I think it depends on where you live. In Europe, I guess almost everyone knows about it, whereas in America or other continent there may be fewer people who have heard of it.

I, too, thought this was common knowledge, akin to other events related to high levels of radiation/destruction, such as Nagasaki and Hiroshima. To say that "noone [sic] knows of this" is a bit of a stretch, really. There have been numerous articles in magazines and journals (I myself read about Chernobyl a few years ago in National Geographic) detailing what happened and the aftermath to this day, not to mention learning about it in History class. And yes, I am from the United States (not that I believe location has any correlation to this knowledge, but that's neither here-nor-there) and know about it.

But, yes. It was a terrifying tragedy that has a great reach to the present day. Seeing the images of the aftermath will chill the bones of anyone. (This is the NG article I read.)

I'm tempted to say 'no' on the poll seeing how we aren't having this hidden. n_n;

Uhm, Chernobyl wasn't exactly a cover-up job. It was pretty big news. Not something easy to throw a blanket over.

Edit: For the record, I live in America, we were taught about Chernobyl (briefly) in highschool.

I couldn’t count on anyone to stand there behind me
And keep the dogs from dragging me off with them
While I slept you crept in and pulled the rug right out from under me
Then the rain stole away and took the parts that kept me functioning

My heart will be blacker than your eyes when I’m through with you

I actually feel pretty ignorant now. I knew about the atomic bombs, but I don't think this was ever covered in our classes. I'm from Canada, and I took history through most of high school. I'm sad and disappointed that I didn't know about this.
