that's a total waste of potential."
Gabber sighs. "Let me ask you something, Hopper - where you come from, are any cats...fixed? Like, are they made incapable of having children?"
"N-no." You shudder at the thought. "We're free from tw- from humans. We can all have kits."
"Well, here, there's plenty of humans, and they do that to plenty of cats," Gabber says in a low voice. "And if you're a nil, or crippled, or slow, or weak, then you aren't worth anything. Cats like us, we're the glitches in the system. We're everything wrong with the world. So the quicker we're erased, the better."
Every cat is worth something.
That's horrible.
How can you stand this?
Say nothing.
