@ the fragile,
Yeah, I remember that. It wasn't so much where I live because I live in a super liberal arts area but when I went up to the rural parts of the state, people would ask me if I was part of a suicide cult. It's dyed down significantly over the years, thank Cthulhu. Apparently there's still some sort of suicide cult in Minnesota still though? I went up there with my boyfriend and some shopkeeper wouldn't sell something to me because of my mcr spider necklace and my boyfriend said that it wasn't safe to wear mcr stuff in that area because of recent cult activities.

Wow, that's crazy...I didn't know it was still a deal. When the whole rumor first cropped up I was in a really small southern town so of course is spread like wildfire. I would have people stop me in random places in public when I wore my MCR shirts and I clearly remember being in the library once and wearing my wolf MCR shirt and overhearing this lady tell her daughter not to go anywhere near me because I was a part of a cult and an evil person...because of my MCR shirt. I don't know if it just died down or I don't hear about it anymore because I moved to bigger cities. I actually haven't been back to my hometown to find out. I live in the burbs of one of the biggest cities in the US now so people almost never pay any mind to any of my band shirts, although a while ago I was standing in line and had this elderly woman comment behind me "Nine Inch Nails? What's that supposed to mean?" when I had one of my NIN concert shirts on hahah.
I don't even know where the whole thing of MCR being a suicide cult came from anyway...although remembering back it may have struck around the time of the VA Tech shooting and when MCR was blamed for that.

the whole idea of MCR being a suicide cult was never big in the UK. A few people probably thought it, but dare I say, it is more of an American thing...
I suppose it was because people weren't used to that kind of style, so they didn't know what to make of it, especially with the really explicit lyrics in some songs. And there are some strange people in the world so....

tbh I don't know where it came from. I mean, MCR is pretty tame both visually and lyrically compared to a lot of bands/artists, including some pretty popular ones. I mean when I compare them to a lot of my other relatively popular favorite bands' lyrics and imagery - say, NIN for a perfect example - they seem pretty PG-13. They for sure have a dark element but when you compare them to a lot of the goth/industrial scene they are kind of...vanilla. I'm not sure what it is about MCR that made them get singled out as being a "suicide cult"...but then, a lot of rock/alt/metal bands get stupid rumors about them being Satanic/evil/a cult started about them. And the fact they got pretty popular probably made them more of a target them some other contemporaries of their's.
The irony to me is that the band themselves were always so adamantly anti-suicide, especially Gerard, and their music has actually helped a lot of depressed/suicidal people. I guess it might have partly been because they got lumped in with the whole emo scene and a lot of emo music/culture does romanticize suicide and self-harm.
I self harmed pretty bad as a teen and MCR was one of the things that helped me quit.

yeah, that's true, I totally get you, if you analyse it like, deeply, MCR is very PG compared to some dance rap electronic things. In the early days of MCR, I would say they looked a little bit more, idk deathly because of Gee and his red eye makeup, kinda lank hair and white foundation. Maybe it was because of the fact they were one of the first alt/emo bands that sort of came out of the woodworks and people noticed.
Ikr! They were always all for accordance, anti self harm and depression etc, like the video to I'm not okay is really quite uplifting... And they always kinda said that they weren't emo, but they had emo fans so...

Yeah, any time someone tries to call ANY of my favorite groups dark or obscene my first response is usually to tell them to go listen to some gangsta rap. Which I like some of, but MCR seems like sunshine and daisies compared to the lyrics of say, Three 6 Mafia. But for some reason the majority of people seem to like to turn a blind eye to the darker elements of rap or EDM or pretty much anything that isn't rock or metal.
Despite the emo fanbase, I never really considered MCR emo. Emo to me is more like A Day To Remember or Hawthorne Heights. MCR is more pop-punk with some goth, classic rock, and electronic influences. What their genre is varies from album to album really.
Then again what "emo music" is is different for nearly every person you ask.

Ah yes, people definitely still think we're a cult. I just kind of laugh internally at their obvious lack of information. But yeah, with all the makeup and merch I wear, especially MCR stuff (I'm wearing an MCR shirt and matching wristband right now, actually) I get the most horrible death glares from some people. So what if I look different? It doesn't make me evil, and I'm human too, just like they are. But it really is funny how flipped the general view of MCR is, since yes, they actively try to stop suicides and have succeeded on almost uncountable occasions. They helped and still help my boyfriend and I through what ever life throws at us. Onto the genre, I would definitely class MCR as alt/pop punk too. But if you ask some people, pop punk is the same thing as emo, but it depends who you talk to.
