Well, it can't be that hard to find food, right? Especially around places that dump out food all the time. You make yourself perk up and trot off, sniffing for a source of food.
...
This is insane.
You stand on the sidewalk, gawking at the mass of cats that's almost spilling out of the alley. Some are fighting and pushing each other around, some are trying to sneak to the front of the group, and almost all of them are growling and shouting at each other. A twoleg pops out of a window and roars, but the loners remain unperturbed.
How can there possibly be so many cats? Every single alley you've gone through has had at least one loner in it, and you've been at this for two hours. You haven't come up with anything.
Something in your gut broils at the savageness of these cats. At home, things would be so easily handled. Here...
"There you are."
You flinch and turn around. It's Jay, and she's got four cats with her. All of them are staring at you with unreadable expressions.
Here I am.
I'll pay you, don't worry.
Is there a problem?
What's with the new cronies?

"Is something wrong?" you ask. "I didn't expect that you'd come looking for me so early. Or to...have more cats with you."
"On garbage day, it's best to be in a group," Jay says. She looks completely at ease. "A couple friends wanted in on our dump run."
You narrow your eyes just a little, puzzled.
"Anyway." Jay's tail waves from side to side. "I just wanted to let you know that you're off the hook for tonight."
"Off the-?"
"You surprised me with that crow," Jay says. "Wasn't the freshest food, but it was real meat, and it was just big enough to keep me and my friends going for today. I don't know where you got it, or how, but you earned yourself a night off."
"Oh." You blink. "Thank you."
"Besides-" Jay gives you the smallest smile. "You don't know how to walk these streets on a day like this. Wherever you're sleeping, you should probably go there and stay there until tomorrow. It's gunna get real ugly here."
"It's already pretty ugly," you remark, stepping back to let a pair of cats chase each other down the block, yowling.
Jay's smile twists a little to let you see her right fang. "Uglier."
She jerks her head and pads off, her four friends in tow.
Alright then, what to do now?
Head back to Thimble's.
Go visit Pretty Boy.
Wander around town.
