Roll says... 6: Tell the truth.
You shuffle your paws, look away, flick your tail and cough - anything to delay the story. One side-glance at Thimble and you look to the fence, waiting for something to come crashing over the side.
Nothing does, though. Thimble only waits with a concerned look. Scat pokes his head out of his hiding spot, ears twitching.
You sigh. "It's a stupid story."
"That's fine-" starts Thimble.
"I mean really stupid," you say. "As in, 'Asterpaw, how can you be so dumb?'."
To your annoyance, this seems to intrigue both of them even more. Scat trots out and sits beside Thimble. You grumble a few ugly words.
"Well, you both know I'm in a Clan," you say. "And in the Clan, I live with my family and friends. It's not uncommon for only one or two kits to make it out of a litter, so I was the only kit that made it past the first day. I was born early in the winter, we were low on food, you know how it is. Pretty standard for our Clan."
Thimble is clearly disturbed, but she nods.
"And since no one else wanted to risk a litter at that time of year, I was the only kit in the nursery for...about a moon and a half, I think. So I played with my mother and my aunt until more kits showed up." You half-smile. "No one really approved of Robincloud hanging around the nursery so much when she didn't have kits, but the three of us were really close for it. Even when I became an apprentice, for the first moon or so, I spent more time with them than I did my mentor. Most warriors are close with their family, but we devoted more time to hanging out together.
"One day, though, my mom got sick, and ended up in the medicine den for two weeks in a really bad state. Robincloud and I were worried, so we helped out when we could. I got herbs for Redstorm, Robincloud hunted and saved the best for mom. Whitestar thought we would start slacking off to make sure she was okay, so he got Redstorm to forbid us to visit her until she was better. I focused on training with Stormwhisker to keep my mind off of things, but Robincloud couldn't stop worrying. She was afraid mom would get worse, especially since we were going through a rough time with prey getting sick.
"Robincloud snuck into the medicine den and gave my mom the best mouse she could find one night. It must have been sick, because mom died pretty shortly thereafter. I mean, so shortly that Robincloud was almost on trial for murdering her sister. Redstorm cleared her name, and everyone apologized, but I...I guess I got caught up in the reaction. I blamed her for my mom's death and I didn't want anything to do with her. Even Whitestar tried to talk me into being kind to her again, but I just..."
You sigh. This next part, in retrospect, is embarrassing.
"Finally, my aunt couldn't take it anymore. She followed me out one day and started pleading for me to forgive her. I turned and ran as far as I could. I just wanted to get away from her. She followed me, though, first begging me to stop so we could talk, then telling me to come back before we got lost. I made a right turn and sprinted, and I didn't even look where I was going, and..."
You stick out your nub of a leg. "Tada."
Thimble looks horrified and grieved. Scat's eyes are bulging.
Told you it was dumb.
It was all my fault, really.
Hey, don't be upset.
Say nothing.
