[Fae, Mermen, just some few species suggestions]
Valeria exited her home, cape securely around her neck. She was worried, as her powers expressed themselves more freely lately. Any injury she had would heal quickly than normal and she, the one who was sick every time, didn't get a cold all the year. There were no scars visibly, when there should be a sea.
The girl feared that one day, they would find out.
And that day, it wouldn't be a pretty one. She had heard what they apparently did. They killed and lied, and the hunters had no humanity. Sincerely, they disgusted her a bit.
The woods were a safe place tough, because they thought freaks would hide in obvious places. The trees shielded from the views of others, as the trunks were tall and thick. It was a safe heaven of sorts. Food could be provided from trees and Valeria would surely run there first. Her parents, while kind and understanding, surely wouldn't want an abnormality in their houses (or she told herself that, in reality her guardians would never do that).
Valeria liked the forest, too. She edged away from the alley leading her to school, taking the path leading her to the mass of trees.
The smell was everywhere, the one of fresh dew and the clean air emanated by the plants in photosynthesis. Untamed grass tickled her arms as she searched for a leaf to twirl. Speaking of leaves, they were of all shapes and colors.
The forest was a beauty.
No one really stopped and smelled the roses anymore. It was either job or school, home and sleep. Rinse and repeat. No dancing through the rain, no coming home soaked because you rolled in the snow, no senseless wandering just for the sake of it. It was saddening, but the children learn from the parents too.
Valeria sometimes didn't hear right, she was blind if you told her to search for a specific detail, but she was definitely not stupid. Wolves were anormal around the area, and they had been given a kill-on-sight order as they could damage property.
And normal wolves didn't own a pair of intricate markings on their fur. They were crimson, the color of blood on pure black. Why didn't the hunters spot it? And wolves were in packs, why was this one lonely? It didn't make sense.
But again, she wasn't stupid enough to go after a wolf, of all the things, without a safe pointy weapon. Or a piece of bloody meat to distract a carnivorous creature.
It was a well known subject that Valeria hated decisions. In fact, it was probably the one thing she despised so much even the thought of them made her mildly angry. Decisions were hard to make, as the ones you choose could affect your future or the one of those around you. Why, oh why couldn't life be normal for once was beyond the girl.
The wolf was at a safe distance, at least a few feet so she could run. If she died, it would make her parents sad so she would keep alive for now.
But then, something amazing happened. The wolf changed into a human. She had read mythology about shape-shifters, as they choose to shift from the humanoid shape of the body to an animal.
Sounds painful. It implies changing your entire bone structure to the current animal. Valeria was actually glad she was just fast-healing, at least that's an advantage.
But still, males were males and males were aggressive. She didn't want to be spotted and probably be demanded to explain all that she had seen. The brown-haired girl wasn't ready to tell her secret yet, as she didn't know this stranger.
