Impossibly, so impossibly, the dark tabby brute's loud, crooning noises that reverberated deep within his chest grew louder and louder still. He was never one to be so enraptured by a female before, and this.. sudden affection and longing for the lithe, wiry female with her head pressed delicately against him made him feel.. frightened. He didn't know what was wrong with him. Usually, the pale blue-eyed tomcat would fawn over a pretty she-cat for about a day or so before moving on to the next female that caught his eye, but.. There was something about Coyoteclaw that, undeniably, held his attention. Even now, the handsome warrior craned his neck slightly about, watching the other pretty faces of his Clanmates slip around during the cold, still night. Yet he found that his glowing eyes never wandered, and he found that his mind didn't think about any of the she-cats that passed him and Coyoteclaw by, when, under normal circumstances, it would. But these were clearly not the most normal of circumstances. Hawkcry only thought about the fawn and black cat below him, and when he finally returned his eyes - which glinted with their usual cockiness and malicious luster - to her, the world around him went silent. There was nothing, absolutely nothing, but the two warriors, huddled so near to one another by the Oasis lake's shore with the water gently lapping at their feet.Hawkcry, as he was distracted, couldn't stop his pale blue eyes from widening and ears from pricking and mouth from turning into an "o" with astonishment when Coyoteclaw returned the sweet gesture that he'd pulled on her. As the younger cat delicately licked his uninjured ear, it sent yet another feeling of hot adrenaline and that awful affection running through the warrior's blood stream. He felt his ears grow hot, and allowed his confident grimace to slip away to something more.. kind and earnest. A goofy, yet still troublemaker-like, smile replaced his egotistical one. The muscular, terribly huge warrior could see the confusion and mixed emotions in Coyoteclaw's golden eyes as she pulled away, though not by much, and knew that she could probably see those very conflicted feelings in his own slightly moony gaze.
Hawkcry, once he was able to regain his composure and wipe the kitten-like excitement and shock from his face, meowed, coolly, voice soft as a cooing dove's, "Peculiar," he winked at her then, just for affect. "You just met me and you seem to trust me wholeheartedly.. Are you sure you want to do that, sweet thing? Are you sure you'd like to pledge your allegiance to something that isn't the most.. trustworthy?" The dark brown tabby's grin grew to be more mischievous, and his pale blue eyes sparkled with unsaid words, hidden feelings, and mystery.

Flarepaw sighed in relief and blinked with some appreciation at the patchily-furred tomcat a few paces before her. Though his golden eyes were still wary and cautious when he accepted her apology, Flarepaw couldn't help but detect that she clearly wasn't forgiven. At least not all the way. Something about the way Larkpelt spoke made her assume that her rudeness was not something to be fully forgotten, and that made her feel a little nervous. Cats could be unpredictable at times, especially when they were harboring a grudge or two, and though she doubted the warrior would never do something like, say, attack her, the irrational thought did cross her mind. The last thing she wanted was to be a victim to Larkpelt.. Too often, she'd seen cats like Hawkcry or Waspclaw give in to their hate and tirade for hours or assault loners that had done nothing wrong. She didn't want poor, skinny Larkpelt to end up like those muscular tabbies who always seemed to be scrounging for a fight.. for blood to be spilled at their feet. Shuddering a little - Flarepaw hoped that the ripples that shot across her spine weren't apparent, as the wind was blowing pretty strong - the black cat meowed, as calmly and fearlessly as she could manage, "I'm glad to hear that I've ben forgiven.. Thank you, Larkpelt. Enjoy the rest of your evening." But even as she said the words, the warrior was taking his leave. He bounded off to the fresh-kill pile without another word, and picked up one of his still-warm mice. This seemed to end their brief encounter altogether, and the apprentice was grateful that the white and brown tom had left when he had.
Dipping her head in a polite gesture of departure and respect, the angular, long-legged female, too quickly and suddenly, wheeled about and trotted back to her nearly-skinned eaglet. She reached her spot, sliding into the darkness and turning a couple of times in the grass thicket to get comfy, before settling down at last with the eaglet at her small paws. She pulled the pathetic-looking creature closer and plucked, absentmindedly, the last of its feathers away with both her white claws and curved incisors. The speckled feathers, which were beginning to drift off in the wind, Flarepaw realized, would make a nice addition to her already-cozy nest. With her long, thin, black tail, she scooped up as many of the feathers as she could and drew them close to her so that they wouldn't try to flee once more.
Then, she sunk her teeth into the eaglet, and began to, promptly and rather grossly, tear it apart with noisy snorting noises, grunts, and moans of satisification as the meat slid down her throat and into her belly. Blood, delicious eaglet blood, welled in her jaws and turned her pale claws a ghastly pinkish color as it ran between her toes and down her whiskers. Flarepaw, as she ate, did everything she could to avoid meeting Larkpelt's eye, who was painstakingly close by. The fact that the warrior that she'd only just bickered with being so close bothered her, though she didn't let it show as she continued to dine - or, rather, relentlessly attack the eaglet.

Scorchstar, still in a pleasant and more chipper mood than usual because of the apprentice's uncharacteristic excitement at his proposition, watching the worn out tom pad off. He meowed one last farewell to him, and, just when he thought he could relax for a bit and think in silence, he turned about and found Troutsplash. He faintly remembered seeing the deputy-to-be sitting off to the side, watching the leader and the apprentice talk, and felt quilt about not talking to him earlier. StarClan knows how long the patient feline had been sitting there, awaiting the tall tabby's attention. He meowed, emerald eyes losing a bit of their gown when he saw the nervousness in the warrior's gaze, growing a little concerned, "Good evening, Troutsplash," The orange tabby's eyes rover over the grey-brown tabby, and his head tilted to the side a little. What had he sent the tom out to do again? Oh. Oh, yes, catch that stupid rogue that had stolen a rat from the fresh-kill pile around dawn... With all the chaos of today, Scorchstar had honestly forgotten the warrior's task, yet tried to cover up his brief bit of confusion. "Sorry to keep you waiting. You didn't complete your task, you say? No bother, really." He twitched his whiskers and lifted a skinny paw, waving it in the air nonchalantly as he spoke. "Rogues getting away with things isn't very uncommon, as you know... If the trader dares to come back, and I doubt it will, because it knows you and the patrol were looking for it, we'll give it a few wounds across the snout to remember us by. But, if you didn't catch the trespasser, I certainly won't punish you for your efforts. I'm sure you pursued the rogue with all you had, but if it got away, I won't lose sleep over it, and neither should you."
He's almost.. frightened of me. I can't have that. Troutsplash and I have known each other since we were kittens, and though we weren't the closest of friends, surely he knows that he can trust his own leader with not flipping out on him for making one simple mistake? The massive, thin tomcat thought, mulling over Troustplash.
He continued, after pausing for a moment to recollect his thoughts and focus on the subject of this other individual that the patrol had dragged in. Another rogue? Of course. The bat-eared leader should've known. Scorchstar licked his lips and narrowed his eyes, still trying to keep his voice light when he continued, "I wouldn't mind at all. I'm keen to meet our newest visitor." His emerald gaze slid upward, slowly, drifting from the warrior's face to the nearly-pitch-black sky above. "But we need to make it quick."

Noeyes' ears sensitive ears pricked and stood erect when she heard someone else pad up to her and inquire if she could stick around to hear the elder's tale. Quickly, the Russian blue distinguished her voice to be feminine, and could easily guess who the kind cat was. She rasped, "Quailfeather? Is that you, my dear? Oh, no bother! Of course you can listen in.. Today's tale is one, of course, of adventure, but also.." Her voice trailed off a bit and her brow furrowed and her whiskers began to tremble. "One of sadness and tragedy.."But soon enough she was back to her bubbly self and was happy again, excited to begin her story. "Ready, you two? Settle down, because it's a long one!"
The elderly female took a great, deep breath before beginning her lament on one of the most complicated and confusing warriors that DesertClan had ever known: Jackalhowl. "Now, this was a long, long time ago.. About.. how many moons was it again?" Noeyes paused and thought, scrunching up her nose and frowning before continuing, her voice upbeat, "Oh, yes, about thirty moons ago - Quailfeather, you may remember this tale, by the way, hun - there were once two brothers: Jackalpaw and Grasspaw. You both of course are familiar with Jackalhowl, but, haven't probably heard of his brother. Now, I don't mean to be a gossip, and I surely don't mean to hurt good old Jackalhowl's feelings, but.. this story is on his relationship with his brother before he.. passed on and left this world, if you know what I mean." Noeyes paused then, head twisting from Quailfeather and Silverkit expectantly, wanting some commentary on how she was telling her tale to them. She thought she as doing very well at keeping the story mysterious and enticing and full of suspense, and, just for effect, The Russian blue paused and waited for some appreciative feedback.

"As do I," Jackalhowl meowed, thoughtfully, as he, not daring to meet Mossleap's eye, looked down at his massive feet, which were shifting and shuffling with his usual nerves. He noticed the way she was watching him, and that sacred him.. The silver tabby, he could see out of his peripheral vision, had a curious look on her face, like she sensed some sort of secret, but didn't want to press him about it. What does she see in me? Did I say something wrong? Maybe she doesn't quite agree with my choices on who should become deputy.. Yeah, I hope that's it, Jackalhowl thought as he met her gaze once before quickly looking down again, awkwardly. The main coon then added, trying to ignore her green stare, since his end of the conversation wad dying fast, "Scorchstar has led us through many things, and he has always done DesertClan justice. Whomever he chooses will make a fine deputy, I'm sure of that." He trailed off when he noticed that Mossleap's gaze was no longer on him, but on the bright, twinkling, collection of stars high above their heads. The distant orbs of light danced across the black, slightly purple-streaked sky. Jackalhowl even thought he saw a shooting star blaze, elegant and fast, across the sky, but it was so quick that the warrior thought he'd imagined it altogether. The brute listened absently as Mossleap talked about the stars and how beautiful they were, and nodded his head a few times just to portray that he was listening when he really wasn't. He was lost in an alternate world as he stared, yellow-green eyes as huge as a burrowing owl's at the wonders of the heavens.
When he heard Mossleap get up and shift around, though, his wide eyes were ripped from the masterpiece above him and were focused on her. Now that he wasn't staring at the stars, he wasn't so distracted so he finally, meowed, "It always is. We're very blessed to live out here, where the skies are not interrupted by trees and the like." He blinked, startled by his sudden urge to share to Mossleap his love for his home and for the sky and the wonders all about him.

The bony rogue could literally see the blue-grey cat's gears whirring and twisting and deciphering Ant's words in that pretty little head of hers.. The way the slightly older female's eyes rover over Ant so hesitantly and warily and indecisively was almost amusing to the skinny, bedraggled creature that had dared reveal herself to the DesertClan cat. First there was astonishment and mortification in her green eyes, then a little hint of ire, then suspicion and confusion. The she-cat's inability to decide how to respond made a little purr gurgle in the Abyssinian cat's throat, and she waved her whip-like, abnormally long tail through the cold, crisp nighttime air just to symbolize this amusement.Up close, Ant knew she'd been correct about this cat's pretty looks. The blue-grey feline was even more gorgeous up close, much as the rogue hated to admit that so suddenly in the back of her mind. Her fur, awfully unlike Ant's, was smooth and matted down - hardly a hair stuck out of place, while the russet-brown, dusty female's pelt was sticking every which way and her whiskers were mussed. Ant perceived herself to be a total mess, while the blue-grey, green-eyed cat just a mouse-length before her resembled a desert flower: innocent, sweet, and seemingly perfect. Though.. maybe not so perfect. The rogue had seen the cat's posture when she'd prayed, had heard the grief in her small, shaky voice when she'd mumbled to some fictional ancestors of hers. She had even glimpsed, among the wild flurry of emotions in the Clan feline's widened eyes, something dark and formidable. Almost as if she was haunted by something.. or someone. Then again, every cat had their secrets to hide and their inner demons to battle. Who was Ant to judge?
They regarded each other for a while longer, sizing one another up, though they both, clearly, didn't want a late night fight. The rogue was beginning to muster up a response, when the female, who introduced herself to be Rainwhisper, spoke at long last. Ant had to admit, though.. Rainwhisper's voice didn't sound as insecure and pathetic as she'd thought it would. It had an aura of confidence in it.. Was the DesertClan cat trying out Ant's mannerisms of speaking and trying to arm herself with honey-soaked words and soft, cooing purrs? The nerve! But there was, in fact, one thing that the Abyssinian noticed above all about Rainwhisper. Those inner demons that the feline had seen struggling in those gleaming, thoughtful eyes of hers? They had disappeared.
Quickly, the parched, starving, and bone-tired rogue shot back a retort. Her voice dropped a little bit of its sugariness, as she'd picked up on Rainwhisper's change in mood and voice and intended to mirror it. Her mew now held more friendliness and playfulness rather than shyness when she said, "Ah, never met an ant you ever liked, eh?.." Ant, pressuring Rainwhisper a little bit, then paused and leaned closer, diminishing the gap between them at an almost inappropriate speed. The rogue, audacious still, drew herself up onto her tiptoes and struck her tail through the air once more. She widened her eyes even more than she thought possible, and they did their special little thing that truly enraptured all: they glowed. They pulsated and vibrated like little living beings that were inhabited her skull, and, as Ant continued, the brighter those golden orbs grew, "Maybe, just maybe, I can change that."
She allowed a small, peculiarly wicked and crooked smile to inch across her maw then, and leaned back just a tad, sweeping on, "Future, honey? Future, indeed. I'll expect to see you again.. and, oh, I'll keep seeing you until you've changed your mind about the little ol' insect I was named after.. Besides, who ever said I was spying? 'Spying' is a rather inclusive and subjective word, isn't it?"
