xxxPoints; - | Stanzas; 8 | By; Lyrebird | Starring; BacardiSpring! Spring! Spring is in the air
and with it the Earth shakes off her wear and tear
Spring! Spring! Spring has finally come
birds sing, foals whinny, and bees hum
Surrounded by spring's new wonder
Bear Run is plunged happily under
with new foals frolicking about
through fields where wildflowers sprout
one such foal as these
none other than bacardi enjoying the end of freeze
a troublemaker through and through
over the grounds he flew!
kicking up dust, in a hurry
causing his mothers both to worry
hooves over head he goes,
toppling and toppling until, against his mother's legs, he slows
there's a laughing nicker,
and an indignant tail flicker
but the colt is back to his feet
and off across the yard with a bleat
now he prances toward another handsome stallion,
a blue taffy by the name of Sinner, neck laden with medallions
the two were quite taken with each other, twitterpated
and the pair's owners couldn't be more elated
for spring was here! love in the air
and hopefully next spring, there would be more foals to care
especially those from the ranch's newest lovebirds
the two to sire their own herds
so as the days grew hotter,
and the sun became a bother
Bear Run enjoyed so many new foals
and with them, new goals.

xxxPoints; - | Words; 402 | By; Lyrebird | Starring; TexSongbird Acres, as usual, was buzzing with activity. New foals, horses by the trailer load, the distribution of feed and the mucking of stalls were just a few of the things causing a clamor of noise around the large equestrian farm. Among the noise, stood one very stoic-faced mare, eyes half lidded and ears only barely standing upright.
Tex wasn't one to get worked up over everything, especially on such a warm morning, so when the noise suddenly peaked, she didn't so much as flick an ear. The humans got worked up over every little thing, and so many of her stablemates were the same way. So she lazily watched as the two-legged creatures hurried passed her stall and into the courtyard, several of the other horses craning their necks over the stall doors to try and get a look at what had them so excited.
Work halted for a good thirty minutes, and Tex became irritated. Where was her food? Her grooming? She snorted, lifting her head over the stall door and lipping at the latch until it flicked open with a click, and she was able to push the door open. Her hooves clipped and clopped down the cobblestone lane and her pelt twitched as she came through the main door and felt the sun hit her back.
Before her, the humans, a good twenty or thirty of them, were clustered around the familiar body of her owner. But what was that in her hands? Tex stepped closer, nosing between the humans until she could stare down at the creature in her owner's arms. It was tiny and black and furry. A cat? Or more like kitten.
The thing was held up to her and she sniffed it, causing it to mewl at her. She jerked her head back away from the creature, snorting warily.
"It's alright, Tex. This here is Bond! He's the new barn cat, and he'll be sleeping in your stall since it's the biggest one." Bond mewed again, stretching up to rub his cheek against Tex's nose. The mare decided that maybe, just maybe, the cat wasn't all that bad. But she'd never tell the others that. They'd see it as a sign of weakness. So she shook her mane, trying to act uninterested, and turned to go back to her stall. Behind her, the humans began to squeal and coo at the kitten once more.

xxxPoints; - | Stanzas; 7 | By; Lyrebird | Starring; Edgargaits flowed effortlessly between
beats of the heart matching unseen
horse and rider, poetry and poet
flawless dancers, and they know it
music weaves through the air
sand bowing beneath the pair
there's a slight shift of the saddle
the gait changes, bits rattle
all around them awestruck faces
watching, anticipating, the next paces
the poet's wary eyes are glued to the judges
but there isn't once she budges
the beast has no despair
he knows for sure they've got the flair
the win is right within their grasp
the music stops and so do they, the sand gives one final rasp
a bow, then silence, as all await
watching judges and their debate
finally, across the board
all agreed, they'd earned their award
beast and breathless beauty
bathe in the praise rewarded their duty
a high held chest and swishing tail
her horse knew they would not fail
ribbons are pinned and medals worn
pride and praise are too adorned
tonight they'd bring home the win
and tomorrow it would all begin again

xxxPoints; - | Words; 832 | By; Lyrebird | Starring; Étoile / TequilaIt was an early spring morning at the estates, and Tequila was spread way too thin. Following a massive move overseas to France, what had been previously known as Songbird Acres - now just called the Finch Estates by English speakers - had been experiencing a baby boom like no other. This certainly wasn't the problem - at least not the main one - but it still helped to stress him out.
The herd had grown to well over sixty horses, and it was obvious the relative peace Tequila had managed over the last few years would not last long. Some suspected Tex, or Rum, or even Stark to challenge Tequila for head of the herd, but they never made a move. Not like they really followed his lead much as it were anyway.
It was a precarious balancing act, one that finally toppled over and shattered when he arrived.
The morning was pleasantly cool, and Tequila was enjoying a rare moment of peace when the trailer pulled up. He ignored it at first, as he usually did; most likely a scheduled breeding appointment or horse come for training. Only when the rest of the herd began to move up to the gate, murmuring amongst themselves, did he pull himself to his hooves and march over, putting on his official herd leader attitude - chest out, stepping high, head held proudly up.
The herd parted around him respectfully, and he found himself standing next to his second in command, Ambriel.
"What is this?" Tequila demanded, ears flicking backwards as their Human slid the door open and vanished into the trailer.
"New horse." Came Ambriel's reply, and Tequila noticed the other stallion actually seemed interested in something. He hummed, turning his attention back to the trailer.
Human emerged, cooing behind her to whatever was attached to her lead. A hesitant hoof could be heard tapping against the metal, before the horse finally emerged. The herd gave a collective gasp, and Tequila decided immediately he wasn't fond of this newcomer.
Fluff covered every inch of his stocky body - probably some fancy French bloodlines in effect - and golden-hazel eyes swept over the herd, almost appraising them. The stallion was taller than most of the rest of them, especially Tequila, and shot the head stallion a smirk as he lifted his head high and flicked his tail proudly. Somewhere in the herd, a mare swooned.
He was led into the pasture next to theirs, and immediately most of the herd migrated towards him. Even Ambriel, that little traitor. Only Tex remained behind, grazing calmly as if the stallion had never arrived. Not much seemed to bother her, Tequila noticed.
Sighing, Tequila trudged back into the herd, only getting more irritated when he had to physically push through them this time. He came to a forceful stop as his nose crashed into something fluffy and he looked up directly into the eyes of his new favorite horse. He took a sneering step back, trying in vain to lift his head above the other stallion's. "I am Tequila, leader of this he--"
"Ah, I do not remember asking." Came a distinctly French accent, and Tequila stepped back in shock. Interrupting him?!
"Listen here, you big lump of foreign flea-ridden fur." He snarled, teeth bared. "This is my territory, my herd, and I will have you ruin everything I've worked hard for."
"Mmhm. No one is telling you to stay, old man." This elicited a chuckle from the herd and Tequila shot them a wide-eyed glare."Let us, how do you say?- get one thing straight. This? This is my herd now. I had no desire to take them from you, but you have forced my hoof." He seemed to shrug, turning away from Tequila to talk once more to the overly-enthusiastic herd.
And just like that, Tequila was out-cast. He watched the herd from a distance, finally coming to terms with his dethroning.
Rum showed the newcomer - Étoile - how to open the gates with his lips, and he joined them in the main paddock. Eventually, he chased Tequila into the side enclosure, just to humiliate him more. Bacardi taught him how to beg for treats from the humans, even Edgar stepped up, offering to groom with him.
By the end of the week, things had almost gone back to normal. Tequila was allowed back in with the herd, though he mostly stayed with Tex or Etch, and Étoile ran the herd. Most agreed he did an even better job than Tequila, and was much more fun to boot. Tequila was sad, sure, but also very much relieved. He'd led the herd since it was just three of them, and the stress had been getting to him. He was content to let someone else take over, and even more content with the knowledge that it wouldn't last forever. Étoile would eventually come to him for advice, or some new horse would arrive and steal the show.
