You stand up slowly with a puff of amusement. "Well, it's a good thing I'm taking you, then."

Thimble's head shoots up. Her eyes are almost as wide as Scat's. "Really?!"

"Sure." You stretch. "You need someone to make sure you don't kill yourself, right? And besides, I need someone else to memorize the directions to the caravan."

At first, it's silent. Then Thimble makes an incredibly high pitched noise and starts jumping all over the yard. Laurel has to roll out of the way as she bounds over him, shouting, "Thank you thank you thank you!" at the top of her lungs. A few cats are laughing inside, and a few more are squinting out of the window, annoyed at being woken up.

You wait patiently until she skitters to a halt in front of you, face distorted in glee, before speaking. "I have today off from feeding Jay. We can talk and prepare until tomorrow morning."

"Eeeeheeheeheeheehee this is gunna be so much fun!" Thimble bounces on her toes.

You glance at Laurel, half-apologetic, half begging for help. He just grins and curls up again. "If you have any questions, come on over again. But I think you guys can sort it out, right?"

You sigh, wave your tail, and follow Thimble, who is already springing around the front of the brick house.

"Thimble-" you start, but she's still squealing and jumping back and forth.

Thimble's enthusiasm was cute, but it could endanger her. I say sternly,"You need to be serious."

"Keep in mind that you do need to be serious," I say as sternly as I can, for Thimble does need to understand the potential danger of such a journey.

"Be a little more serious," you say. "This isn't just a hop over to the next block."

Thimble relents and settles for vibrating excitedly. "I know, I know, but..."

"You haven't been out in the woods," you continue. "We don't have any connections out there keeping us from getting hurt. And food will be harder to find. If we get injured, or chased away, or stuck in a ditch, there's no one to come and save us."

Thimble falls silent. Her eyes look to the ground.

"If you sincerely want to go with me, you have to treat this with sincerity." You watch her, gauging her reaction. "We'll be walking far, for a long time. We'll have to hunt, and search for water, all on our own. So we need to plan things out, and take this seriously. Do you get that?"

"I get that," she mumbles. "I was just excited, that's all."

"You can be excited," you say. "As long as you understand what's happening."

She nods, but she's quiet until the two of you are in her yard.

Scat peeks out from behind the foliage. He seems quite surprised to see you here, but he doesn't say anything until you bring him up to speed.

"Yourmom'sgunnamissyou," he says to Thimble. His expression, though hard to see, makes you think he's said this before.

"I know..." Thimble smiles sadly. "But she can always get another kitten."

Your lip curls on instinct. Any life where a family member can be simply replaced like dry herbs disgusts you. You're glad that you're taking her now.

"An'you?" Scat tilts his head, looking at you. "Arewegood?"

"What do you mean?" You make yourself relax.

His eyes narrow just a fraction, but he only says, "DunnoifIshouldgowithyou. Orifyou'dletme."
