"So there's hope?" I breathe, hardly daring to believe my ears.

"So there is some hope after all?" you say, half-breathless with excitement.

"She was a fierce leader, and a savvy nomad," Momma says. "We all thought that she was immortal. Perhaps Mercy smiles upon us once more."

You're too overcome with emotions to respond. A small part of your brain squeaks angrily at you - don't get your hopes up, this was long ago, two generations, she's most likely dead by now, calm down - and is swiftly deafened by the roar of blood being pumped through your body at a hundred beats a minute. You grin at Momma, and she smiles broadly back.

"I know the city that she went to," she says. Her face falls a little. "But you should know, Asterpaw - that place is a void. No news ever comes out of it, and no one has dared to venture in for quite some time. I have no idea what awaits you there. It could be anything."

"And it could be nothing." You stand up. "I won't leave any stone unturned if that means getting home."

Momma looks at you approvingly. "You're very brave. I wouldn't have gone near there, even when I was young."

"Brave or stupid," you say. "I don't really care which. I've been in a city before."

"I never did like them, personally." Momma looks up at the sky, where you can barely see some stars. "Jungles of concrete and glass, and so many unhappy cats there, wandering around lost."

"I was told once that the twolegs built it for themselves."

"Yes." Mom blinks slowly. How odd - the stars reflect off of her eyes. "Perhaps that's why we were so confused."

The morning eventually comes, but you can't be persuaded to sleep again. Thimble brings back a massive amount of birds, squirrels and mice to celebrate, while Scat assists Momma in gathering more traveling herbs for your breakfast. You can faintly hear singing in the direction they had gone - a sweet, warbling voice, and something between a hum and a hiss. It's eerie and absolutely fascinating to listen to.

Meanwhile, you talk with Rain and Oat, who is comfortable enough to let you sit near the kittens. While they jump all over you and pull at your ears, you listen closely to the older mollies' sage advice.

"Personally, I'd stick by the highway," Rain is saying. She's got a pouting kitten locked between her front feet in a time-out. "It's not particularly safe if you're walking right on the cement, but highways are straight. They'll take you directly to any human establishments."

"There might be groups living near the road," Oat says quietly.

"Maybe, but I wouldn't hedge my bets," Rain says. "Not many cats are stupid enough to live right on the busiest road possible."

"That's the double-edged bit, I suppose," Oat says. She looks up at you, though she never quite reaches your eyes. "You're in a dangerous zone, but by being there, no one will come for you."

"You're gunna have to go out of your way to find food, as well," Rain says. "I assume you've seen roadkill once or twice?"

"I've heard about it at home," you say. "But I haven't seen it yet."

"Highways are rife with roadkill. Brace yourself for that." Rain points her tail at you in a gesture of seriousness. "And don't touch them. In fact, keep as far away from them as you can. That's prime car-hitting location."

You glance at your stump. "I'm familiar with that, at least."

Rain grimaces, and Oat flinches. You look up again to see them looking away. Did you say something wrong?
