Rat's scream as the bear hit brought its massive forepaw down on the girl was the last thing he heard. Blood coursed through his ears, deafening him to everything except his own breathing passing through his clenched teeth.

It had been years since he'd conjured more than a spark, and yet, the fire shook his arm like an old friend. He didn't even need a staff to shepherd it, it came willingly, like a kitten. It warmed his skin, heating the blood under it, setting his bones aflame. His nails dug into his palms, his teeth bit at each other, his lips pulled back and twisted into an ugly, comfortable snarl.

The knight rushed forward to help Rat, but he was too furious to thank him for his kindness, his focus now entirely on the thing that had created this carnage. Oh gods. He hoped that the bear hadn't come through the Narivi, hadn't come through Daemarel. He hoped the fresh blood that dripped from the beast's hide hadn't come from those people he'd been trying to save. He hoped, he hoped, he hoped. He hoped his fire and fury would be enough kill this demon.

Something had made the enemy pause, and it was apparently in pain. He flung out an arm, summoning flames to lick at the bear's side. The stench of charred flesh only encouraged him, and his other hand brought with it even more fire, encircling the beast. The bear threw its head from side to side, screaming in pain as well as rage, and Ilian did nothing but intensify the flames. It let out another scream, and then charged through the flames, apparently unconcerned by the burning fur. Whatever this thing was, it was no longer an animal. He threw fireballs at it, the element crawling over his body like a snake, growing tighter and closer to his clothing as he grew more and more frenzied, but it shrugged them off like fleas.

Someone hit him. He turned, ready to light whoever had done it, but paused when he saw it was the rogue girl who he was meant to be helping him. She was screaming at him, gesturing wildly at where he had been conjuring. Abruptly, he realised that the new human man wasn't next to her, as he had been. With horror, he turned back to look where he'd trapped the creature for a moment, searching for an injury. Oh gods, oh gods he couldn't have killed him, could he? The woman swore at him and dashed off, presumably to search for her friend.

His stomach churned, but he had to kill the bear. He turned to look at the beast, which was now looking right at him. He swallowed, and the remaining flames disappeared. He needed control, calm. This reckless fury was going to kill someone. He extended his arm, and ice erupted from his fingers, enclosing itself around the bear's back legs, giving an opening to someone.

In the end, Fabian shouldn't have worried about his impending death. He shouldn't have thought about his horse as nothing more than a pile of raw meat on the ground, or of Estel's decapitated body, or Tauriel's crumpled corpse. Of course, those images flashed through his mind in the space of a few seconds (or was it just the one?) and when paired with the leftovers of a severe hangover... Well, it was a miracle that the warrior managed to keep a straight face, never mind not bend over and puke all over his feet. He'd never live it down if he did - if he survived, too, and so did Alyce.

Before Fabian could steel himself for his undoubtedly grisly end, the beast was roaring out in pain, head tossing too and fro. Fabian was pretty sure he ended up with some spittle on his face, but that was really the last thing on his mind. Honestly, he just stared. Someone had to have done that, but who? The only being that he could think of was Ilian, and he was a healer - surely he wouldn't cause such pain? Then again, this wasn't a person and therefore Fabian was all for killing the thing. As long as it would leave them alone, he would be happy. If it died too - that was a bonus, as they wouldn't have to think of it again.

By the time the roaring stopped, the smell of cooking flesh was heavy in the air, and a chain of flames encircled the bear. Caltrops came out of nowhere, and Fabian decided that it really was his chance to try and get out of there. If he stayed like this any longer, he'd end up either dead because of the demon or dead because Ester couldn't aim. Not that he thought the other man would be particularly sad about that. Not that he was planning to die; not if he could help it.

Getting out of the way with the air of a man who wasn't going to waste any time, Fabian loosened his grip on his sword so the digits didn't start to tingle and turned his head. Alyce had knocked over the healer - what was she doing?! - and then run off, shouting at the top of her lungs. A look around told him that Ester was nowhere to be seen and, well, Alyce seemed much more attached to the assassin than to him. The bloke was likely dead by now, if he'd been in the way. Fabian had been unable to see much but the looming threat of teeth before he got away.

Ice erupted from nearby. It must have been Ilian. Fabian didn't even bother to look. He was ready for this, ready for the beast to die. They had a hard enough task without being followed around by it, leaving a trail of death. The animal was roaring again, but most of the crowd was gone. That was good - the area was as clear as it was going to get. Unlike last time, when he had aimed for a slice across the belly, when Fabian took the opportunity to attack this time, he chose instead to stab. His sword sunk into the lower abdomen and withdrew. Had he hit an artery? He didn't know, but there was definitely blood (or liquid of some sort) coming out. It covered his hand, and stained his shirt, but at least he got away with only a cut to his shoulder.

Ester had been a torrent of attacks, weaving in and around the beast with the lithe speed required in his line of work whilst it was momentarily distracted. He watched carefully for any lunging paws or gaping maw as he slowly attempted to wear the beast down. It was difficult. Its tough hide almost deflected the blades, only leaving shallow slices in its festering skin. Allya had slowed down her arrows, perhaps weary of hitting him, but persisted in attempting to knock one into its uninjured eye (he noted the other one was all but destroyed, the remnants just blood dried upon its muzzle). At the distance she was at, however, it was no easy feat. It thrashed its head wildly in pain and anger and Ester thought that perhaps, maybe he' get out of this one uninjured. He thought too quickly.

Without any warning whatsoever, the monster burst into a ball of flames. It not only licked its skin, but the area around it and the intense heat hit Ester before he could react. Remarkably, it was likely the bear that saved him. One of its talons hit him with brute force and he was flung backwards. His clothes were on fire, his skin burned like Hell and that blow had knocked the wind from his lungs. He rolled over, attempting to bat out the flames as he threw off his coat. The pain was excruciating, his skin blistering along the length of his right arm and torso and even upon his legs. He grit his teeth to muffle the agonised groan that threatened to become a shriek. That hurt. Ester was regularly roasted by his friends, but never in the literal term.

Alyce was the first to find him on the other side of the beast, her expression angered and concerned at the same time. Probably more angered though. Whether it was at him or the mage he couldn't be sure.
"Is it just me or is it getting hot in here? he joked. It was a bad joke, he had to admit. He probably didn't look the best, body scoured with harsh burns and a tight smile on his features. At least it hadn't gotten his face. Although, his hair was probably singed. That wasn't so good.

Usually, when one was wounded they would put pressure on the wound. When Ester lightly touched his burn with his healthy hand, it stung worse than any battle brawl or hangover he had experienced. Certainly, being an assassin you didn't usually take too many hits. It was you giving the hits yourself. He grimaced at the state his skin was in. In some areas, he couldn't even feel it - nerve damage, he supposed. That was not an entirely good sign. He looked at Alyce.
"Guess my modelling career is at an end. A pity, really. His mother was going to kill him when she saw these scars. Still, no rest for the wicked as they said. The demon bear was still alive, although he hoped it was on its last legs. Ester watched as Fabian pierced his great sword into the monster's abdomen, sending it roaring. He limped to a safer distance away from the flailing bear and prepared himself to leap in once more should it be required.

Allya had neared in the process of his burning. Determination set in her green eyes, she let her arrows fly ever time the demon reared, straight into its softer underbelly. She let another arrow loose that buried itself into the beast's soft, leathery nose. That didn't seem to worry it too much, unfortunately. Nevertheless, it was going down.

Leanne continued whispering words under her breath, a chant of some sort to keep warriors standing. As her supposed savior released a storm of fire from his fingertips, she could only stare in horror as one of the rogues was being roasted. He was probably dead, she thought. There was no way someone could survive that. As the flames stopped, Leanne's eyes widened, searching around for the man. Or maybe a pile of ashes. She let out a sigh of relief as she caught sight of him and the other rogue, then tried to focus her magic on healing him. Unfortunately he seemed to be too far away, so Leanne decided to just go back to watching again. If Illian wanted her identity to be kept a secret, she might as well. Lest he roast her like he did the rogue. A small grin met her face as the demon tried to attack again, but instead was met with a mix of ice, caltrops and arrows.

Leanne had never been designed for fighting. If anything she should have still been holed up in the circle. And if they did let her out, she was to be forever tied down in a room somewhere, healing all those which requested her services and likely being under payed. Not that she knew how much money was worth exactly what but she bet that that would have been the case.

Samahl continued to stay behind, as it seemed to be the best places for injuring and not being injured. He couldn't see the other attackers but figured that any enemy of his enemy was his friend. He tried to study the next series of attacks but it was fruitless. This bunch was too disorganized. They either didn't know each other or didn't get along very well, proven by the fact that one of them was roasted. Samahl dashed forward, thrusting his glowing blade into the demon's leg. The blade grew twice in size, slicing straight through the flesh. If that's what you could call it. Thick black goo gushed from its wound and Samahl jumped back in disgust, as the blade of his hilt vanished. "Every damn time," He muttered, grimacing and wiping the liquid from his face.

He ran to the side of beast, hoping to meet his temporary allies but also get a better shot at the heart of the beast. He used his hilt to focus his magic, sending a bolt of lightning to the bear's chest, hoping to cripple it and slow it's movement. His eyes glanced over at a knight, who also seemed to be covered up to the arm in that repulsive, black slop. "You must aim for the heart," Samahl tried to yell above the shouting. "Injuries anywhere else will only slow the beast down!"

Alyce  obias  aux
Human  Spy

With:  the  Party

She'd hoped to never again live through this. The fire, the smell of burning skin, it was all too familiar. Everything was playing out like a nightmare, the colours and sounds blurring into one terrifying mist. Mages. It was always mages that destroyed. Heart and bile raced each other up her throat, and her ears were pounding so hard she was sure blood was flowing out of them. Her feet hardly touched the ground as she darted around, trying to find Ester. With every second that passed she became more and more sure that it would only be a corpse she'd find. When she caught sight of the charred form, she was sure her stomach had fallen through.

She skidded to a halt in front of him, immediately on her knees and rolling him over, perhaps a little too roughly, and despite herself, felt hopeful. At the assassin's rough words, at the sight of his blistered skin, at the haze clearing from her head, she choked, and dropped her head to hide her expression. God, she hated him. She sucked in a breath to compose herself, and raised her head just in time to catch his second joke.

"It's an improvement if you ask me," she answered, surprisingly steady considering she'd been about to have a breakdown. She reached out and tried to help him rise, significantly more gently and controlled than earlier. Was it just that she was calmer now, or did his blistering seem better than it had a couple of seconds ago? "I'm going to kill that elf." She spared a glance over to the beast, which was being engaged by Fabian (damn him, did he want to die too?) and the aforementioned Ilian, who now appeared to be paying attention to what he was doing. Someone else was there too, she noted with surprise. Apparently there was no shortage of fools wanting to throw their lives away.

She stood, doing her best to support the much taller Ester. She'd move him away and stay with him unless she was really needed. Unlike everyone else here, she had no desire to become intimately acquainted with some claws. Not like she could do much with her ribs anyway. "Let's move before we get skewered as well as cooked." Where had the girl in the stable gone?

Ester was grateful that Alyce had reached him. He doubted he would have gotten very far without the beast spotting him as a potential weakened target and successfully chowing him down. That was how creatures such as this one worked wasn't it? Although he doubted it could think very clearly through the searing pain and anger. He was certainly having difficulties with the former. He cracked a smile at her jibe, glad to see she still withheld her snark despite the circumstances. "Okay now that's just hurtful," he retorted easily. She was helping him reach safety, although her muttered comment did not go unnoticed by him. Ah, so that must have been the reason for his currently festering skin; the mage they had met earlier. Ester felt no ill will towards him. In the long run, that attack had probably aided them a significant amount and although Ester himself usually worked alone, he heard there were countless cases of friendly fire in battles - quite literally in this situation. He did hope she wasn't actually going to injure the poor guy. After all, he was probably one of the few that could heal him.

His uninjured arm was slung around Alyce's shoulders, the majority of his weight on the side of him that wasn't char grilled to 'well done'. Agreeing with Alyce's statement, he stumbled and limped (god, he was beginning to feel sorry for himself) to an admirable distance and propped himself up against a wall. He gave another glance at his wounds and cringed notably. Ester didn't know a lot about wounds, but he knew that this one did not look very good. It was blistered and raw and honestly just grotesque to look at. Even if the burn healed without the aid of a doctor, it was sure to leave a nasty scar in its wake. Ester wasn't looking forward to that in the slightest.

He heard the newcomer shout, something about piercing the bear's heart. Ester felt the urge to sigh wearily. Was this monster ever going to go down? Fabian was fighting it off valiantly, as was Ilian and the other elf as Allya slung her arrows. She didn't stray too close. Although her face was set with determination, it was obvious to anyone she was as terrified as the next guy. The battlefield was slick with ooze and blood - some of the beast's and some of civilians'. Ester, in all his bravado, was still dizzy with shock and pain. There was little he could do to aid the others in the fight at all.

Allya was expressionless as one of her many arrows pierced the creatures other eye. It roared, outraged as it lunged up on to its hind legs. If there was ever a chance, this would be it. Though the beast was tall and, well, terrifying, Ester prayed that Ilian, Fabian, the newcomer or even Allya would have the gall to finally end this stretched battle. Ester was sure everyone had a fair amount of stamina (god knew Fabian did with the way he acted), but there was only so many hits you could take, so many times you could strike before you began to wear thin. The beast knew no such mortality, so Ester could only hope that this horrible nightmare would end soon.

This fight was dragging on too long. While the immediate area was clear of civilian activity, and none of the townsfolk would be injured, the demon bear was still too strong, too full of life, and they were quickly running out of energy. Alyce had taken Ester off to the sidelines, the young woman from inside the barn had yet to show her face, and Allya was still notching arrow after arrow and letting them fly, but she would soon run out. That left himself, Illian, and the male that came running from behind the bear. He looked like he'd been busy doing whatever he could to help, and the words shouted over the bear's roar told Fabian that he apparently knew exactly what he was doing. Fabian did not enjoy being told what to do, but in this situation he was at a loss. He didn't know how to kill demons, after all.

Perhaps, if he had, they would not have lost the majority of their group the first time they faced the beast.

His clothes clung to his skin where they had been soaked with the tar-coloured blood. It stunk, too, and he would have to face it once more. He just needed an opening, one large enough that he had time to get in and out, as well as thrusting his sword into the beast's chest. It was a long shot, a massive shot, and there would likely only be one chance. The warrior watched carefully, eyes darting back and forth. Allya was still shooting her arrows, and one hit the mark of the bear's intact eye. A roar like thunder filled the air and Fabian was sure the ground was shaking, but as the animal reared up he knew there would never be another chance. He had to get in there, and that was what he did, running back into the fray and plunging his sword through a gap between two ribs and into the heart. He really should have expected the hit he got, the massive impact of a paw to his side. It didn't help that the floor was so slippy.

His sword stayed in the chest cavity, wretched from his grip, and Fabian quite literally went flying. Not for long, due to nearby buildings; he thudded into one and, God, the pain was unbearable (no pun intended). He could already feel the blood - his own blood - soaking through his shirt and coat via very big tears, and there was something else too, in his upper leg. He didn't like it whatsoever, but all he could do was watch, slumped against a wall (probably with another concussion) as the bear finally stopped roaring and stumbled.

His breath shuddered in his throat, his eyes fixed on the blurred form of the bear. He hadn't noticed before, unable to see anything beyond the fact that it was huge and trying to kill people, but as the bloodlust wore out and he grew more lucid, he noted with a vague feeling of dread that there was something familiar about it. He shook the thought from his head, reasoning it would be easier to place his finger on what was causing this once the beast was dead. It took a great deal of concentration to keep his magic centred on the bear; he was out of practice, and had no staff to help channel it. Even so, it appeared that his efforts were enough, and he watched as the knight (who was injured, he remembered, too late to call out and stop him) charged the animal.

Predictably, he was thrown to the side, crumpling like a leaf underfoot. Ilian winced involuntarily, though he was far enough that he couldn't tell how bad the injury was exactly, likely to be potentially life threatening. Less predictably, the bear sank to the ground, dead. The elf heaved out a relieved sigh, clenching his fingers around the layer of frost that had started forming on his hands, already turning heel to try and stem the worst of the bleeding. He felt a pull of guilt at leaving the man he himself had injured, but Fabian's wounds were more likely to kill him quickly. He couldn't see the mage girl, and hoped that she had taken some initiative and gone to help heal the burns. Oh Gods, he really hoped that she knew at least basic healing.

He fell to his knees, pressing a cool hand against the most obvious wound on Fabian's abdomen, thankful now for the ice on his palms. That would help disinfect, as well as help stem the bleeding. His head was starting to throb as he began to pour the magic into the wound, starting to close it over, overexertion most likely. Forcing his eyes open (when had he closed them?) he moved his free hand to wave in front of Fabian's face, checking that he was concious and responsive. He was, poor man. He hadn't lost enough blood to pass out yet, meaning he was feeling every bit of that no doubt excruciating pain. "Can you hear me? Are you hurt anywhere else?" The words came slurred, roughened with exhaustion. Sweet Vahril. How embarrassing. Hopefully the knight wouldn't notice, too distracted by his own problems.

Ilian raised his head for a second, checking to make sure nothing was approaching, and was relieved to see the distant, smudged form of what he hoped was the mage girl running over to where he could see another two outlines. Everyone else would have run. At least Ester would get treatment, even if the girl was inexperienced and likely to leave scarring. Not that he would fare much better himself; he had no natural aptitude for this school of magic, nor any formal teaching, as he had in other forms. All he knew was from his own experience. "This is going to scar badly, but you'll live. It is an easier fix than your shoulder." That probably wasn't comforting at this moment in time, he knew, but it was important to keep his patient talking. If he'd suffered concussion, passing out could be lethal. "I take it the culprit that was at fault for that is now lying over there?"

Allya had been beginning to grow anxious. Her seemingly limitless quiver of arrows was a dam about to run dry and the beast didn't appear to be letting up soon, no matter the amount of punches they threw. Ester was out of action, Alyce with him. Everyone was growing more fatigued by the moment. If someone didn't do something drastic soon she feared this would already be the end of their journey.

One of her last arrows pierced the beast's other eye and it roared and reared like a ravenous God. She thought, 'surely no one could be stupid enough to-' But the words were cut short as Fabian drove his blade into the bear's chest. Like a pesky fly, he was swatted away. Allya momentarily relived their first battle - how he fell of a similar cause. Her teeth ground as he impacted the building, smacking the stone with a sickening sound. She hadn't fully intended to become Fabian's personal nurse, but still, she started towards his injured form for the second time this week (and what a week it had been). Thankfully, Ilian beat her to it. She was naturally cautious of mages but this Ilian....he was a healer. He could do far better than any herbs or tonic could manage. Injuring Ester had been a foolish mistake on his part, but reality was they needed him - no matter what Alyce may like to think.

Allya, tired and filthy, allowed herself this one moment of relief. Sheathing her bow, she eyed the others. They were all a mess. Beaten, bloody and bruised but alive. There were no dead bodies to bury (or rather leave, unattended and forgotten) like last time. Only that of the monster they had slain. To her right, she heard Ester emit a breathy laugh of reprieve. A small smile even touched Allya's lips. There was still work to be done, however. Who was the elf who had joined them? Was he at fault? Surely not, considering the aid he gave. Reluctantly, Allya strode up to the bear as she hesitantly retrieved any salvageable arrows. She approached it with caution, like it could jump up and devour her at any moment.

Returning to Alyce's side, Allya was glad to see Ester was conscious (if barely). She did not like the man but that didn't mean she wanted him dead. He appeared to be joking with her, despite the third-degree burns splayed out painfully on his body.
"I'm going to need more clothes," he said. He was slumped against the wall, barely able to hold himself up and the aforementioned clothing was scorched and stuck to his blistered flesh. "This was my favourite jacket, too." Allya repressed the urge to cast him an unimpressed glare.

He was flopped against a stone building, with a headache that pulsed on either sides of his head and made him feel like he would be better if he had died on impact; his clothes looked like he'd committed several murders in a very short time; and he was fairly convinced that his shoulder had probably shattered by now. The knight didn't know what had happened to his leg, but that wasn't pleasant either. He wouldn't be able to stand, never mind get out of the way if he had not managed to finish off the damn bear. He was, after all, a very easy target now, probably the easiest in the square. The bear certainly wouldn't go after Allya, not with him sitting there like an easy snack.

Thankfully, something seemed to be protecting him, because the bear died. Well, that was the end of that, but would it also be the end of him? Fabian didn't want to die. That was the reason he'd gotten himself out of Aelhaven in the first place. Darkness was tugging at the corners of his eyes and Fabian was pretty sure his eyelids were drooping, and yet he knew that the last thing he should do was let himself sleep, no matter how tempting it was. He needed to stay awake, otherwise he certainly would be dead. Not that he really thought anyone would miss him, but he had a lot of things left to do.

However, it was still a shock when a freezing hand was pressed to his abdomen - he even managed to jump a little bit, eyes shooting open to see Illian with his eyes closed, obviously focused on making sure he didn't bleed to death. A hand was waved in his face and he nearly tried to turn his head away, but that would only make him puke. Not exactly something that would help matters. "Shoulder," he grunted. Actually, it was more of a slur, and he just had to hope that the healer would be able to understand him enough to help, "'ead. An' m' leg." He didn't care about scars; he had enough already. One more wasn't going to do any harm. Except it was likely more than one, but they would provide an interesting story for bed partners. And likely paint him in a better light than his past, which was always a bonus. As for whether the bear had caused his previous shoulder injury, well.... He tried to nod, but bile began to rise in his throat from the movement and he swallowed thickly, aware he probably looked green now instead of just pale. "I came off better than some of the others." Dead, dead, dead. And you're going to join them. Maybe Alyce would be sad if he passed.
