3: Where I'm from
4: You're safe now
5: Where I'm from
6: Where I'm from
7: Where I'm from
8: Take you back
Roll says... 5: Where I'm from.
"Where I'm from, we do," you say. "I don't really care what happens here - if I'm around and I can do something, I won't let anyone die just for being considered a pest."
Willpower +1.
He looks at you thoughtfully for a minute, then darts back to your side. You keep moving.
Once or twice, you feel someone looking at you, though you can't see them. No one bothers you on the street, and your companion says nothing more, which gives you time to think over your situation.
You really have no idea what this will mean for either of you. Charlie's orders seemed permanent - you figure you'll be safe as long as you follow the rules. But rescuing this little tom may mean a lot of different things. Maybe he's to you what you are to Charlie now, in that he's under your protection and technically your property. Maybe saving him meant lifting the safety from yourself, or it stuck and now he's just as safe as you are. You don't know for sure.
You're still deep in thought when you finally make it back to Thimble's house. This time, you actively look for her, calling her name once or twice. You jump over the fence and turn around just in time to see the little tom shoot into the air with astonishing height and land gracefully on the ground beside you.
You don't question him just yet. Instead, you show him where the fountain is and wait for Thimble. He gulps down the water so quickly you worry he'll drown himself.
It takes a few minutes, but when she finally comes out of the house through a tiny entrance with a cover, you don't give her a moment to speak.
"I need you to let this cat stay with you," you say.
She blinks. "I'm sorry, what?"
You look over to where the tom was - but he's darted behind a flower pot. "He nearly got killed last night. There isn't anywhere safe for him to go in town, so I figured the best place was with you. You're outside of the action - no one's gunna look for him here."
Thimble's eyes shine. "Is he a criminal?"
"I dunno." You motion with your tail for him to come out. "But he's definitely not welcome there."
Slowly, the tiny black tom moves towards you. He stands a little behind you, watching Thimble carefully.
"This is Thimble," you say calmly. "She's a friend of mine. Thimble, this is...um..."
The tom peeks around your shoulder. "Scat."
"Scat?" You stare at him.
He nods.
"Why are you called Scat?" Thimble says.
He inches up to your right side and takes a breath.
"SCAT, CAT!"
You almost leap backwards in surprise while Thimble half-shrieks with laughter. Scat looks at you as if he hadn't just yelled louder than ten much larger cats.
"S'whattheyallyellatme," he says. "Humans'n'cats, allof'em. ClosesttoanameIgot."
"Well, Scat," Thimble says, while you put your fur back in order. "Are you hungry?"
The yellow eyes shine.
