My mum doesn't really approve of me listening to MCR but she'll put up with it. I refuse to play Mama or Dead! around her just in case.
My driving song is Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na because earlier this year I went on some go karts with my friend and I played it and we were having a proper rave XD

At the age of ten, I was able to con my mom into liking mcr because I let her hear some of their calmer songs so she went YEARS thinking mcr was as calm as like Death Cab For Cutie or something. It wasn't until I became an adult that she found out everything she knew about mcr was a lie and she couldn't do a thing about it.
My dad however actually sat down and listened to Bullets and hated it from the start and sold my mcr albums. Then I started to get super into Korn and Avenged Sevenfold and suddenly, my mcr albums reappeared so my dad had to listen to less Korn.

My mom actually hated MCR at first because her first exposure to them was Bullets and she didn't like all the dark/violent imagery. Then when Three Cheers dropped I managed to get her to come around with songs like To The End, I'm Not Okay (I Promise) and You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison. Ever since, she's been a fan and totally cool with me listening to MCR/going to shows/wearing merch. In fact, she was going to go to a concert with me a few years back but they wound up cancelling.

My dad always hated them and loved making fun of me for liking them, I remember he used to say the "MCR" should stand for "many crappy recordings" and not "my chemical romance".

Also, @the fragile, marylin Manson is a scary looking dude with all the makeup so I can get ypthe drift of your parents XD

Yeah, his looks/stage persona really freaked my mom out to the max at first, but after I got her to actually listen to his music she's become something of a fan. My dad still absolutely hates him though. I hid the fact I listened to Manson from him for like 5 years.

Unfortunately I have never been able to get either of them to come around on Nine Inch Nails...and NIN is my favorite musical act in the history of the world.

Ahh yes, the family and the bands. At first I was really hesitant about sharing my music with my parents because I was afraid they wouldn't approve, and I got hopelessly obsessed with bands really quickly, so I really didn't want to limit my listening. But then I found out that my mom is actually a huge punk rock fan too! She has been listening to Fall Out Boy and Green Day since I was little! It was really easy to get her hooked on MCR, BVB, SWS, TDG, 30S2M, and P!@tD!! As for my dad, he's pretty neutral towards MCR and FOB and the like, but he is into NIN and Marylin Manson, so there is certainly hope. I now wear my merch with pride, and listen to my music to my heart's content.

But anyway, which album should I buy next? I just got a bit of birthday money to spend, so.... x3

On the topic of Marilyn Manson, I can't get over his face. He looks like he belongs in an R.L. Stein's haunting hour special.


Now that I'm an adult, and am the caretaker of a nine year old child, I really do see where some parents are coming from when they scorn their kids for listening to mcr. Some concepts in their songs are a little too grown up for younger children but that's not typically what parents are worried about. Parents usually just hear the screaming and can't get passed that. The child I take care of loves Fall Out Boy and Halsey- two of my very favorite artists and I'm proud of her for realizing how great they are. But, she's nine and I don't want her to be listening to violent lyrics about sex and drugs just yet because her comprehension level isn't so good and she might repeat things to her friends or think it's okay because Patrick Stump said so not realizing it's a character in a song talking about turmoil, not necessarily her idol, Patrick Stump. Parents probably hear musicians like Halsey and Fob and think their songs sound a bit haunting but not offensive and let their kids listen to them not noticing that the lyrics may not be suitable for young kids. Personally, I would much rather my kid listened to mcr and not fob. Mcr screams but their lyrics are a lot less harmful.

If you are looking for an mcr album, Bullets is a realllly good one. Frank Iero's first band, Pencey Prep, has a really good album if you don't have that one. It's called "Heartbreak in Stereo" and it is amazing. If you aren't looking for mcr related music, some good new emo albums are "Blurryface" by Twenty One Pilots and "Badlands" by Halsey.

I got into MCR two months after the break up and I was listening to WTTBP on my laptop and my mum actually liked it XD.
But my dad likes Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Muse and others like that and he walked in on me watching Tainted Love by Marilyn Manson and he wasn't bothered.

@ It's Still 2005 To Me...first off, your dad is cool hahah. But as for albums, I would also recommend I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love if you're going to go w/a MCR album. It's a classic and probably my 2nd favorite MCR record. I even named my car in honor of Bullets, haha.

Plus it's seriously under-appreciated by a lot of other fans now that got into the band later on in their career.

I can kind of see where some parents are coming from in some cases, sure. But at the same time, I got into MCR when I was like eleven and listened to all their music, including their darker stuff (in fact, the darker stuff like Headfirst for Halos and Early Sunsets Over Monroeville were my favorite songs at the time), and I was also listening to things like Manson's albums Holy Wood and Portrait of An American Family at that age; and despite many adults in my life thinking this was going to make me become suicidal/depressed/a Satan worshipper when I grew up I think I turned out a relatively normal person. Well okay maybe not but I don't think it was at all from the music I listen to.

I also know a 12 year old irl that listens to Fall Out Boy but isn't allowed to listen to MCR. I actually sat down and listened to some of FOB's stuff with her (I have never been much of a fan) and was left scratching my head at why it was perfectly acceptable to her parents for her to listen to FOB but not MCR. I mean yeah FOB's melodies and overall sound is lighter and more upbeat than MCR but some of their lyrics are super dark.

For some reason talking about this reminded me, I remember around the time The Black Parade dropped their was all this talk in my area of MCR being a suicide cult and I would have random adults stop me and comment on my MCR shirts and how their music promoted suicide. It lasted for like 2-3 months and was super bizarre. But then I lived in a very small town in the bible belt at all so maybe it really wasn't, I dunno. I think it was mostly one church group that got the idea from some British magazine or something.

All this talk about Bullets has made me want to listen to it again...

As a FOB fan myself, I can tell you now, most FOB songs have a deeper meaning such as 7 Minutes In Heaven. First glance it seems to be about women but actually it's about Pete Wentz's suicide attempt. Pete Wentz writes the songs for Fall Out Boy and around 2003-2006 Pete Wentz had bad anxiety and depression. Nobody thought he'd pass 27. If you really do get past the awesome tune and vocals and actually listen to the lyrics and interpret them properly, it can be very dark.

The thing is, my parents like older rock things, I mean both like green day, but they don't like the more recent emo bepands and stuff so idk really.

It seems a lot of us here have the whole band vs parents thing D:

It's funny because I know of quite a few 12-year-olds who should not be listening to what they are listening to yet. The content is way to mature for them! But then again, if you look at the lyrics in most of the hit songs these days... *shudders* Children need to stay away from that stuff...

And thank you guys for your request! I was actually considering Bullets anyway, so I'll totally get it!

But yes, Fall Out Boy is VERY dark. They may have fun, upbeat sounds, but they are misleading. And that's why I love them so much ^w^
