Stormheart was still worried about the she-cat. She always seemed so sweet and optimistic, but now she seemed rather worried. The grey-and-white tom nodded a little but chose to say nothing as she changed the subject completely. His whiskers twitched in thought. A dawn patrol to the borders was what he needed to get his mind off everything that has been happening. "I would love to come with you Mothblaze," he purred affectionately, "Should I wake up Beechpaw? Or would you rather just the two of us go?" Stormheart hadn't seen his timid apprentice yet, but he wouldn't mind bringing her along.

indentlittlekit smiled. "thanks!" as usual, his small bites were delicate, taking a bite, chewing it, swallowing it, pausing and repeat. he carried on like this, until ivykit unintentionally nudged him a little. hoping his mother wouldn't see, he nudged back, sending her in the direction of tidesong. he giggled a little, and mewed, "nobody nudges me and gets away with it!"
indenthe looked up to tidesong, stopping his eating for a moment. "is it true?" her words mesmerised him. "that starclan is looking after us? woah, we haven't even met them and they still love us! not that we don't love them, of course.." littlekit shuffled his front paws awkwardly. "anyway, who's going to be the new leader? i bet it's going to be dovestep!" abandoning the rest of the vole completely, he sat down beside where his mother lay. "i'll protect you!" he promised her, and added, "nobody will hurt you when i'm around!"

indentoakwhisker jumped a little at the sound of his name, and looked up to see lilystem. he smiled sadly, and mewed hoarsely, "ah, lilystem. how can i help you this morning?" as if he hadn't guessed. it would be about froststar, as he knew the calico she-cat and the big white tom were good friends. quickly, he ran through the herbs he would need if that was the case. a poppy seed or two if she can't sleep, lavender to calm her down if she needs it.. i have thyme, too, so that will do.
indentoakwhisker saw lilystem looking rather stressed, so he rested her tail on her shoulder briefly. "we'll survive. i'm heading to the dragon cave tonight, so i'll leave somebody - maybe tidesong - in charge of camp. we can do this, lilystem, i have faith in us." he closed his eyes, and thought, dragon cave. will i see rosepaw? memories of his little sister running wild made him smile lightly, thinking about when she caught her first mouse. "see! i told you i'd win!" she told him, holding it up rather smugly. "yes, because i'm the medicine cat apprentice, dumbo!" despite his words, oakwhisker, who was then oakpaw, give his sister an affectionate lick. "well done."
indentrealising he had been staring into nothingness, he looked back up and lilystem again. "do you want lavender or poppy seeds? lavender will calm you, if you're panicking."

Lightningstrike gave up on sleeping, after much re-positioning. He had been awake since before dawn,
and hadn't managed to fall alseep since that time. He parted his jaws in a wide yawn and got on his
silent paws, emerging out into the chilling clearing. By the scent of the air, rain would most likely come.
Mouse-dung. I've always disliked rain. He shook his head as a dry leaf drifted down and landed
on his face. Never mind rain. Leaf-fall in general.
Lightningstrike stole a glance about the leaf-strewn camp, spotting Stormheart and Mothblaze conversing
in the center of the camp, and Dawnflight near the outskirts of the inner territory. I hope a new leader
is chosen
soon. Without hunting patrols and the like, we'll never get enough prey, and the last of it
will run low. But I wonder who will be chosen? Hopefully Oakwhisker will tell StarClan's choice soon.

Lightningstrike remembered Froststar's and Russetfall's deaths. Oh StarClan, I hope that doesnt happen
again to us..

not e v e r y o n e is who you t h i n k they are

Dawnflight lay on the outskirts of the camp, lost in deep thought, as she usually was found.
The deaths of Froststar and Russetfall still bothered her, hanging in her mind, for days on end.
Leaves fell around her and she gave a small shiver as a cold wind buffeted her ruddy-colored
coat. Her train of thought still hung around their bloodied bodies. She gave a small shudder.
I hope I stop thinking this. But it's such a tragedy. It's hard to get such things out of your
mind when it's all it can think about..

She got to her paws, grooming out the moss and leaves that still clung in her coat. She padded
towards the direction of the freshkill pile, picking out a mouse and taking small bites. As soon as
she finished, Dawnflight then stepped out of the camp and into the outer territory, hoping a walk
would ease her troubled thoughts.

Ashpaw noted the silhouette of his mentor in the mouth of the medicine cat's den. He debated whether or not to approach, fearing the tom may be deep in thought and Ashpaw would disturb him. He flicked his attention towards the thin she-cat who stole the silence, nearing Oakwhisker delicately. He couldn't quite make out what they were murmuring about, though he didn't care much as it wasn't his business. Blizzardheart was the next to speak and Ashpaw was suddenly overwhelmed by the rush of cats wanting to speak with his mentor. He lifted himself and trotted forward the few paces that separated himself and the pair at the opening of the den.
"Pardon," Ashpaw dipped his head curtly so not to disrupt the group so abruptly, "We should call a clan meeting." Ashpaw told Oakwhisker delicately, "I assume everyone in the clan wants news of who StarClan is going to choose for the new leader and we'll have to let them all know that you'll be visiting the dragon cave to consult them." Ashpaw explained in a hushed tone, hoping his mentor didn't see his words as demanding..
Ashpaw shuffled his paws in the dust among the floor of the medicine cat's den. He watched the dirt move delicately beneath his paws as he immersed himself in the thought of StarClan. Despite his rank as a medicine cat in training, the tom had never received a dream from the clan's ancestors. Maybe this was because he had no ancestors running among the fallen clan but he believed it was because he wasn't a true clan cat. Oakwhisker had always been supportive of his path, telling him that StarClan comes with time, but Ashpaw's mind was set different and he could feel that who ever may be up in the sky watching over their clan had their gaze fixated elsewhere.

Lilystem

Lilystem could tell from the medicine cat's hoarse meow that he too was mourning the loss of FrostStar. Still, she was relieved that he would go see StarClan soon and find the clan a new leader. Lilystem shivered as Oakwhisker's tail lightly and quickly rested on her back. She knew he was trying to be comforting, but some things just didn't work for her. She finally took a breath before talking to Oakwhisker. "I'm really tired, but I just can't sleep." She told the tom nervously. She hoped he wouldn't laugh because she was making a fuss over something that couldn't kill her. She sighed and met the tom's eyes. She nodded at Ashpaw as he approached. Then she turned back to the medicine cat. "I could always just come back layer if now is inconvenient." She suggested, slightly worried. For some reason she seat down after she had said this. She didn't know why. She shouldn't have been making herself comfortable, especially since she was in an almost akward situation. She made her mind in the comfy pose she was in. "I think I'll just take a poppy seed."

Tidesong smiled at the exchange between Dovestep and her kits. She adored the way Dovestep treated her troublesome little kits though knew she'd never be able to handle it herself. She enjoyed training, not raising. Tidesong hoped not to cut in to their friendly banter as she spoke, responding cooly to Dovestep's remarks about the clan's lack of authority.
"They're just not used to having no one to tell them what to do," Tidesong purred, "Independence isn't a trait that's capitalized in clan life." She added. This wasn't a bad thing of course, she enjoyed the closeness of all of it, though independence and free thinking was lacking under the warrior code.
Tidesong was taken aback by Littlekit's question about StarClan. Unsure of what to say, Tidesong nodded with a fake smile plastered on her face, though she knew the little kit wouldn't be able to see through it, "They're always watching you." She mewed gently to him. She sunk to his level for a moment, crouching with her chest to the mossy flooring of the den, "Your father's up there with them, cheering for you every moment." Tidesong brought her tongue soothingly over Littlekit's head as she brought herself back to her usual stature and turned to address Dovestep's question about help for the day. Tidesong let her gaze wander back to the clearing for a moment to scan the fresh-kill pile.
"I'll organize a hunting patrol. You can come with us if you'd like to stretch your legs." Tidesong invited her, a pleasant smile following the invitation, "I can let Blizzardheart watch over the kits for the time being." The she-cat got to her paws and began to exit for the clearing.
"I'll gather a few more warriors before we head out, you can meet me by the entrance if you'd like to come." Tidesong nodded to her politely before vanishing into the light of camp. She scanned the clearing, cats gathered and chattering to one another about this and that. She felt a tinge of annoyance in her heart. Did no one make note of the low fresh-kill? How about the bitter cold nipping in the air? Leaf-bare was coming and no cat was putting an effort forth to keep them safe. They cared so much about the protection of one another in clan life though without a cat to lead them, their safety was out of the question. She only hoped Oakwhisker would consult StarClan soon for their new authority figure as it seemed IceClan would fall apart without one.

indentoakwhisker smiled softly at ashpaw, pleased with how his apprentice's thoughts were headed. "yes, i will, once i have spare time on my paws..." trying his best to lighten the mood, he rolled his eyes at the she-cats with a small chuckle. "i'm proud with you, ashpaw, i hope you know that." having a sudden change of plan, he narrowed his eyes, and turned to lilystem. "hold on. i'll come to you straight after. i promise." then he strolled up to the high rock unexpectedly. "let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the great rock for a clan meeting!" it felt strange to oakwhisker - almost as if he was disrespecting the ancient rocks where the leaders called the clan meetings each moon or so. briefly, he ran through what he was going to say. we're strong despite everything... dragon cave... the gatherin- the gathering! he bit his lip as he realised they might not have a leader by full moon, nevermind a deputy! he groaned and looked at the ground, mind spinning. i'd have to pick the cats myself - and carefully. the young medicine cat gritted his teeth, before looking up at the cats already gathering beneath him, and he pushed it to the back of his mind for now. oakwhisker sighed softly, before reminding himself that he was going to talk to starclan later on. taking a deep breath, he took a step forward, waiting patiently for the rest of the cats to join.

Ivykit never let the smile fade as her mother returned her excited purrs. Apprenticeship was just a moon away and the she-kit had never wanted something to come faster in her entire life. She let out a gentle giggle as her mother spoke and she nuzzled close to her, pulling away as Tidesong stole her mother's attention. She watched the two she-cats converse about lack of authority in the clan though the situation didn't bother her. IceClan had always been strong and after so many losses, something good must have been around the corner.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a tedious shove from her brother. Ivykit skidded across the floor of the nursery, her paws flying back over her head as she let out a startled squeak, Littlekit standing proudly a length away. Ivykit frowned, untangling her body from it's awkward position and standing a few lengths away from Littlekit, not bothering to retaliate. Despite her current annoyance, she didn't want to hurt her brother by fighting back. She knew he'd be angry by this concept though Ivykit believed herself superior and wouldn't want to hurt the feelings of her brother, or hurt him physically for that matter if she did choose to reciprocate the move.

Tidesong changed her course of action as Oakwhisker's yowl was heard across the camp. She flicked her attention in the direction of the tom who stood before the clan. She smiled, finally satisfied that someone had decided to take authority. She quite enjoyed the tom, especially his sense of logic and his well rounded mind. She spotted Ashpaw pad into the clearing, on Oakwhisker's heals as he sat himself beside his mentor in silence. She had lots of words for the tom that she'd keep to herself. She wondered why he always reeked of two-legs and why his fur was matted with dew each morning. Why he was always out of breath as he exited the medicine cat's den in the early hours. She questioned his loyalty completely, mainly because of his young age and history as a kittypet, but she knew she had no room to judge as she wasn't of clan blood either. The only difference between she and Ashpaw that she saw what that Tidesong was undoubtably loyal.
Tidesong padded closer to the head of camp, her eyes on Oakwhisker as she approached. She sat with silence on the outskirts of the group, making no motion to sit any closer as she knew his voice would reach here and she wouldn't be disturbed by the conversation of others. She listened to the ripple of mews around the clan hush to a quiet whisper as Oakwhisker began his meeting.

Ashpaw nodded at Oakwhisker's cool tone and watched his mentor's demeanor as he spoke to each of the she-cats before him. He not only studied the tom's practice though frequently observed his communication skills and the way he treated each clan member in order to learn how he should treat others as well. Medicine cats were known for their stereotypical shyness and cool attitude towards most situation, which Ashpaw attempted to mimic in it's entirety, despite the fact he wasn't much for being charming and was much more awkward than you'd expect.
Ashpaw was taken aback by Oakwhisker's words, nodding graciously at the tom's praise, "Thank you, Oakwhisker." He kept himself collected and as his mentor turned to begin the meeting, Ashpaw let the smile slip across his muzzle. It's all he wanted from his mentor, the word that he was truly proud of him. Maybe it was enough to make the tom fully commit to his clan lifestyle, but for now Ashpaw could hardly release his grasp on his life as a kittypet.
The small apprentice dipped his head politely to Lilystem and Blizzardheart who were gathered at the mouth of the den, padding past them on his mentor's heels as the two headed towards the high rock. Ashpaw said nothing though he could feel the eyes of each of the clan cats on his pelt, burning deeply into him. They made him uncomfortable to say the least and he feared they would never fully accept him as one of them, but he would never let them know that. The tom came to sit beneath the rock at the head of the clan, listening to Oakwhisker's refreshing voice ring throughout the camp to call IceClan together.
