"My ex. He told me that he just couldn't be with me if I was so far away but he would do anything to see me. I haven't heard from anyone while I was here." Alex explained. She thought about how it had felt to have the guys she loved arm's around her again.

Mortimer pointed to the dog to answer Joke's question, but shook his head at the same time. He'd already seen the problem the heavy spool created. It could not just be placed atop the fire - it would perfectly smother it. He and Joke could hold it he supposed, but that might get a little hot for Joke; at the moment, Mortimer wasn't feeling any of the effects of the going fire. It made perfect sense, that, Mortimer supposed. But some sort of contraption was called in order to set their make-shift pot above the fire without crushing it, which had Mortimer pacing about the bottom floor of the mill again, searching for scraps. Eventually, Mortimer pulled free a wooden frame whose criss-crossing strings had fallen out. He brought it over to their fire and then set about finding two more pieces. Mortimer settled on a large cinder block and a rusted metal bin; both taller than the spool. Working quickly, Mortimer put the cinder block to one side of the fire and the metal bin on the other, resting the wooden frame atop them. When this was done, Mortimer moved to the spool, giving it a heave. But its base had barely left the floor before it came crashing down, much too heavy for Mortimer to carry on his own. Digressingly, Mortimer wondered if that had anything to do with his being dead - if his physical contact was limited because of it. But Mortimer looked over at Joke, pointing at the spool once more. "Help lift," he whispered quietly, gripping one side of the spool. "And place rim inside frame." Mortimer thought this would work. Or at least, he hoped.

"Ah," Ezra said, inwardly taken aback. So that was it. Ezra wasn't quite sure what to say for a while after that. "You know, Alex... well, there's plenty of other people out there. People who care a lot more," he added, not sure if it helped.

Alex laughed. "I know that. I just thought he cared. I'm usually wrong about those kinds of things though." she curled up against her pillow and sighed.

Ezra shrugged. This sort of thing was harder for him to understand. After meeting Jenny, all those childish mishaps he'd called relationships in his younger years had just seemed to slip away. She was all that really mattered now. But Ezra wasn't quite sure if Alex could understand that; that most relationships are rather fleeting anyway. It was all about finding the one. "Well, I suppose it doesn't really matter if he doesn't care. I mean, he should have," Ezra said quickly, not meaning to sound stand-offish. "But if he doesn't care for you, there isn't much reason for you to care for him any longer. He's made his choice and moved on. Which gives you the freedom to do the same without guilt." Of course, things - especially love - never worked that simply. But they always seemed so when you took a step back and thought about it plainly.

Alex nodded. She knew that this was all part of getting to leave. She closed her eyes for a moment and thought about what it will be like when she gets back out to the real world. She opened her eyes and looked back up him. "I know this is going to take a long time. I have a lot of issues and I don't want to have to come back here again."

Ezra nodded. "That's good; or rather, that's the first step. Knowing that you have another choice, and that you want to take it. And that's how we'll take it: one step at a time." Ezra gave Alex a reassuring smile, pushing himself back to his feet. "So, you know what? Instead of asking you what you'd like to eat, I'm just going to bring you a ton of stuff to try. How does that sound?" he asked with a goofy smile, walking for the door.

Alex smiled. "It sounds good. I'm really hungry." she admitted. She smiled and watched him walk towards the door, wishing that she didn't have to be in a locked room all the time.

"Good," Ezra said, giving Alex a smile before closing and locking the door behind him. He didn't mean or want to lock her in. But it was without a doubt what needed to happen. So Ezra made his way to the floor's elevator and then went down to the east wing's cafeteria. Once inside, Ezra went to the snack machine first, looking at the display for a time before deciding what things Alex might like to try. He piled the bags of potato chips and fun-yons, candy bars and gum packets, and gummy bears galore onto one plastic tray, than passing through the lunch line and grabbing up a plate of scrambled eggs, turkey sandwich, chicken noodle soup, and just about any other hot food he could get his hands on. With two trays piled high with junk food, Ezra climbed back into the elevator and went up to Alex's floor, somehow managing to pry the locked door open with his hands full. He nudged it open with his foot, slipping in with a complementary smile.

((Ffffff. Writer's block D: ))

Joke grabbed the other side of the spool, lifting it easily. He was careful not to spill any as he placed his side on the makeshift frame. He smiled at it as he took a step back, glancing down at the Doberman. He hoped they could leave soon and find somewhere nicer they could stay, without having to worry about the guards finding them.

Mortimer took a step back from his handiwork and gazed down upon it. The frame bent a little under the spool's weight, but otherwise managed to support its weight. Seeing that he had now to wait for the water to boil, Mortimer slid down onto the debris-strewn ground, wrapping his thin arms around his knees. Mortimer was still shirtless, and even this close to his small fire he shivered tremulously in the exposed and unsheltered room. He scooted over to the Doberman, running his fingers along the bloodied tee he had fastened around it's wound. Unexpectedly, Mortimer stiffened. His shoulders hunched and he went still, not stirring until he cocked his head to one side - listening. Did he hear... voices?
