It has been 103 years since humanity reached beyond its own solar system and took its place among the other sapient beings. 103 years of relative peace, negotiation and colonization of garden planets. Now, however, human and alien colonies alike have begun to drop off the grid. Any ships sent to investigate have never returned. Something is brewing, and you’re going to have to deal with it.

Welcome to Pariah, a scifi Chose Your Own Adventure! In this, you will play as the newly instated commander of the SS Bogoria, tasked with investigating the reason behind the recent loss of contact with a number of colonial planets. The storyline will be divided into three main acts, with the choices made by the players potentially having severe repercussions later on. This takes heavy inspiration from a number of sources, such as the Mass Effect series and the Firefly-verse, but the aim is to have a completely new story.
In case you are unfamiliar with the CYOA format here on CS, here is how it works. I type up a post, and give you a choice of options. You, the players, each pick an option. A roll which decide which course is taken, unless it is an option of serious importance, in which case there will be a vote. The main storyline and important choices have been decided in advanced, however how we reach those, and how the Commander develops is entirely up to you!

Executive Officer Jesse Hamilton: (UNLOYAL) Your human second-in-command, XO Hamilton is relatively young for her rank, and handles herself with extreme efficiency. Has been in active service for coming up for nine years. NEUTRAL.

Lieutenant-Commander Agrix Atish: (UNLOYAL) Not an awful lot is known about Atish at the moment, other than the fact that the Raski ambassadors insisted he come aboard the Bogoria to assist with the mission. No records about his service in the Raski military beyond a thin, superficial file have been offered to you. NEUTRAL.

Doctor Tzin Huan: Dr. Tzin has served for Unity forces for as long as anyone can remember. He is one of the best in the trade, and he makes sure nobody forgets it. He’s served on the same ship as you for years, and has seen your rise to Commander. FRIENDLY.

Aviator Michael Evans: Your solemn pilot, Michael graduated from flight school top in the class, and appears to be an extremely stoic, if talented, individual. This is only his third year of active duty. NEUTRAL.

Valentina Gutierrez: The Bogoria’s chief mechanic, Valentina’s bubbly and almost ditzy personality hides an able mechanical brain. She’s been a mechanic for years, but only joined the military two years ago. NEUTRAL.



LOYALTY will be awarded upon completion of certain tasks in Act 2. Those without UNLOYAL cannot have their loyalty gained, and will follow you regardless of your actions.
RELATIONSHIP STATUS will change depending on your attitude towards your crewmates and others. If friendship is raised high enough, it may be possible to pursue a romantic relationship with one of your crewmates.

What follows is purely optional reading. As this CYOA will feature many new names, I thought it might be a good idea to put a glossary of sorts. Will be updated as the Commander uncovers more of the Milky Way.

Known Species:

Raski: Hairy, bipedal and massive, the Raski are the alien species most similar to humans, in terms of genetics. This may be hard to see, what with them being covered in a thick layer of fur, being upwards of six foot tall and adorned with some fine horns, claws and fangs, but the Raski homeworld, Valen, is the closest to Earth, and has a relatively similar environment. Raski typically live around 90 Void Years.

Humans: The latest sapient species to reach the galaxy, humans have spread far and fast. In the hundred years they’ve been part of the intergalactic community, humans have managed to change the galaxy’s dynamic completely. Adaptable and successful despite their relatively short lives (they live some 63 Void Years on average), humans have managed to wrangle their way into being one of the major powers. They’ve obtained a large number of colonies and not negligible influence in the Committee.

Prilgun: The oldest still living civilized spacefaring species in the Milky Way, the Prilgun are a long-lived, wise people. With three sexes, ridiculously complex naming systems and penchant for body modifications, the Prilgun seem incredibly different from every other race. They are bipeds, but are covered soft, almost feathery scales and have plated foreheads. Prilgun live up to 500 Void Years, far longer than any other known peoples. Though in theory the Committee provides equal representation, there is no question that the Prilgun are the most important and influential members, and are considered somewhat the leaders of the galaxy.


Known Planets:

Earth: The human homeworld, located in the Sol System. Population of 9 billion, and decreasing. Earth is split into several countries, each with their own independent government, though humans are represented in intergalactic matters by the Unity, which has representatives from all 164 countries. There is approximately a year and a half Earth year to a single Void Year.

Loza: The Prilgun homeplanet is built-up and inescapably urban. Few non-Prilguns ever reach it, not due to hostilities, but rather how completely out of the way it is from everything else. There are no habitable or viable colonies in the surrounding systems, and Loza being able to reach the conditions required for life is considered somewhat of a peculiar anomaly. The Void Year is set to Loza’s orbit.

The Hub: An artificial planet created by the Prilgun, the Hub serves as the centre of the entire intergalactic community. The Committee is stationed here, with embassies for every sapient and civilized species, as well as a trading district, the Intergalactic Force Headquarters, and a residential area that houses some twenty million.

Valen: The Raski homeworld is mostly made up of mountainous, superficially inhospitable territory. The species that inhabit it are well adapted to the freezing temperatures. There is little ocean on the planet, and it is composed of four main landmasses with few islands. The Raski have four tribes each pertaining to the landmass, though these are mostly just kept for tradition, as they have effectively been one large government since before even reaching interspace.
