Tidesong lay silently in her nest in the warrior's den. Sleep hadn't come that night and rather she listened to the obsessive chirping of crickets. She had grown to hate the sound over the past few hours, mocking their cries in her head. She had been kept up that night by her thoughts, her mind never quieting and still she couldn't exactly pinpoint what was was thinking about. Everyone was dead- or so it seemed in her head. Their leader, their deputy, several warriors. And what could they do other than sit back and wait for their next clan mate to fall? She had come here to find a new sanctuary- a new family- and they were falling away like sand through her paws. Tidesong recalled the day she arrived at camp, Froststar welcoming her with his gentle purrs and reassuring smile and she remembered feeling at home even in a place as foreign as IceClan at the time. She had never seen his body and she couldn't help but wonder whether that was a good or bad thing. On one hand she didn't get her final look at the tom she saw as a father but on the other, the only memories she had of him were of him in his strongest times. Never a frail, lifeless body, on the floor of the woods.

The crickets carefully faded, replaced with the frantic cries of birds in the early morning light and she had to admit she was relieved, despite the fact the birds were annoying as well. She could hear the warriors in the den shifting around her, ready to begin their day. She tried to speculate what the point was. Why even get out of her nest today? There was no one to tell her she couldn't sleep this morning- or at least no one of that authority. She rolled to her other side, her eyes now faced with the mouth of the warrior's den, which was beginning to brighten. She could see the bright outlines of her clanmates in the den surrounding her though she made no effort to look at them longer than a second. No matter how hard she tried not to admit it, the she-cat was suffering, but you wouldn't hear those words fall out of her muzzle.
The scent of rain wafted in from the camp, the air damp and cool. She welcomed the rain these days. Growing up in a dry place, the rain was a change and she adored the new feeling. It helped her almost forget about home, which is what she strived to do.

Finally deciding to get up, Tidesong gathered herself and with an exhausted moan, got to her paws. She picked her way carefully to the front of the den and exited into the chill of leaf-fall. The camp was crawling slowly into it's morning, however she understood why everyone might be slow. She knew it wasn't just her who was grieving Froststar. He was a leader beloved by all and now faced without his guidance, IceClan was in shambles.
Her gaze flickered towards the nursery, her mind turning to Dovestep, a queen now raising three kits without a mate. Dovestep and Russetfall, IceClan's former deputy, had been raising three lovely kits together until only a few moons ago when the tom when missing. His body was never recovered though his blood was spattered for miles around the camp.
Tidesong padded towards the fresh-kill pile, which was running low as well. Motivation in the clan was clearly at an all time low. She picked a fat vole off the top and carried it in her jaws towards the nursery.
Poking her head in the nursery, the light was dim and the comforting scent of milk hung low in the air. She enjoyed the pleasant warmth of the den, entering cautiously so not to wake any of the kits. She placed the vole carefully beside Dovestep, not wanting to wake the queen, though wanting to make sure she was fed before the rest of the warriors picked at the fresh-kill pile.

The moon was still dwindling in the sky as Ashpaw exited camp. Yes, he knew it was forbidden for apprentices to leave alone though he assumed if he wasn't caught, no rules would be considered broken. Added with the fact IceClan now had no leader to enforce them in the first place. The young tom rounded the back of the medicine cat's den, slinking out a hole in the perimeter of camp and allowing the crisp night air to splash against his pelt as he made it into the woods. He knew exactly where he was going this morning as he'd been there many times. Ashpaw knew what he did was wrong. This wasn't going to stop him. Of course he was a loyal clan cat, he'd always tried to be, still letting go of his past when he was so young was a difficult task for him. Sometimes he missed the comfort of dry floors inside the two-leg nest. Maybe he disliked the collar with the little bell he had worn but he would gladly wear it if it meant he was given food. His two-legs still seemed hopeful of his return, leaving out all sorts of food along the fence to their nest and anticipating Ashpaw's return. He knew he couldn't go back.

Ashpaw broke through the tree line, the fox field before him. He studied a deer family in the open field, strolling together in silence in the cool night air. Ashpaw remained in his position, not wanting to startle the gentle creatures, and as soon as they'd gone he took off at a sprint across the field. The kitten was a blur, racing past the IceClan border and beyond the fox field. He doubted clan cats had come this way before because he'd never seen them as a young kit and only until he traveled deep into the wood did he know of their existence. He remembered how fearful they were. Clan cats had a certain uneasiness and distrust about them that couldn't be matched and the fear on their pelts as soon as they heard the little blue bell on his collar was unforgettable. Not all two-legs were the blood thirsty monsters clan cats made them out to be, Ashpaw only needed to pretend they were to keep his place.
A fence stood up ahead and Ashpaw remained a few lengths away, staring at it longingly. He approached with caution, trusting his two-legs were asleep and wouldn't come to catch him. He leapt upon the fence beam and sure enough, a small dish of his kithood cat food was place upon it. He began to enjoy the snack, listening to it crunch between his teeth.

He could hear birds calling in the distance and the pale morning light began to envelop IceClan territory. He enjoyed the silence as he sat upon the fence, nibbling at his food. Abruptly, a light flickered on in the two-leg nest beyond the fence. Ashpaw's attention turned in an instant before bounding down onto the wet grass below, careful to snatch some catnip from the base of the fence where he knew his two-legs had begun planting it in hope of attraction but he found this funny as it only aided his integration into IceClan. The tom scampered back through the territory, his jaws full of the pungent scent of catnip as he headed home at a fast pace. The sun began to awaken, illuminating the woods surrounding him as he continued home, the camp in sight.
Before he knew it he had managed to make his way back into the medicine cat's den, catnip still in his jaws as he entered. He noticed Oakwhisker there as well, though made no motion to acknowledge him so he didn't question why he was awake. Ashpaw dropped the catnip softly into their herb stock. He missed his home but there was nothing he enjoyed more than working as a medicine cat.

Ivykit watched the ball of moss roll back and forth between her paws against the floor of the nursery. Her eyes flicked back and forth, paws moving delicately and she batted at it. She had been up before the sun, listening to the crickets as they fell silent with the coming rays of light. A gentle glow grew gradually at the mouth of the nursery and she watched the light move inwards, illuminating the cats sleeping softly among the moss. She could feel her mother's body pressed against her own, her tender breath giving Ivykit a pleasant feeling as she inhaled her scent. Owlkit was only a little ways away from her as well as her second brother, Littlekit. She studied the two with curious eyes, noticing the way each of their hairs rose and fell with their breathing.
She noticed the way Littlekit's paws lay as he slept. He was such an elegant kitten, even when he wasn't conscious. She could easily note his feminine personality just from the way he positioned his body as he slept, his breathing gentle. Owlkit lay close to her as well, much larger than Littlekit, he took up a lot more room. She watched his whiskers twitch as he slept, examining the movement of his unconscious facial expressions.

Ivykit suddenly struck out with her leg, aiming for Owlkit's head to awaken him, "Owlkit!" She hissed in a hushed manner, "Owlkit!" She repeated, slightly louder, shifting her attention to her mother who she hoped not to disturb. The she-kit hopped to her paws, tossing her ball of moss a few mouse-lengths away as she did so. She padded deftly towards her brother, shifting passed Littlekit so not to rouse him from his slumber. She placed two paws upon Owlkit's shoulder, shaking his body rapidly.
"Wake up you lazy mouse!" Ivykit whispered into his ear playfully, stepped a few lengths back and hoping her shaking had done the job.
She had always woken Owlkit before Littlekit. She saw Littlekit as much more fragile and feared waking him would upset him. Waking Owlkit was a different story. Whether it be their daily wrestles or games in the nursery, Owlkit could put up with a little rough housing and especially from Ivykit. She also enjoyed bugging him frequently, attempting to get a rise out of him in a playful sense. She sat back, watching Owlkit and hoping for any sort of movement from her brother.

indentmothblaze opened her eyes, feeling refreshed after a good night's sleep. she rolled onto her back, a small smile on her face, happiness surging through her. it had been the second night in a row that she had saw mousekit, kestrelkit and jaykit in her dreams, her deceased brothers. as kits, they had been close in the three moons that they had together, but they all knew that there was something wrong with mousekit. before they could work it out, he was gone forever, and mothblaze and oakwhisker were never to see his little smile again.
indenttonight she saw kestrelkit, the handsome black and white tom of the litter. he would have grown to be such a wonderful, brave warrior - and possibly the leader of iceclan. mothblaze sighed as she thought of her little brother, he was so wise in starclan! so gentle and strong, even for a kit. they were talking about froststar, and his final moments in the forest. the empathetic tom had been fighting for iceclan, but had been taken out along with their deputy and a few warriors. grief washed over mothblaze at the realization froststar would never come back, and the last surviving cats of iceclan had no leader or deputy - for now.
indentshaking out her fur to clear her mind, she padded out of the warriors' den to the center of camp, looking for someone to have a quick chat with. still unsure if she should tell anyone, mothblaze lay on her belly beside the fresh-kill pile, and glanced around for somebody to talk to. she caught a glimpse of ashpaw sneaking into the medicine den rather suspiciously, but the golden warrior thought nothing of it. instead, she fluffed up her fur, and continued looking for somebody to talk to.

indentlittlekit woke up to a soft, furry snake on his nose. he sighed, then sneezed, and stood up, and whispered, "owlkit! you've got to stop sleeping with your tail out. honestly!" he laughed softly to himself, sitting down at the wall of the nursery. only then did he realise that ivykit was awake, and he whispered softly, "morning." the five moon old kit saw what his litter sister was trying to do, and decided to copy owlkit. as in by tickling him with his tail.
indentthe little cinnamon tabby's short tail hovered over his brother's nose, and it dropped directly on top, twitching to add to the, 'wake up now please, thank you' vibe. littlekit's method of waking cats was definitely much different from ivykit's, who was meanwhile nudging him roughly. "owlkit!" he whispered playfully. "i'll be the mouse and you be the badger. can't catch me!"
indenthe ran the the right of the den, seeing if owlkit would try to get him then. it felt more damp there - rain had probably got through the weaker side of the nursery. he glanced at his mother and saw her murmuring something to tidesong. littlekit waved his stumpy tail in greeting - he had always loved getting visitors, even if it wasn't for him. at that moment he saw the vole, and his belly rumbled an almighty rumble. the little brown kit padded slowly to his mother, licked her cheek in greeting, and mewed, "can i get a bit? i'm starving!"

indentoakwhisker opened one eye to sunlight beaming on his face, again. he had been up for hours, unable to fall asleep. the wise, young medicine cat had put off from taking some sleeping herbs, as he knew they were vital in the cold seasons. thinking of the weather, oakwhisker poked his head out of the medicine den, feeling a chilly wind blow through his fur. he shivered softly, completely forgetting what the cold felt like. he whipped back in, fluffing out his bushy, chocolate fur. he glanced at his apprentice, ashpaw, sleeping soundly beside him, his chest rising and descending softly.
indentcareful not to wake him, he padded towards the herb stores, wanting to make sure they had enough catmint - just to be sure. leaf-fall brings leafbare; leafbare brings cold weather, cold weather brings greencough. that was what his mentor, quailfeather, had told him, and he had always recited it each leaf-fall and leafbare.
indentthis was his first year without quailfeather, which was hard. his mentor had been a grouchy old tom, but was affectionate and caring at heart, and would sacrifice anything for his clan. he had had a mysterious lump in his belly, and without telling oakwhisker, he knew he wouldn't make it. he wouldn't dare tell his apprentice that, not until when it was nearing his last days. quailfeather told oakwhisker to stop looking after him, and to leave him be, for he could see starclan waiting for him. peacefully, he died in his sleep, with oakwhisker right beside him.
indentshaking out his fur, oakwhisker cleared the thoughts of his mentor. yes, he died, but he taught me everything i needed to know. all the safe and dangerous herbs, what to do for queens and greencough... i'll be fine. he headed outside and sat beside the medicine cave, looking out for any cat to have a conversation with. one fact about oakwhisker; he was very sociable. despite him being a little shy and awkward, there was nothing else better than having a quick gossip to someone, which was something he didn't get to do much with quailfeather. it was one of his biggest regrets, since they were very close, but they just didn't have time. when quailfeather was alive, they had their leader and deputy's death, so they didn't get much time alone. however, with ashpaw, oakwhisker feels as if they could talk about anything and everything, without having to stop too much for work. of course, oakwhisker was oblivious to his apprentice waking up and leaving for a while, since he was too busy muttering to himself about the cold weather. he didn't bother checking in on ashpaw either, since he was right beside the entrance, so he assumed he was still asleep.
