"I was actually wondering something," you say, knowing full well you weren't, but you need to have an excuse to be here.
"Go ahead and ask!" The tom (Laurel, was it?) sits down in a nest, motioning for you to do the same.
You politely take a seat. How soft, you think, as you desperately try to come up with a question. "Um...everyone's been really weird when I talk about your group. They all just stare at me and act like you shouldn't exist, or...be trusted. Is there a reason for that?"
Laurel (you think) shuffles into a resting position, looking sad. "I guess that's just what happens when you don't know much about strangers. Nomads used to be a real big deal, you know - everyone thought they were the bee's knees."
"D-" Oh, no, a history lesson. "Did they now?"
"There was a...a coven, I think it was called." He frowns in concentration, thinking. "It was set up after a while to protect travelers and keep the nomad culture alive, no matter how many of the old folk died. No matter who you were, if you were in the 'family', you had a mark to distinguish you, and you could get into any caravan for a song. Or a story, or whatever. Keeping the culture and history alive was the biggest concern for them, so plenty of cats got the mark. In most places, folklore was more important than food."
Find an excuse to leave.
